Gaze distribution in the visual field (gaze deviation from TP, TP is at the origin).

Top. The pattern in the “normal” condition in Experiment 2 is very similar to the previously published result in Experiment 1 (Lappi, Pekkanen & Itkonen, 2013b). Gaze is widely distributed in an area, with the modal gaze position of each individual (small circles) displaced about 5° from TP. Upper panel: marginal distribution of horizontal gaze position. Bottom. Level curves enclose 25%, 50% and 75% of the gaze position measurements. Bottom: “tp” condition in Experiment 2. Gaze is much more concentrated, with modal gaze position well within 5° of TP.</p
Tutkimusretki : Purjehdus Savonian innovaatiokulttuurin siniselle merelle
In conclusion, a concept of innovation culture and all its levels were formed. The most significant finding in the study was the innovation spirit; a positive attitude, self-sustaining force of change towards a more innovative organizational culture.
The purpose of the thesis work was to find solutions for developing a student-centered innovation culture in Savonia University of Applied Sciences. To understand the complex nature of innovation culture, the world of systems theory and innovation were explored. A research on social network anatomy and social transformation was done to seek the opportunities of combining them with design thinking.
The role of design thinking was to act as the voice of reason and creativity, to simplify the process and visualize the results in to an easily understandable format.
The study explored innovation culture with bottom-up approach in the educational organization; how the innovation skills of a student are seen as a part of the innovation system, followed by an analysis of team dynamics and an analysis of inter-related relationships within three case studies of student teams or groups
Quality assurance of property maintenance by external audit : a study on the need for external audits in ensuring the quality of property maintenance
Professional building maintenance is key part of property life cycle management and value preservation. High-quality maintenance supports the profitability of the investment, and therefore it is essential to ensure that service is carried out in accordance with agreed quality requirements and contractual terms. This creates an opportunity for an expert firms in the real estate and construction sector to provide added value to their clients by offering a service focused on quality assurance during the property maintenance phase and the assessment of contractual compliance for maintenance tasks. This also provides an impartial perspective and transparency to the implementation of maintenance.
The objective of this thesis was to determine whether there is a need for such a third-party auditing service in the real estate sector and how industry operators view its utilization. The study was conducted as a qualitative research interview, in which professionals working in the maintenance field were interviewed. The interviews were used to survey views on the current state of maintenance quality assurance, development needs, and the necessity of external auditing.
In conclusion, quality assurance is seen as an important part of property maintenance management, but its implementation is often fragmented and organization-specific. About half of the interviewees considered a third-party auditing service to be a necessary and useful tool for ensuring quality and contractual compliance. An independent auditing service could significantly support quality assurance in the real estate sector if it were part of regular maintenance monitoring and development

Task-Difficulty Homeostasis in Car Following Models : Experimental Validation Using Self-Paced Visual Occlusion
Car following (CF) models used in traffic engineering are often criticized for not incorporating “human factors” well known to affect driving. Some recent work has addressed this by augmenting the CF models with the Task-Capability Interface (TCI) model, by dynamically changing driving parameters as function of driver capability. We examined assumptions of these models experimentally using a self-paced visual occlusion paradigm in a simulated car following task. The results show strong, approximately one-to-one, correspondence between occlusion duration and increase in time headway. The correspondence was found between subjects and within subjects, on aggregate and individual sample level. The long time scale aggregate results support TCI-CF models that assume a linear increase in time headway in response to increased distraction. The short time scale individual sample level results suggest that drivers also adapt their visual sampling in response to transient changes in time headway, a mechanism which isn’t incorporated in the current models.Peer reviewe
Characterisation of Motorway Driving Style Using Naturalistic Driving Data
The study of measurable differences between drivers has ramifications for several subfields in traffic and transportation research. Better understanding of the variability in individual driving styles would be especially useful for understanding driver preferences, psychological mechanisms for vehicle control and for developing more realistic traffic simulations. In our study based on a large naturalistic data set, we investigated the driving style of 76 individuals driving in a motorway setting. We discovered that the majority of between-driver variation in keeping longitudinal and lateral safety margins, lane changing frequency, acceleration and speed preference, can be reduced to two dimensions, which we interpret as habitualised motives centred around mental effort and expediency
Driver Gaze Behavior Is Different in Normal Curve Driving and when Looking at the Tangent Point
Several steering models in the visual science literature attempt to capture the visual strategies in curve driving. Some of them are based on steering points on the future path (FP), others on tangent points (TP). It is, however, challenging to differentiate between the models’ predictions in real–world contexts. Analysis of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) parameters is one useful measure, as the different strategies predict measurably different OKN patterns. Here, we directly test this prediction by asking drivers to either a) “drive as they normally would” or b) to “look at the TP”. The design of the experiment is similar to a previous study by Kandil et al., but uses more sophisticated methods of eye–movement analysis. We find that the eye-movement patterns in the “normal” condition are indeed markedly different from the “tp” condition, and consistent with drivers looking at waypoints on the future path. This is the case for both overall fixation distribution, as well as the more informative fixation–by–fixation analysis of OKN. We find that the horizontal gaze speed during OKN corresponds well to the quantitative prediction of the future path models. The results also definitively rule out the alternative explanation that the OKN is produced by an involuntary reflex even while the driver is “trying” to look at the TP. The results are discussed in terms of the sequential organization of curve driving.Peer reviewe
