    Predicting the Position of the Hydrogen Atom in the Short Intramolecular Hydrogen Bond of the Hydrogen Maleate Anion from Geometric Correlations

    The position of the hydrogen atom inside the strong and short intramolecular hydrogen bond of the hydrogen maleate anion strongly varies depending on the crystalline environment. Therefore, it has not been possible in the past to accurately determine it using X-ray diffraction data although there are 292 hydrogen maleate crystal structures with different cations in the literature. In this study, a geometric correlation for the accurate prediction of the hydrogen position in the short intramolecular hydrogen bond is presented. The results used to derive the correlation are obtained from low-temperature neutron-diffraction studies on nine different hydrogen maleate salts that span the whole range from perfectly symmetric to highly asymmetric intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Since the only variable in the correlation as derived from the neutron data is the O···O distance, the hydrogen atom position in question can subsequently be predicted using information that is accurately available from routine X-ray data. The procedure is tested using high-resolution low-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction structures of the same compounds, before it is applied to X-ray data sets found in the literature in which the hydrogen atom position was not determined accurately or not determined at all, e.g., using a riding model

    Ontology, quantification, and fundamentality

    The structuralist conception of metaphysics holds that it aims to uncover the ultimate structure of reality and explain how the world's richness and variety are accounted for by that ultimate structure. On this conception, metaphysicians produce fundamental theories, the primitive, undefined expressions of which are supposed to 'carve reality at its joints', as it were. On this conception, ontological questions are understood as questions about what there is, where the existential quantifier 'there is' has a fundamental, joint-carving interpretation. Structuralist orthodoxy holds that there is exactly one fundamental, joint-carving interpretation that an existential quantifier could have (cf. Sider 2008: §10). This orthodox assumption could go wrong--either by there being too few fundamental-quantifier interpretations, or by there being too many. In this dissertation I examine the implications of these non-orthodox options. Someone who thinks there are too many fundamental-quantifier interpretations might think this means standard ontological debates are in some sense defective of 'merely verbal', or she might think instead that the different quantifiers show that there are different 'ways' or 'modes' of being. I argue that the first option runs into problems with a certain sort of realism about logic, but that there is no general problem with the second option, despite its longstanding bad philosophical reputation. I also argue that realism about logic gives us reason to think the dispute between someone who thinks there are many 'modes of being' in this sense and someone who thinks there is just one is not itself verbal. Finally, I turn to the case in which there are no fundamental quantifiers, arguing that it brings with it a host of theoretical problems we could avoid with quantifiers.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 224-233)

    Progress towards intersubband quantum-box lasers for highly efficient continuous wave operation in the mid-infrared

    Intersubband Quantum-Box (IQB) lasers; that is, devices consisting of 2-D arrays of ministacks (i.e., 2-4 stages) intersubband QB emitters are proposed, as an alternative to 30-stage quantum-cascade (QC) devices, as sources for efficient room-temperature (RT) emission in the mid-infrared (4-6 µm) wavelength range. Preliminary results include: 1) the design of devices for operation with 50% wallplug efficiency at RT; 2) realization of a novel type of QC device: the deep-well (DW) QC laser, that has demonstrated at lambda =4.7µm low temperature sensitivity of the threshold current, a clear indication of suppressed carrier leakage; 3) the formation of 2-D arrays at nanopoles by employing nanopatterning and dry etching; 4) the formation of 40nm-diameter, one-stage IQB structures on 100nm centers by preferential regrowth via metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE).Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (agreement number FA8650-07-1-7709

    Batesian mimics influence mimicry ring evolution

    Mathematical models of mimicry typically involve artificial prey species with fixed colorations or appearances; this enables a comparison of predation rates to demonstrate the level of protection a mimic might be afforded. Fruitful theoretical results have been produced using this method, but it is also useful to examine the possible evolutionary consequences of mimicry. To that end, we present individual-based evolutionary simulation models where prey colorations are free to evolve. We use the models to examine the effect of Batesian mimics on Mullerian mimics and mimicry rings. Results show that Batesian mimics can potentially incite Mullerian mimicry relationships and encourage mimicry ring convergence
