Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Campbell, a young man employed as a stenographer and typist in Montgomery, AlabamaScope and Content Note: Written between January 1 and May 19, 1895, the daily entries in this diary detail J. O. Campbell's activities as a stenographer and typist for what appears to be a bank or broker's office in Montgomery, Alabama. One entry, Saturday, March 16, describes asking Governor Thomas G. Jones if he (Campbell) could "read law in his office." He offers his services as a part-time stenographer and typist, and explains that he doesn't want to practice law "but wanted to know something about it," that his "ultimate goal" was to go to Harvard. In a late February entry, he vividly describes saving a two-month-old puppy from a forty-four foot open well, injuring his foot in the process. There are blue tinted prints of Montgomery streets and buildings pasted in the diary, as well as a hand drawn floorplan of the sixth floor of the Moses Building where he worked.Biographical/Historical Note: J.
