At a time when the individual identity serves as a basis to comprehend the relations between
individuals in a society, it can be taken into account that the individual‟s formation process
springs up as a response derived from internal and external experiences. Through a theoretical
approach to Wolfgang Welsch‟s transcultural model, it is our purpose to verify how this
contact takes place. In order to illustrate these relations, the literary project of the Syrian author

Spouses, lovers, and other strangers : men, women, and relationships in the works of Rafik Schami
Syrian-German author Rafik Schami has a literary career spanning approximately thirty years. Although his native Syria often forms the backdrop for his stories, Schami’s intended audience is clearly German-speaking because he composes his works in German. As most of the discourse on minority literature in Germany focuses on Turkish-German literature, an examination of Schami’s texts would offer another perspective on this phenomenon. This dissertation project focuses on several novels from Rafik Schami, including Reise zwischen Nacht und Morgen, Die dunkle Seite der Liebe, Die Sehnsucht der Schwalbe, and Das Geheimnis des Kalligraphen, all of which thematize various types of interpersonal relationships, including familial and romantic. With few exceptions, men and women inhabit different worlds, and this complicates their ability to maintain a connection to one another. The world of women is frequently depicted as exotic or secretive, whereas the world of men is one of brutality. This separation of men and women is imposed by political and cultural means. In his characterization of the relationships between men and women, the author draws attention to their respective situations and criticizes the forces that draw them apart. Most of the scholarship on Rafik Schami’s texts has focused upon intercultural communication, migration, and exoticism. Very little attention has been paid to issues of gender, although relationships and differences between men and women inhabit a significant portion of his novels. This project employs a close reading of thematic as well as structural elements in order to examine the respective worlds of men and women and the author’s critique of the factors which led to this division. The project will also examine the reception of the author’s works in order to characterize their position within contemporary German literature.Germanic Studie
“Arabia” told in stories to the Germans : Intercultural Fictions by Rafik Schami
Often times, German so called ‘literature of migration’ has been the subject of general studies which regroup several authors. This work, exclusively dedicated to the work of the Syrian-born (1946) German-speaking author Rafik Schami, intends to reindividualize the work of this author and to consider it in its historicity and evolution. Building his work largely upon his 'Oriental' origins all-whilst writing in German, Schami instrumentalizes his prose, intertextual references and his own public and literary persona to connect himself to a certain lineage of discourse on the Orient and the Western reception responding to that discourse. From a dual approach – one socio-poetical, and the other text-analytical –, we examine on one hand the many postures of Schami's 'intercultural' authorship as they relate to storytelling between the East and the West, and on the other hand consider his work as an inquiry of power relations inherent to the interplay between the center and the periphery. Somewhere between popular literature and belles-lettres, the intercultural fictions of Rafik Schami are an attempt, even at times ambiguous, to introduce the Western reader an ‘elsewhere’. This 'elsewhere', sometimes portrayed as the world of the worker or the immigrant in Germany, some others as an Arab world vaguely defined and staged as an "Arabia", and most frequently as Syria, or Damascus and its surroundings in particular, forms the core of Rafik Schami's work. It is through the 'elsewhere' that Schami aspires to raise cultural awareness in his readers, and aims to interest them in the lives of the minorities and of the unvoiced groups and individuals whose stories he tells
Through other eyes: alterity in translation of (and in) Rafik Schami
The thesis at hand presents a commented translation of two narratives by the Syrian author Rafik Schami, who has been living in exile in Germany since 1971. By making use of a transcultural and socially-engaged literature, Schami offers in his writings an amalgam of traditions and brings up for discussion the debate about the cultural diversity and the coexistence amongst cultures. The goal of emphasizing the foreignness in the translation may only be achieved through a preliminary thought about the concepts of culture and the transcultural relations. These matters cast light upon the importance of the foreignizing translation practices and also give place to a discussion about its post-creative nature and how it aligns with Schamis sociocultural project
Between fairy tales and fiction books : "Märchen aus Malula" by Rafik Schami as a literary polemic against fairy tales
"Märchen aus Malula" by Rafik Schami, first published in 1997, is a collection of retold Syrian folk fairy tales. The mentioned work is used by the Syrian-born author as an expression of both direct (based on the open criticism of the typical elements of a fairy tale) and indirect (built on numerous modifications of the source text) polemic against original fairy tales. Therefore, the objective of this article is to identify, categorize and finally evaluate the passages of polemical character. The terminology introduced in the phenomenological research of fairy tales by Max Lüthi was used to determine the correlation between the original tales and Schami’s retellings.
Subverting the institutionalized reading tour: Rafik schami and Daniel Kehlmann
Germany ismore prolific than any other country in theworld in promoting its authors through book tours. Given the demands placed upon Germany\u27s authors through the institutionally organized reading circuit, contemporary authors sometimes turn their experiences of these tours into themes in their own works. This essay primarily examines two novels in which the institution of the \u27Lesereise\u27 is a significant focus: Rafik Schami\u27s \u27Sieben Doppelgänger\u27 (1999) and Daniel Kehlmann\u27s \u27Ruhm\u27 (2009). Both texts treat the difficulties and irritations to which authors are subject when they engage in such tours. While Schami\u27s novel uses the motif of the Double to explore Germans\u27 (mis)perception of cultural alterity and to underscore why the author took a hiatus from the reading circuit late in the 1990s, Kehlmann\u27s \u27Ruhm\u27, in which the institutionalized reading tour constitutes only one, albeit significant, thread, broadly examines issues of celebrity and identity in our highly technological age. © W.
