Monetary policy and the commercial banks: an overview

    No full text
The relationship between monetary policy and economic activity is one of the basic questions of macroeconomics. Economists have addressed this question in a number of ways. The traditional approach focuses on the importance of the liability side of the bank balance sheet. However, the traditional approach becomes less relevant as the number of substitutes for conventionally defined money increases in consumer’s portfolio. Recently, discussion on this relationship has gone further to include both credit rationing and bank structure. Interest has also grown in exploring the possible links between Islamic banks and monetary policy, and the deregulation process in the banking system. As a result, the role of money supply as an operating target of monetary policy has been undermined. The deregulation of commercial banks has changed the transmission mechanism for monetary policy from money supply to interest rates and bank credi

The essence of the monetary system today is in using the fractional reserve banking system. Nonetheless, this system is not free of critics such as the fraud of making loans and creating deposits out of nothing which are argued to create distortion to the economy. Since 1930s, many economic scholars have debated the use of full reserve system as an alternative tool of monetary system.Islamic scholars also argue and reject the working of fractional reserve banking system and propose the idea of full reserve system. From the view of Islamic scholars, the full reserve system should be applied to avoid the riba’ in the monetary system. Hence, this study tries to assess whether the use of full reserve system can attain the Maqasid Shariah to support the alternative banking system. Using the argument on fractional reserve system, discussion on the concept of full reserve system, analysis of the impacts of full reserve system and the support from Quran and Hadith, this study concludes that the injustice and riba’ can be avoided under thefull reserve system, hence, attaining the Maqasid Shariah

Moisture absorption and diffusivity of epoxy filled layered-structure nanocomposite

This paper studies moisture absorption and diffusivity of epoxy reinforced layered structure nanocomposites and its effect on fracture toughness. Two different types of layered fillers employed in the study were clay and graphene platelets, in which both surface layers were unmodified and modified by characterized by swelling analysis and fracture toughness measurement. The outcomes surfactant. The nanocomposites were showed that the moisture absorption and diffusivity decreased with the addition of layered fillers. It was found that the modified graphene platelets and clay outperformed the unmodified layers and neat epoxy in terms of reduction of moisture absorption and diffusivity. The modified graphene platelets reduced the moisture uptake and diffusivity about 30% and 33%, respectively compare to neat epoxy, thus indicates its outstanding performance in barrier applications. However, once the nanocomposites were swelling in the water for 5 days, it is noticed that the fracture toughness of nanocomposites were reduced significantly about 35% in average. Nevertheless, the modified graphene platelets still display the better performance compare to the other samples although there was reduction of fracture toughness

whereby supporting the existence of competitive environment in the Malaysian Islamic banking market. Present study contributed to new knowledge in banking market concentration particularly for Islamic banking industry in the emerging economies such as Malaysia. Many past studies studying this issue had extensively examined the conventional banking system, but only several studies were on Islamic banking market. Hence, this study may enrich the existing literature on this issue, particularly for the Islamic banking industry. Policy recommendation from the findingsfirst, Malaysian Islamic banking industry needs a contestable market environment as to enable them to achieve better profit and efficient operation. Second, concentration ratios from this study can be used to identify the optimal number of banking firms in the Islamic banking industry
