Accelerating DNA sequence alignment based on smith waterman algorithm using recursive variable expansion / Muhamad Faiz Ismail
Reconfigurable computing, in which general purpose processor (GPP) is increasingly used for high performance computing where massive fine-grain parallelism can be exploited. A challenge is to exploit such massive parallelism on LabVIEW and more specifically how to map an application on the heterogeneous underlying platform. Similar to hardware compilers, software compilers can use loops to exploit such parallelism. The existence of a dependence between data is one the constraints that limits parallelism in a program. In this dissertation, we propose a transformation called Recursive Variable Expansion (RVE), which can be applied to an important category of loops. It removes all the data dependences by expanding the variable with its dependence expression until the expression becomes only a function of known variables. We classify two types of expressions, one which expands polynomially, and other which expands exponentially on the number of input variables. Irrespective of the type of expression, when we map an expression on LabVIEW, the area (LUT) required is proportional to the number of terms in the expression. The exponentially expanding version is applicable to the category of dynamic programming (DP) problems for which RVE is combined with dataflow. We demonstrated better performance than dataflow only, which is the best technique known so far for such problems. We generalize the approach by proposing a framework such that the technique can be applied to a large range of DP problems. Finally, we validate the proposed DP framework using the Smith-Waterman (SW) algorithm, which is a widely used, computation and data intensive application in bioinformatics. We show that our implementation yields a two times speedup at the cost of almost three times more area as compared to the conventional dataflow traditional array implementation

Design and innovation of chuck for lathe machine / Muhamad Faiz Jofri ... [et al.]
Nowadays, many high technology machine, mechanical devices, and modern mechanical processes exist to create better product and produce it instantly. Lathe machine is one of the machines that create mechanical parts instantly. Even lathe machine is conventional machine but it is the basic process need to know in the educational field. One o f the part of lathe machine is chuck. It is function use to hold the work piece. The constraint of the existing chuck is it is cannot cut work piece that has length o f less than 40 mm. the cutter will collide with the existing chuck. Due to this problem, mini chuck are proposed to overcome the problem of cutting work piece that has length of less than 4 0 mm. Mini chuck are used on a lathe machine to hold the work piece that has length of less than 40 mm with minimum diameter of 20 mm and maximum diameter of 50 mm. Mini chuck is designed for ease of installation without need to change the existing chuck at lathe machine. It only need to be attached at existing chuck and can be used instantly. As a result, mini chuck can help the worker in workshop to perform better job while used lathe machine
Risk assessment of tower crane operation in high rise construction
Construction in Malaysia is rapidly increase nowadays especially involving high rise construction. As tower cranes also extensively used for hoisting materials in high rise construction, its operation also increasingly involved in a high rise construction. The usage of tower crane at construction site also created several of risk and hazard that will cause the accident toward the construction workers and public surrounding. This paper is to identify the operation hazard that occurred during tower crane operation and to propose a safe operation guideline for tower crane operation. The study began with collecting relevant tower crane hazard through conducting survey questionnaire for respondents at selected 3 numbers of high rise construction project. Through the survey and site observation, it was found that a several type of accident and hazard involved during the operation of tower crane. From the result, risk rating has been conducted to establish a safe operation guideline for the tower crane operation
Inheritance Sharing Expert System
One of the computer-based information systems is a website, usually this web information system is in offline or online form. Dissemination or delivery of information carried out on online information systems can be accessed by anyone and anywhere with the provision that they must have an internet connection. The purpose of this study is to provide a solution through the study of several theories and observations in the design of a web-based inheritance distribution expert system. The author uses the forward chaining method in designing an expert system. The application development methodology that I use is the ESDLC (Expert System Develop Life Cycle) method. The expected result of this research is the creation of an application design that can simplify the process of calculating inheritance in accordance with Islamic perspective because inheritance is often crucial which sometimes triggers disputes and causes rifts in family relationships and crime. Therefore we need an expert system that can assist in performing calculations
Preliminary evaluation of ORYZA (v3) crop growth model for MR269 rice variety
Rice (Oryza sativa) is a staple food for more than half of the world’s population, including about 30 million Malaysians. Rice self-sufficiency level (SSL) in Malaysia is currently at 70% and the level does not satisfy the local demand. Therefore, rice production needs to be increased to 80% by the year 2020 (MOA, 2015). The Malaysian Government aims to increase average rice grain production from 4.5 mt/ha to 6.0 mt/ha (Ismail, 2017). Among the ways to increase the production of rice is by improving crop management, such as finding best sowing dates, and best management practices such as optimum usage of fertilizer rates and rice varieties that suit weather conditions. Simulations of crop models are alternatives to costly trial experiments in exploring opportunities for increasing agricultural system productivity. Existing rice crop growth models have not been rigorously explored to assess productivity of Malaysian rice systems. Prior to scenario studies using a rice crop growth model, performance of the model must first be evaluated. Therefore, this paper reports preliminary evaluation on the performance of a rice crop growth model called ORYZA (v3). The model was evaluated against rice crop physiological properties collected at two farmers’ plots at IADA KETARA, Terengganu. The preliminary evaluation indicates that ORYZA (v3) has a potential in simulating the physiological properties of MR269, but the model must be calibrated. Calibration of the model is currently on-going
Ni0.6Zn0.4O Synthesised via a Solid-State Method for Promoting Hydrogen Sorption from MgH2
Magnesium hydrides (MgH2) have drawn a lot of interest as a promising hydrogen storage material option due to their good reversibility and high hydrogen storage capacity (7.60 wt.%). However, the high hydrogen desorption temperature (more than 400 °C) and slow sorption kinetics of MgH2 are the main obstacles to its practical use. In this research, nickel zinc oxide (Ni0.6Zn0.4O) was synthesized via the solid-state method and doped into MgH2 to overcome the drawbacks of MgH2. The onset desorption temperature of the MgH2–10 wt.% Ni0.6Zn0.4O sample was reduced to 285 °C, 133 °C, and 56 °C lower than that of pure MgH2 and milled MgH2, respectively. Furthermore, at 250 °C, the MgH2–10 wt.% Ni0.6Zn0.4O sample could absorb 6.50 wt.% of H2 and desorbed 2.20 wt.% of H2 at 300 °C within 1 h. With the addition of 10 wt.% of Ni0.6Zn0.4O, the activation energy of MgH2 dropped from 133 kJ/mol to 97 kJ/mol. The morphology of the samples also demonstrated that the particle size is smaller compared with undoped samples. It is believed that in situ forms of NiO, ZnO, and MgO had good catalytic effects on MgH2, significantly reducing the activation energy and onset desorption temperature while improving the sorption kinetics of MgH2
