The author explores literary representations of violent intercourse between men and girls, during which the former sexually initiates the latter through coercion – hereafter referred to as a « forced sexual initiation ». Drawing her argument on three contemporary american novels – House Rules by Heather Lewis (1994), Tiger, Tiger by Margaux Fragoso and Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman (2012) – the author offers a critical analysis of the main motifs composing this type of sexual initiation : desubjectification, colonization of the body and the mind, as well as normalization. The author also examine, in conclusion, the potential ways in which the protagonists resubjectificate post-agression trauma.

T cell self-tolerance is thought to involve peripheral tolerance and negative selection, involving apoptosis of autoreactive thymocytes. However, evidence supporting an essential role for negative selection is limited. Loss of Bim, a Bcl-2 BH3-only protein essential for thymocyte apoptosis, rarely results in autoimmunity on the C57BL/6 background. Mice with T cell-specific over-expression of Bcl-2, that blocks multiple BH3-only proteins, are also largely normal. The nuclear receptor Nur77, also implicated in negative selection, might function redundantly to promote apoptosis by associating with Bcl-2 and exposing its potentially pro-apoptotic BH3 domain. Here, we report that T cell-specific expression of a Bcl2 BH3 mutant transgene results in enhanced rescue of thymocytes from negative selection. Concomitantly, Treg development is increased. However, aged BH3 mutant mice progressively accumulate activated, autoreactive T cells, culminating in development of multi-organ autoimmunity and lethality. These data provide strong evidence that negative selection is crucial for establishing T cell tolerance
The commitment in the contemporary «female novel»: Almudena Grandes and Gioconda Belli
Hemos seleccionado un total de seis novelas, tres de cada autora, para llevar a cabo nuestro análisis...This project we have written revolves around two main research pillars: the notion of commitment in literature and the categorized as contemporary "female novel" in the Spanish language, both in Spain as well as Latin America, by analyzing its emergence at the end of the XX century and the beginning of the XXI. As representatives of this movement, some of the works of Spanish author Almudena Grandes and Nicaraguan Gioconda Belli will be studied focusing the research topic on the places of birth of the two authors who, regardless of the distance between the two of them, share a common language that allows us to connect the authors through their novels. A double sense of commitment will be highlighted, that is to say, their commitment as authors and their commitment with History, especially with the representation of the female figure committed to key historical events. The late appearance of studies about the importance of the female role in History (at the end of the last century-encourages us to research deeper into this omnipresent topic in the works of both Gioconda Belli as well as Almudena Grandes. To conduct our research we have selected a total of six novels, three for each author...Depto. de Literaturas Hispánicas y BibliografíaFac. de FilologíaTRUEunpu
Active prospective surveillance study with post-discharge surveillance of surgical site infections in Cambodia
SummaryBarriers to the implementation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for surgical site infection (SSI) surveillance have been described in resource-limited settings. This study aimed to estimate the SSI incidence rate in a Cambodian hospital and to compare different modalities of SSI surveillance. We performed an active prospective study with post-discharge surveillance. During the hospital stay, trained surveyors collected the CDC criteria to identify SSI by direct examination of the surgical site. After discharge, a card was given to each included patient to be presented to all practitioners examining the surgical site. Among 167 patients, direct examination of the surgical site identified a cumulative incidence rate of 14 infections per 100 patients. An independent review of medical charts presented a sensitivity of 16%. The sensitivity of the purulent drainage criterion to detect SSIs was 83%. After hospital discharge, 87% of the patients provided follow-up data, and nine purulent drainages were reported by a practitioner (cumulative incidence rate: 20%). Overall, the incidence rate was dependent on the surveillance modalities. The review of medical charts to identify SSIs during hospitalization was not effective; the use of a follow-up card with phone calls for post-discharge surveillance was effective

Originally published on the Journal of Belgian History website. This issue contains four articles. Juliette Masquelier (University of Antwerp and Université Libre de Bruxelles) and Margaux Roberti Lintermans (Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve) examine the role of Christian and Socialist women’s movements in the reforms of childcare services in Francophone Belgium around the 1970s. Stef de Baedts writes about the evolution of the ideological worldview of Flemish Eastern Front volunteers during the Second World War. Matthew G. Stanard (professor at Berry College in Mt. Berry, Georgia) publishes an article on the film Bwana Kitoko ('Handsome Lord') by André Cauvin, an influential yet today somewhat forgotten film. Vincent Mazy (Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve) is the author of an article on the Saint-Léonard prison in Liège, a German-run prison during the First World War. Aristotelian and Duality Relations Beyond the Square of Opposition
© Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018. Nearly all squares of opposition found in the literature represent both the Aristotelian relations and the duality relations, and exhibit a very close correspondence between both types of logical relations. This paper investigates the interplay between Aristotelian and duality relations in diagrams beyond the square. In particular, we study a Buridan octagon, a Lenzen octagon, a Keynes-Johnson octagon and a Moretti octagon. Each of these octagons is a natural extension of the square, both from an Aristotelian perspective and from a duality perspective. The results of our comparative analysis turn out to be highly nuanced.sponsorship: We would like to thank Margaux Smets and three anonymous reviewers for their valuable feedback. Business Potential of Biohacking at work
In our modern economy, workers are overwhelmed by their high-demanding job; consequently, their well-being is suffering, and their performance is decreasing. No holistic approach has been developed to answer these issues; the ones existing target only one or few domains.
This paper studied the business potential of biohacking - recent movement that aims to optimize the body, mind, and environment - by researching the potential degree of people’s adoption of this concept and its practices at work.
A holistic view of biohacking at work has been developed, laying the foundation for the adoption research framework of this study. The author tested the research framework by conducting a survey in which both quantitative and qualitative questions were asked. A mixed-method methodology has been used to collect relevant data.
The participants were globally positive about adopting biohacking practices at work. On the one side, respondents are curious to try, enthusiasts about being more efficient and productive in their tasks but also about increasing their well-being at work. On the other side, some people do not think all practices can be implemented at work. They do not feel ready yet due to a lack of familiarity with the concept, judged as not suitable for all.
Results have shown a correlation between the biohacking experience at work and the causal effect. It appears that the more satisfying the biohacking at work experience is, the higher the degree of people’s adoption will be.
Future research could use a bigger and more representative sample to allow for inferential statistical analysis to test the validity and reliability of the biohacking at work adoption model
