On being "dark" and promiscuous: The Dark Triad traits, mate value, disgust, and sociosexuality
No full textThere is considerable evidence suggesting the Dark Triad traits (i.e., psychopathy, narcissism, & Machiavellianism) are associated with greater promiscuity, but the mechanisms liking them are poorly understood. In this study (N = 379) we replicated prior associations between the Dark Triad traits and sociosexuality and considered the potential mechanisms of mate value and (limited) sexual disgust in meditation and moderated-mediation models. The Dark Triad traits were correlated with short-term mating, but only narcissism was associated with more mate value and only psychopathy was associated with limited sexual disgust. Mate value moderated the relationship between psychopathy, sexual disgust, and short-term mating. Sexual disgust acted as a mediator between psychopathy and short-term mating. As such, people high in psychopathy who have high mate value are more promiscuous because they are less disgusted

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Individuals High on the Dark Triad Traits are More Jealous if they are Also High on Mate Value and Restricted in Sociosexuality
No full textThe motivation to mate is a universal motive for all sexually dimorphic species, of which humans belong, that facilitates reproductive success. Jealousy is a universal emotion that is adaptive in the context of mate retention. We tested the relationship between the Dark Triad traits and jealousy as well as the moderating effect of mate value (study 1; N = 441) and mating orientation (study 2; N = 298) on the association between the Dark Triad traits and jealousy. We found that perceived mate value moderated the relationship between the Dark Triad traits and jealousy. As such, people high on the Dark Triad traits were more jealous if they had high mate value. Further, mating orientation moderated the relationship between psychopathy and romantic jealousy. Individuals high on psychopathy that were oriented to long-term mating were more jealous compared to individuals high on psychopathy but oriented to short-term mating
Noise and air pollution from urban traffic
No full textTogether with the atmospheric emission of pollutants, noise can affect the health of the population. In particular, urban traffic is important when considering population health, because of its proximity to the receptors. In comparison with other pollutants, the control of environmental noise has been hampered by insufficient knowledge of its effects on people and of dose-response relationships, as well as by a lack of defined criteria. Due to the high levels of external noise and interior noise, the difficulties are in communication and a series of nonspecific symptoms: irritability, headache, palpitations, sleep disorders, stress. Concerning air pollution, the health of the population is directly influenced by primary emissions or atmospheric transformation from motor vehicles. Few studies have characterized the spatial correlation between both factors, air pollutants and noise, thus this paper, based on urban noise measurements, presents preliminary data on noise levels in a European capital and a discussion where interactions with air quality are dealt with. Data demonstrates that the urban structure of the analysed city cannot guarantee an adequate protection of the population against noise, because of the interactions between neighbouring areas
