Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. INCIDENCE OF INSECT PESTS COMPLEX OF BARI MOTOR -1 (PISUM SATIVUM) AND THEIR MANAGEMENT
A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Entomology, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN ENTOMOLOGY SEMESTER: JULY-DECEMBER, 2015The experiment was conducted in the central farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the period from November, 2014- March, 2015 to incidence of insect pest complex of BARI motor -1 and their management and their impact on natural enemies. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications and five treatments applied at 7 days interval. The treatments were T1: Mechanical and Cultural practices at 7 days interval, T2: Mechanical control and spraying Ripcord 10EC @ 1.0 ml//L of water at 7 days interval, T3: Spraying Suntaf 50SP @ 1.5 g/L of water at 7 days interval, T4: Spraying Topgan 10EC @ 1.0 ml/L of water at 7 days interval and T5: Untreated control. The result reveled that among different treatments Mechanical control and spraying of Ripcord 10EC @ 1.0 ml//L of water at 7 days interval was most effective in reducing the incidence of insect pests of BARI motor-1 and leaves infestation by white fly, aphid, and epilachna beetle (5.73 , 4.76 and 5.39%respectively) and in reducing pod infestation by number at early, mid and and late pod development stage caused by pod borer the lowest infestation (3.06, 4.23 and 5.00 % respectively) whereas the highest infestation (11.97, 13.75 and 14.81% respectively) was observed in T5. As the best treatment, it reduced the highest level of pod infestation conversely it increased the maximum level of plant and pod related yield attributes, that is T2 increased the maximum height (cm), number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod, and weight of 100-seeds (g) (50.94, 50.47, 5.27 and 17.15 respectively) of pea over control followed by Spraying Suntaf 50SP @ 1.5 g/L of water (49.04, 47.53, 5.07 and 16.63 respectively) and Topgan 10EC @ 1.0 ml/L of water (49.67, 48.47,5.13and 16.22 respectively). T2 also had the highest pod yield (2.09 t/ha) followed by T1, T3, and T4 (2.00, 2.02.and 1.987 t/ha).Considering the impact of management practices on the population of natural enemy, T2 had adversely affected and reduced the highest population of adult ladybird beetle and field ant (83.10% and 80.00% respectively) over control followed by T3 (73.70% and 78.60%) Though, T2 reduced the highest level of insect pests infestation of BARI motor-1 and including other chemical treatments, conversely they mostly harmful to the beneficial arthropod biodiversity in the pea ecosystem by reducing the maximum level of the natural enemy population than any other newer insecticides which were comparatively safe, and would be fit well into the management of insect pests of BARI motor-1
Exploring first-time nascent entrepreneurs’ on-going entrepreneurial opportunity recognition : a case study of London Metropolitan University’s preincubator
Extant literature lacks the integrative theory of first-time (pure) nascent entrepreneurs’ ongoing opportunity recognition. There is an academic consensus that the investigation of ongoing opportunity recognition may provide new insights into entrepreneurs’ behaviours and cognitive processes, i.e. what they do and how they do it.
This study has responded to this knowledge gap by addressing the following research question: how do pre-incubator supported nascent entrepreneurs recognise entrepreneurial opportunities? The objectives of this study were:
(1) to explore the process by which they come up with opportunity ideas;
(2) to explore behavioural actions that shape opportunity ideas into opportunities;
(3) to understand the role of the pre-incubator on their cognitive and behavioural process; and
(4) to provide recommendations for effective opportunity-recognition practice.
A single qualitative case study was adopted for the study of 13 lead graduates who were supported through the pre-incubator’s business start-up programme. Data were collected through semi-structured interview, mind-mapping and participants observation, and analysed by adopting an inductive thematic analysis method.
Findings show that nascent entrepreneurs’ opportunity recognition comprises two discreet, interrelated components: opportunity awareness and opportunity search. Opportunity awareness is an intentional process by which they translate their experiential problems and perceived gaps into demand- or supply-driven opportunity ideas. It drives their opportunity search behaviour. They rely on various social networks to test the veracity of their opportunity ideas and search for opportunity-related information. They prioritise their social network reliance according to their social relationships. This behaviour is guided by their emotional attachment to opportunities. It is found that pre-incubator managers moderate their emotional attachment and subsequent search behaviours. As they (nascent entrepreneurs) rely on various social networks, their confirmation bias mediates opportunity recognition belief reinforcement and the input factors provided by social network members.
The findings are significant to pre-incubator managers. They provide revelatory insights into their supported nascent entrepreneurs’ emotions, behaviours, and cognition in relation to opportunity recognition. This study also makes noteworthy contributions to entrepreneurship literature by providing new theoretical insights into the opportunity recognition of first-time (pure) nascent entrepreneurs
Characterization of skeletal phenotype of a bone specific Dlx3 knock out mice
This project aimed to understand role of Dlx3 in bone formation and metabolism. We used Cre-LoxP principle to generate bone specific Dlx3 knock out mice. Mice carrying a 3.6 kb type I collagen fragment upstream to Cre recombinase transgene were used to drive Cre expression in bone. Use of this promoter prevented Cre mediated genomic rearrangement of floxed Dlx3 (FDlx3) allele (Dlx3 transgene with 2 LoxP sites flanking the gene) and embryonic lethality during early embryonic development. The bone specific Dlx3 knock out mice were homozygous for FDlx3 and carried one copy of Cre transgene (F/F, Cre+). A skeletal phenotype was not detectable by whole mount skeletal staining of knock out and age and sex matched control mice. However, quantitative measurement of long bone, vertebrae and calvaria using microCT detected significant increase in bone mass in the conditional knock out mice compared to the control group. Von Kossa staining of undecalcified bone sections supported this finding. The conditional knock out mice had lower number of osteoblasts that was statistically significant in male knock out mice. Analysis of serum markers Trap5b and CTX were done to see change in osteoclast differentiation and function respectively. No difference was observed in these markers, suggesting osteoclast differentiation and function were not affected in these mice. Bone formation rate and mineral apposition rate were not significantly different either. Gene expression was studied using RNA from cultured cells by quantitative PCR method and showed changes in the expression pattern of other Dlx genes and multiple bone specific genes including expression of osteocalcin (OCN), bone sialoprotein (BSP), Collagen I (Col1a1) and alkaline phosphatese. We did not find an osteoblast differentiation defect when studied in the cell culture. We believe that Dlx3 is required for bone metabolism but dispensable for osteoblast differentiation. We also believe that lack of Dlx3 and loss of its transcriptional control over target genes result in a higher bone mass in the conditional knock out mice.
