Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The associations between personality traits, leisure activities, and memory performance in older adulthood /
The present study examines the links between personality traits, leisure activities, and memory in older adults after controlling for leisure activities and demographic factors. The research sample consisted of 24,930 individuals aged 65 to 101 years from 27 European countries (43.2% men and 56.8% women). Data from the 7th Wave of the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe was analyzed. Memory was assessed using a modified version of Rey’s Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT). Personality traits were assessed using the BFI-10 Personality Traits Questionnaire. Data analysis revealed that personality traits such as openness to experience and neuroticism allow for the prediction of memory capacity in older adulthood. These relationships remained significant even after controlling for cognitively stimulating leisure activities and age. These results show that personality traits such as neuroticism and openness to experience might be valuable in predicting memory functioning among older adults
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Cancer survivors’ experiences of return to work: difficulties and facilitating factors to return
Tyrimo tikslas. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Grįžimas į darbą; Lengvinantys veiksniai; Onkologinė liga; Sunkumai; Cancer; Difficulties; Facilitating factors; Return to workThe aim of the research. The aim of this study is to reveal the subjective difficulties experienced by those returning to work after cancer and the factors facilitating their return to work. Methods. A qualitative study based on the principles of thematic analysis is presented. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview method. The study included 16 individuals who returned to work after fully completed cancer treatment The study sample consisted of 2 males and 14 females (aged 26 to 69 years) from different cities of Lithuania working in both private and public sectors. Results and conclusions. The analysis of the participants‘ experience revealed that return to work after cancer is complicated by the side effects of the illness and its treatment, psychological difficulties, various ethical and social aspects related to workplace confidentiality violation, cancer stigma and misunderstanding from others. Therefore, the need to educate public on cancer related issues and increase the accessibility of social and psychological services for cancer patients is emphasized. Return to work and reintegration are facilitated by employees’ motivation to work, support from others, and flexible working conditions
Cancer survivors’ experiences of return to work: cancer stigma, social insecurities and other aspects
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Darbuotojai; Diskriminacija; Grįžimas į darbą; Onkologinė liga; Socialinis nesaugumas; Stigma; Cancer; Discrimination; Employees; Return to work; Social insecurity; StigmaCancer requires difficult long-term treatment. After its’ completement return to work may become challenging. The side effects of the disease and its’ treatment, psychological difficulties, various psychosocial factors in the working environment complicate this process. In recent years, there has been a growing evidence that cancer patients face cancer stigma and unequal opportunities at workplace. The aim of the research. The aim of this study is to reveal cancer survivors’ experiences related to social and ethical aspects after their return to work. Methods. 16 individuals working in Lithuania took part in this study. They were employees who have returned to work after fully completed cancer treatment. The study sample consisted of 2 males and 14 females aged 26 to 69 years. A qualitative study was conducted using a semistructured interview, which consisted of three question topics related to the experience of taking a sick leave due to cancer, returning to work and questions about the organization in which study participant worked. Interview also consisted of introductory and situational questions. The analysis of data was based on the principles of thematic analysis. Results and conclusions. The analysis of the research participants’ experiences revealed that the confidentiality for cancer survivors who returned to work is not always guaranteed in Lithuanian workplaces. Their right to privacy is also often violated. Employees who have returned to work after cancer face stigma and are misunderstood by others. Working conditions are not always appropriate and adjusted to returnees’ needs. Inequality of career opportunities are also present in some cases. Cancer survivors who returned to work often feel socially and financially insecure. Due to the stigma, unequal opportunities at the workplace and misunderstanding from others, employees may face additional difficulties in the return to work process. The education on cancer related issues and development of appropriate communication culture in Lithuanian workplaces is needed
