Gilly Salmon is a Professor of e-learning and Learning Technologies at the University of Leicester/UK. She researches about e-learning scenarios for the future. She is known for her book ‘E-Moderating. The key to teaching and learning online’, where she explores a five stage model to prepare teachers for online moderation and work: 1. Access and motivation, 2. Online socialization, 3. Information exchange, 4. Knowledge construction, 5. Development. Based on this research she is developing a practical and inspiring guide for online teachers. E-moderating in higher education

    No full text
E-Moderators are "the new generation of teachers and trainers who work with learners online" using Computer-Mediated Conferencing (CMC) as a learning tool, regardless of the subject they are teaching. The author, Gilly Salmon, a distance education specialist with the Open University Business School in the UK, provides a five-step model of effective online education, along with copious examples of how the model relates to real-life online learning contexts. Salmon proposes that, by basing learning on a constructivist model, it is e-moderators that can make the difference in online education as they convene, direct, summarize, and archive synchronous and asynchronous discussions

Long-term impact of techniques used to manage sleep disturbance in the under-5s: a rapid systematic review

    No full text
Behavioural insomnia is common in under-fives and modified extinction interventions are the recommended treatment. There is contention regarding whether techniques that promote ignoring a child’s distress causes potential damage to infant mental health and the mother-child bond. A rapid review of the literature was undertaken to explore the association between use of behavioural interventions and infant mental health, and/or maternal mental health and/or parent-child attachment. Three themes were identified from the literature; (1) the impact of behavioural interventions on infant and maternal mental health, (2) behavioural interventions and maternal mood and/or stress, (3)J parental perceptions of behavioural interventions on their child and themselves. The key recommendations and implications for practice are explored and clarified
