Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Identifying the Higher Objectives (Maqāṣid) of the Qur’ān: A Search for Methodology

    No full text
Abstract: This research aims at defining some methodological tools that could help in understanding the higher objectives (maqāṣid) of the Qur’ān. It seems that there exists a lack of methodological identification in the previous literature. This could lead to confusion among readers of the subject to pinpoint the real objectives of the Qur’ān as a wide diversity in scholars’ identification of maqāṣid of the Qur’ān prevails in this regard and as of views are influenced by scholars’ personal and socio-contextual make-up. Consequently, the objectivity in identifying maqāṣid al-Qur’an is impaired. Such situations become major obstacles to the development of maqāṣid al-Qur’ān as a science of understanding the Qur’ān. If some well-defined methodological tools are developed, an objective identification of maqāṣid al-Qur’ān may be possible. A methodological identification of maqāṣid al-Qur’ān seems to be essential. Thus, this study explores some methodological approaches that could help in identifying the higher objectives of the Qur’ān

Microcredit and poverty alleviation? : the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh

Full text is available to authenticated members of The University of Auckland only. This thesis explores the provision of client-responsive, flexible, and quality financial services and the principles that could be followed by the Grameen Bank (GB) of Bangladesh to design such a microfinance system to achieve the twin goals of poverty alleviation for its poor clients and its own financial sustainability. The thesis specifically examines the GB’s impact in alleviating poverty, its role in enhancing the skills and efficiency of its rural poor women clients, and the sustainability of the impact on poverty alleviation. The findings of my research, based on a year-long field survey, demonstrate that while the role of the GB with its credit-alone policy in approaching financial sustainability has been largely successful, its role in alleviating poverty, and enhancing the efficiency of its clients has not been satisfactory. My research shows that the credit-alone approach is at best a palliative for poverty alleviation but not the panacea as much of the rhetoric surrounding the GB suggests. By enabling poor women to enter the labour force, the GB is significantly contributing to poverty alleviation through its microfinance mechanisms and at the same time enhancing its clients’ overall efficiency levels. Nonetheless, the GB could go even further in unlocking the creative and productive potential of its poor women clients through a properly designed and sensibly implemented pro-poor technology combined with clientresponsive, productivity-enhancing training programmes. In considering the sustainability of the poverty alleviation impact it may be said that the participants in the GB microfinance programmes tend to have low levels of skills and knowledge and are therefore limited to borrowing for self-employment in rural non-farm activities that have low growth potential. Unless activities with high growth potential accompanied by skills-enhancing efforts are supported by the GB, the possibility of sustainable poverty reduction is limited. Redesigned lending policies incorporating flexibility both in the amount of loan disbursed and the repayment schedule on the basis of household resource endowment, and a judicious mixture of short and long-term voluntary savings products alongside the standardised loans would provide the GB members with a range of convenient and useful services. Such a package of financial services answers many of the criticisms made of the GB’s minimalist approach in credit. My thesis, being a critical analysis, offers a challenge to the GB to reflect on its current policies, to think laterally and stop recycling myths, to focus on the task of providing client-responsive financial and non-financial services that will help achieve the seemingly contradictory goals of poverty alleviation for its poor clients and its own financial sustainability

This internship report is submitted in a partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Business Administration, 2015.Cataloged from PDF version of Internship report.Includes bibliographical references (page 33).In Creato Bangladesh, the internship program helped me a lot to learn about the practical environment and situation of a multinational institution and also make up a bridge between the theoretical and practical aspects and also to implement me. The internship report is prepared with respect to the three months internship program theoretical knowledge in the practical and realistic work environment. This report is composed of four chapters. In the first chapter Organizational Overview which consists of the organizational profile, vision, mission, management and organizational structure, product and services of the organization. Second chapter is regarding my internship which emphasis on theoretical aspect of the study. In chapter three, is the main and more descriptive part of the report where I tried to emphasize on Critical Evaluation of an Activation Program of Sunsilk Conditioner by Unilever “A Case Study of Bangladesh Market”. In this chapter I tried to emphasize in how the company organizes the activation program and what are criteria’s of evaluating an activation program properly. Finally chapter four is last chapters of the report where I want to give some concluding remark through conclusion give some sources of references. I tried to bridge up all the findings based on analysis and discussions. While preparing the report I always tried my best level to make it authentic and at the same time easily understandable. In spite of my heart and soul effort there may be some mistakes and unforeseen errors, which may arise due to my inexperience state.Tazul IslamB. Business Administratio

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
