EXERCISE TRAINING-MEDIATED ANGIOGENESIS AND RECRUITMENT OF BONE MARROW-DERIVED PROGENITOR AND STEM CELLS TO THE CARDIAC TISSUE

    No full text
The mechanisms and the pathways whereby exercise training increases heart vascularization will be reviewed; neo-angiogenesis involves the formation of new capillaries, which typically occurs with the mechanism of intussusception. In addition, physical exercise favors neo-vasculogenesis, by inducing the mobilization of bone marrow-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) which contribute to the repair and regeneration of injured endothelia. New data will be presented suggesting that also bone marrow-derived mesenchymal adult stem cells (MASCs) may be recruited to the cardiac tissue by exercise training. The therapeutic potential of these cell populations will be addressed

Yritä edes! : Yrittäjyys yrittäjän näkökulmasta

    No full text
The purpose of this thesis is to examine entrepreneurial values and attitudes, academic entrepreneurship, start-up entrepreneurship and forced entrepreneurship. In this study entrepreneurial motives and incentives are investigated through national studies and statistics and the received data is related to the author´s personal entrepreneurial experiences. The autoethnographic method has been used in this research to reflect authentically the author’s 20 years experience of entrepreneurship. And the choice of autoethnographic metod gives readers a new perspective in the entrepreneurial studies where qualitative research methods are generally used. National studies show clearly that starting your own business is a risky choice compared to secure employee status even though there is fairly little bureaucracy related to everyday business. It is not the possible wealth, but rather the possibility of chasing ones own dreams and the sense of freedom that are attracting younger generations to entrepreneurship. The aim of this study is to find out why Finland has so few needed start-up businesses. Is our society to blame for its values and attitudes or are Finns just less motivated in commercial activities than more entrepreneurial-minded Greeks? The outcome of this thesis points out that societies need start-up entrepreneurs and academic entrepreneurs to increase the economy. Young people are more open- minded towards entrepreneurship and their entrepreneurial minded attitudes should be met with adequate study programs in our educational system in order to create energetic start-up businesses The study concludes that entrepreneurship is an important part of the driving force in our economy. In the future our societies will face challenges in creating a positive entrepreneurial climate. Entrepreneurial minded persons are seriously needed in saving our economies in crises. Changes in attitudes and values take generations, but change is always a possibility. Catalyst for changing office parks: Housing as an impulse

The Tesselschade 4 (T4) building in Leeuwarden is a 80 meter tall former tax office building from 1970. The modernistic ‘slab’ is raised from the ground level by the characteristic pilotis. Situated in an office park on the edge of the historical city centre the building offers the opportunity to influence its surroundings positively via conversion to mainly housing. The municipality of Leeuwarden has the opportunity use the Tesselschade 4 building as a showcase when it comes to bottom-up transformation of monofunctional office parks. Roughly 80 future residents will have the option to realise their preferred housing type in one of the seven upper floors. A second façade, hanging from an added roof structure serves as a thermal and acoustic buffer for the housing units, which can be reached via galleries and corridors in the north façade and the centre of the building. Additional functions such as a playground, coffee-bar, several work-areas and a roof garden can be found throughout the building. The users are the drivers behind not only the use, but also the development of the project. Second LifeArchitecture, Urbanism and Building Science

Late-stage alterations in myofibrillar contractile function in a transgenic mouse model of dilated cardiomyopathy (Tg alpha q*44)

Mechanical and biochemical alterations were investigated in permeabilized cardiomyocytes along with the progression of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in a transgenic mouse line overexpressing the activated G alpha q protein (Tg alpha q*44). The isometric force, its Ca2+ sensitivity (pCa(50)) and the turnover rate of the actin-myosin cycle (k(tu)) were determined at sarcomere lengths (SLs) of 1.9 mu m and 2.3 mu m before (at 4 and 10 months of age) and after hemodynamic decompensation (at 14 and 18 months of age) in Tg alpha q*44 cardiomyocytes and in age-matched control cardiomyocytes. The SL-dependence of pCa(50) was not different in Tg alpha q*44 and control hearts. In contrast, a significant increase in pCa(50) was observed in the Tg alpha q*44 cardiomyocytes (Delta pCa(50): 0.10-0.15 vs. the controls) after 10 months of age that could be diminished by exposures to the catalytic subunit of protein kinase A (PKA). Accordingly, a decline in endogenous PKA activity and decreased troponin I phosphorylation were detected after 10 months in the Tg alpha q*44 hearts. Finally, the maximal Ca2+-activated force (F-o) and k(tr) were lower and the passive force (F-passive) was higher at 18 months in the Tg alpha q*44 cardiomyocytes compared to the control. These mechanical alterations were paralleled by a robust increase in beta-myosin heavy chain expression in the Tg alpha q*44 hearts. In conclusion, our data suggested that an initial decrease of PKA signaling and subsequent changes in myofilament protein expression may contribute to the development of dilated cardiomyopathy in Tg alpha q*44 hearts.
