Repressing the activity of protein kinase CK2 releases the brakes on mitochondria-mediated apoptosis in cancer cells
Execution of the mitochondrial death signaling is paramount to an effective response of cancer cells to chemotherapeutic intervention. Therefore, factors that inhibit the engagement of the mitochondrial amplification pathway, such as the expression of the anti-apoptotic proteins of the Bcl2 family or inactivation of inducers of mitochondrial permeability, play a critical role in the acquisition of the resistant phenotype. Protein kinase CK2 (CK2) is a ubiquitous serine/threonine kinase that is highly conserved in eukaryotic cells. This multifunctional protein kinase has been shown to impact cell growth and proliferation, as numerous growth-related proteins are substrates of CK2. More importantly, experimental evidence linking increased expression and activity of the kinase to human cancers, underscores the relevance of CK2 biology to cellular transformation and carcinogenesis. Of note, among the many cellular substrates of CK2 are proteins involved in the efficient execution of the mitochondria-dependent cell death signaling, such as Bid, caspase-2, ARC and others. Supporting this, recent reports have demonstrated that genetic manipulation of CK2 expression as well as pharmacological inhibition of its enzymatic activity sensitizes cancer cells to apoptotic stimuli. Due to the critical regulatory role that this kinase plays in cell fate determination in cancer cells, there is a tremendous increase in activity geared at the development of CK2-specific therapies. Here we provide a brief review of CK2-mediated inhibition of mitochondrial death signaling in cancer cells and its implications for the design of novel target specific therapeutic strategies. © 2011 Bentham Science Publishers Ltd
Access audit & scoring compliance assessment for the elderly-friendly mosque. Case study: heritage mosque - Masjid Diraja Sultan Suleiman & National Mosque Of Malaysia
The tremendous growth in the senior population makes Malaysia's ageing phenomenon inevitable. Additionally, Malaysia is seeing a tremendous rise in the urban population. It is becoming more and more important to examine how urbanisation affects the elderly because of how quickly it is occurring and how it affects the population. To effectively prepare nations for the opportunities and problems that an ageing population will present, a detailed assessment of their requirements is necessary. For the current policy and related elderly care provision framework to be changed, it is essential to comprehend the primary concerns surrounding the needs of the Malaysian elderly community. Thus, this study aims to produce an access audit by scoring for elderly- friendly heritage building focusing on mosque with reference to Malaysian Standards and related Acts/By-Laws. This study uses methodology (i) interview to validate draft access audit from literature and (ii) observation on scoring of access audit was used to obtain the data. Access audit is an examination of an existing building, its facilities and services, against pre-determine criteria to access its usability. The selected heritage building for this study is Masjid DiRaja Sultan Suleiman and National Mosque of Malaysia. In conclusion, this research to study the access audit by scoring for the elderly- friendly heritage building (mosque) to provided comfortably and safe to elderly
Integrating biophilic design in multi-generational housing: a conceptual framework for enhancing well-being and quality of life
This paper explores the integration of biophilic design principles into multigenerational housing environments to enhance the well-being and quality of life (QoL) of residents in Malaysia. Through biophilic design, the study aims to develop a conceptual framework that identifies key factors contributing to improved mental health, reduced stress, and overall QoL in multi-generational households. Adopted a scoping review methodology, using secondary data from the existing literature published between 2019 and 2024 to build the framework. The analysis consisted of a concept matrix to collate the data that has been collected and determine the key drivers of housing environment preference along with the sub-factors. Overall, the findings suggest that biophilic design elements like natural light, ventilation, green spaces and views of nature greatly contribute to residents' wellbeing across generations. Additionally, the research also discovered that Generation Alpha, Millennials, Generation X and Baby Boomers have such different needs which means spaces must be built for them all. The conceptual framework therefore provides a pragmatic guide that targets improved QoL by integrating biophilic principles in the design of multigenerational housing to alleviate stress, which is detrimental to mental health, among residents. This framework should help architects, urban planners and policymakers working towards healthier and more sustainable living environments

Manipulation of Gut Microbiota Using Acacia Gum Polysaccharide
Acacia gum (AG) is a branched-polysaccharide gummy exudate that consists of arabinose and galactose. The traditional practice in African-Middle Eastern countries uses this gum as medicine. Traditional use of AG is to treat stomach disease, which can be a potential functional food. In this research, commercially available AG from Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal was investigated as the prebiotic. The experiment employed a pH-controlled in vitro colon model inoculated with human fecal microbiota to mimic the human colon. Fermentation samples at 0, 6, 12, and 24 h were brought for short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography and bacterial enumeration via fluorescent in situ hybridization. Results showed that AG significantly promotes Bifidobacteria proliferation similar to fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) while inhibiting the Clostridium histolyticum group, commonly associated with gut dysbiosis. Acetate, propionate, and butyrate showed a similar trend to FOS (p > 0.05). The AG shows potential against gut dysbiosis, as it promotes gut-probiotics, through modulation of microbial population and SCFA production, especially butyrate
Composite Nonlinear Feedback For Vehicle Active Front Steering
In this paper, Composite Nonlinear Feedback (CNF) is applied on Active Front Steering (AFS) system for vehicle yaw stability control in order to have an excellent transient response performance. The control method, which has linear and nonlinear parts that work concurrently capable to track reference signal very fast with minimum overshoot, fast settling time, and without exceed nature of actuator saturation limit. Beside, modelling of 7 degree of freedom for typical passenger car with magic formula to represent tyre nonlinearity behaviour is also presented to simulate controlled vehicle as close as possible with a real situation. An extensive computer simulation is performed with considering a various profile of cornering manoeuvres with external disturbance to evaluate its performance in different scenarios. The performance of the proposed controller is compared to conventional Proportional Integration and Derivative (PID) for effectiveness analysis
