Fishing gear for prawn and shrimp used in the Philippines today
The report describes the different gears used for collecting penaeids which have been traditionally used in the Philippines. Twenty gears are presently found throughout the Philippines: nine for collecting sugpo fry and 13 for capturing adult prawns. Thirty-six figures are included in this report. The illustrations were done by Mr. Panfilo Legazpi, Jr., a scientific illustrator at SIA, based on colored photographs and actual observations.
Also in: Compilation of JICA Expert Activities at SEAFDEC, Aquaculture Department (1974-1985) by S. Fukumoto, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) 1989, pp 63-75.This paper describes various types of shrimping and prawning gear and devices, most of which have been traditionally used in the Philippines, with some ecological notes. This study provides basic information on prawn culture and fry collection, which will be useful for private fishpond operators and workers

Traditional devices for capturing crabs used in the Philippines today
Contribution No. 45 of the Aquaculture Department, SEAFDEC.The author intends to illustrate and describe the indigenous devices traditionally used to capture crabs including the constructions and the operational manners. Also the present writing is hoped to play a role in disseminating the record of the unique devices among local Philippine people and continued use of them. It may be added that the biological significance related to these devices may worth to be recorded
Kultivacija notranje narave (xing) v Leibnizovih kitajskih spisih
The concept of inner nature (xing), a crucial part of the ideal of self-cultivation in Chinese thought, played an important role in philosophical communication between China and europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. The author differentiates between two types of attributes of the concept of nature, according to the successfulness of communication: those that adequately reached their european addressees and those that evaded the translatability of concepts. She also identifies the conceptual reasons for this selective translatability. In the process of the translation of Chinese concepts into the european framework the qualifier “rational” was added to the term “nature” (xing) by late 17th century translators. It was precisely the concept of self-cultivation, based on the inner nature (xing), translated as rational nature (natura rationalis), that provided a point of reference for the enlightenment praise of the Chinese natural morality. The morals of the Chinese were identified as proof of the sufficiency of the natural religion – and the redundancy of the religion of revelation. In the study of this problem the author thus focuses primarily on the comments on the “natural theology of the Chinese” in Leibniz’s Chinese writings, and by comparison with his other contemporary writings, analyses the hypothetical dialogicality of this concept. Based on this study the author finally shows the core foundation of the relevancy of the concept of (self)cultivation for 18th century European philosophy, Leibniz’s understanding of the Chinese concept of one’s inner nature (xing) as a condition for the possibility of epistemological and practical autonomy. V procesu prevajanja kitajskih konceptov v evropski okvir so prevajalci konca sedemnajstega stoletja naravi (xing) pridali še prilastek »razumna«. Prav koncept samokultivacije na temelju notranje narave (xing), prevedene v razumno naravo (natura rationalis), je nato predstavljal oporno točko razsvetljenskega poveličevanja kitajske naravne morale, v kateri so pisci prepoznavali dokaz zadostnosti naravne religije – in odvečnost religije razodetja.
A further note to “fishing gear for prawn and shrimp used in the Philippines today”
Contribution No. 46 of the Aquaculture Department, SEAFDEC.Motoh (1980) reported 9 and 13 kinds of shrimping gear for the fry and the adult respectively, of which most of them are indigenously used today in the Philippines. Howerver, druing the continued ecological survey of penaeids in the country conducted by him and his staff, six kinds of shrimping gear or devices were additionally found by them, which have been used traditionally in the country.
The reasons that the present author intends to introduce the gear or devices are as follwos: 1) To record theses unque devices from the nature conservation point of view, which were invented by local people through their long experiences, though devices been forgotten due to their poor catching effectiveness, and 2) To recommend the continuous use of these devices by local people, which impose much less construction technique and energy on the users compared to modern mechanized catching tools
Irreversible Investment, Operating Flexibility, and Time Lags
We consider an optimal investment problem when a firm such as an electric power company has the operational flexibility to expand and contract capacity with fixed cost. This problem is formulated as an impulse control problem combined with optimal stopping. Consequently, we obtain optimal investment timing, optimal capacity expansion and contraction timing, and the investment value. We also show investment, capacity expansion and contraction rule are influenced by the price volatility and the initial capacity is also influenced by the ratio between base-load plant and peak-load plant. In addition, we investigate how time lag between investment and operation influences the investment rule
