Ernst J. Schlochauer Collection 1925-1961 Bulk dates: 1941-1961
The Ernst J. Schlochauer collection mostly contains the personal and professional papers of Prof. Schlochauer. The bulk of the collection focuses on his professional work. The collection also contains documents pertaining to his in-law Ernst Warschauer and his extended family.Series I is composed of personal documents of Ernst Schlochauer, including obituaries, clippings about Schlochauer’s lectures, photographs, school certificates and diplomas, and other personal papers. This collection also contains the manuscript Tragedy of Hoffman signed by the editor Harold Jenkins specifically to Schlochauer.Series II is made up of Schlochauer’s writings, including journal articles, academic reprints, his dissertation, an article about the project he was working on right before he died, and other writings pertaining to Elizabethan drama. A handwritten manuscript, entitled Between Today and Tomorrow, by Schlochauer, is also included; the manuscript pertains to experiences as a Jewish refugee in England.Series III pertains to the Warschauer and Casper families. It is mostly made up of photographs of members of the Warschauer, Casper, and Schlochauer families. There are also sketches by Walter Casper included in this collection and an English translation by Ernst Warschauer of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach’s Elixir of Wisdom: Aphorisms and letters about its publication.Ernst Schlochauer Collection, LBI-NY, AR-5785.Ernst J. Schlochauer was born on April 3, 1921 in Berlin, Germany. At age 16, he was sent to school in England and in 1939 he and his family immigrated to England. After surviving the London Blitz, he moved to the United States. In 1944, he received his bachelor’s degree from Queens College in Flushing, NY and a doctorate from Princeton in 1948 in literature. Schlochauer specialized in Elizabethan drama, writing on the works of William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Henry Chettle. In 1951, Schlochauer became an instructor at Queens College and was promoted to assistant professor in 1955. In 1957, he married his wife, Ursula Smith nee Kantorowicz (daughter of Claire Warschauer). In 1960, he received a fellowship to the Folger Shakespeare Library. Schlochauer passed away from a heart ailment on March 1, 1961.Processeddigitize
