    ERNA and Friedman's reverse mathematics

Elementary Recursive Nonstandard Analysis, in short ERNA, is a constructive system of nonstandard analysis with a PRA consistency proof, proposed around 1995 by Patrick Suppes and Richard Sommer. Recently, the author showed the consistency of ERNA with several transfer principles and proved results of nonstandard analysis in the resulting theories (see [12] and [13]). Here, we show that Weak Konig's lemma (WKL) and many of its equivalent formulations over RCA(0) from Reverse Mathematics (see [21] and [22]) can be 'pushed down' into the weak theory ERNA. while preserving the equivalences, but at the price of replacing equality with equality 'up to infinitesimals'. It turns out that ERNA plays the role of RCA(0) and that transfer for universal formulas corresponds to WKL

While Other Children Played: A Hidden Child Remembers the Holocaust

Trapped in Poland at the outbreak of the war, Erna Blitzer Gorman and her family were moved from one ghetto to another. When a Ukrainian farmer agreed to hide the small family in his hayloft, no one dreamed that they would be there for almost two years. When the Russians liberated the area, the family was forced to leave their hiding place and join the advancing army. After the tragic death of Erna's mother, the girls and their father struggled for survival and to get home to France. Erna never spoke of her experiences to anyone for almost forty years until she heard a stranger's words of hate on the television. Faced with long-repressed memories, Erna had to learn how to cope with her past.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/83451/1/ErnaBookFinal.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/83451/2/ErnaCoverFINAL.pd

“Recoil separator ERNA: Ion Beam specifications”

    No full text
For improved measurements of the key astrophysical reaction C-12(alpha, gamma)O-16 in inverted kinematics, a recoil separator ERNA is being developed at the 4 MV Dynamitron tandem accelerator in Bochum to detect directly the O-16 recoils with about 50% efficiency. Calculations of the ion beam optics including all filtering and focusing elements of ERNA are presented. Since the C-12 projectiles and the O-16 recoils have essentially the same momentum, and since the C-12 ion beam emerging from the accelerator passes through a momentum filter (analysing magnet), the C-12 ion beam must be as free as possible from O-16 contamination for ERNA to succeed. In the present work, the O-16 contamination was reduced from a level of 1 x 10(-11) to a level below 2 x 10(-29) by the installation of Wien filters both before and after the analysing magnet. The measurement of these and other beam specifications involved other parts of the final ERNA layout - sequentially a Wien filter, a 60 degrees dipole magnet, another Wien filter, and a Delta E-E telescope. The setup led to a measured suppression factor of 5 x 10(-18) for the C-12 ion beam. The experiments also indicate that an almost free choice of the charge state for the O-16 recoils is possible in the separator

Dietary intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in children - a workshop report.

There is controversy whether children should have a dietary supply of preformed long-chain polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. The aims of the workshop were to review evidence for a possible benefit of a preformed EPA and/or DHA supply, of data required to set desirable intakes for children aged 2-12 years, and of research priorities. The authors concluded that EPA and DHA intakes per kg body weight may often be low in 2- to 12-year-old children, relative to intakes per kg body weight of breast-fed infants and adult intakes, but reliable data are scarce. Little information is available that increasing dietary intakes of EPA or DHA in children has benefits to physical or mental function or other health endpoints. Studies addressing EPA and DHA intakes and tissue status among groups of children with different dietary habits, and measures of relevant development and health endpoints, are needed for developing potential advice on desirable intakes of EPA and/or DHA in children. At this time it appears prudent to advise that dietary intakes in childhood are consistent with future eating patterns supporting adult health, such as prevention of metabolic disorders and CVD, supporting immune function, and reproductive health. In conclusion, the available information relating dietary EPA and DHA intakes in children aged 2-12 years to growth, development and health is insufficient to derive dietary intake recommendations for EPA and DHA. Adequately designed studies addressing dietary intakes, measures of status and relevant functional or health effects across this age group are needed
