Review of Ravi Batra, The Great Depression of 1990

Review of Ravi Batra, The Great Depression of 1990 The Great Depression of 1990 was on the New York Times best-seller list for non-fiction in the summer of 1987. It follows a standard formula for best sellers in forecasting: Forecast a great disaster, and include a formula for redemption. If the disaster occurs, you can say, "I told you so. " If it doesn't occur, you say, "It is good that they listened to my advice. I saved them. " How can you lose? When I first saw this book, it occurred to me that it was a hoax

J-Circos : an interactive Circos plotter

    No full text
Circos plots are graphical outputs that display three\ud dimensional chromosomal interactions and fusion transcripts. However, the Circos plot tool is not an interactive visualization tool, but rather a figure generator. For example, it does not enable data to be added dynamically, nor does it provide information for specific data points interactively. Recently, an R-based Circos tool (RCircos) has been developed to integrate Circos to R, but similarly, Rcircos can only be used to generate plots. Thus, we have developed a Circos plot tool (J-Circos) that is an interactive visualization tool that can plot Circos figures, as well as being able to dynamically add data to\ud the figure, and providing information for specific data points using mouse hover display and zoom in/out functions. J-Circos uses the Java computer language to enable it to be used on most operating systems (Windows, MacOS, Linux). Users can input data into JCircos using flat data formats, as well as from the GUI. J-Circos will enable biologists to better study more complex chromosomal interactions and fusion transcripts that are otherwise difficult to visualize\ud from next-generation sequencing data

Colin Dodds (Vice President, Academic and Research 1991-2000, SMU President 2000-2015) at her induction into the President's Hall of Academic Excellence, which was established as a permanent feature just outside the President's Office in May 2002 to commemorate Saint Mary's University's Bicentennial. They are standing in front of a table piled with other framed certificates. From External Affairs. Photo was in a Kodak envelope with 'President's wall [sic] of excellence' and 'May 2004' written on it in blue pen. The Kodak envelope was inside a larger envelope with 'ALUMNI' written on it in blue pen

Cross-national differences in stakeholder management: Applying institutional theory and comparative capitalism framework

    No full text
Drawing upon the research in institutional theory and comparative capitalism, the present study investigates how cross-national differences in the political, business, and economic institutional contexts of the United States, Italy, and Japan are associated with the ways in which companies in each of these countries prioritize and engage in their stakeholder engagement activities (SEAs). Using Porter and Kramer's framework, which classifies corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities as falling into four categories (good citizenship, mitigating harm from value chain, transforming value chain activities, and strategic philanthropy), we investigate how companies in the United States, Japan, and Italy prioritize and engage in these four SEAs. An analysis of data collected from 340 companies across these countries reveals that while companies in each of these three countries undertake the four types of SEAs, the prioritization and prevalence of the four types of SEAs vary from one country to the other, in ways that align with the prevailing institutional contexts of each country. The results contribute to a more nuanced understanding of why and how companies' approaches to CSR differ across countries. From a practitioner's perspective, the findings highlight the cultural specificity of CSR, implying that despite the global nature of CSR, the implementation of CSR needs to be tailored to a country's context

Food safety news events classification via a hierarchical transformer model

    No full text
In light of the significance of regulatory authorities and the rising demand for information disclosure, a vast amount of information on food safety news reports is readily accessible on the Internet. The extraction of such information for precise classification and provision of appropriate safety alerts based on their respective categories has emerged as a challenging problem for academic research. Given that most food safety-related events in news reports comprise lengthy text, the pre-trained language models currently employed for text analysis are generally limited in their capability to handle long documents. This paper proposes a long-text classification model utilising hierarchical Transformers. We categorise information in long documents into two distinct types: (1) multiple text chunks meeting the length constraint and (2) essential sentences within long documents, such as headings, paragraph start and end sentences, etc. Initially, our proposed model utilises the text chunks as input to the BERT model. Then, it concatenates the output of the BERT model with the important sentences from the document and use them as input to the Transformer model for feature transformation. Finally, we utilise a classifier for food safety news classification. We conducted several comparative experiments with various commonly used text classification models on a dataset constructed from publicly available information on food regulatory websites. Our proposed method outperforms existing methods, establishing itself as the leading approach in terms of performance. [Abstract copyright: © 2023 The Author(s).

Effect of cord factor, a toxic glycolipid from mycobacterium tuberculosis, on mouse liver drug metabolizing enzymes

    No full text
Cord factor (a mycobacterial toxin) treatment of mice for 72 hr resulted in decreased activities of hepatic drug metabolizing enzymes. The toxin treated animals exhibited reduced levels of liver cytochrome P-450 and cytochrome b5, accompanied by significant lowering of NADPH-cytochrome c reductase and NADH-cytochrome b5 reductase activities. The hepatic activities of aminopyrine N-demethylase and aniline hydroxylase were diminished, while liver cytosolic glutathione S-transferase activity was inhibited in mice receiving the toxin. Earlier studies from this laboratory (J. K. Batra, Ph.D. Thesis, Delhi University, India, 1982) on the effects of experimental tuberculosis on hepatic drug metabolism revealed changes similar to the presently reported influence of cord factor on mouse liver microsomal monooxygenases. Thus, the action of cord factor (on hepatic drug metabolism) largely mimics the effects of tuberculosis infection
