Age of schooling in CP1, socioeconomic level and risk of dropping out of school among 4th-grade students in Ivory Coast
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the age of enrolment in the first-yearpreparatory course (CP1), the socioeconomic level and the risk of dropping out of school among 4th grade students in Ivory Coast. To this end, a sample of 96 students from the 4th grade class is constituted. This sample was subjected to an identification questionnaire and filled in the Evaluation Kit for Potential Dropouts (Janosz M., Archambault I., Lacroix M. & Lévesque J., 2007). These students also took part in a semi-structured interview. The results obtained at the end of the statistical processing and the analysis of thematic content show that the risk of dropping out is greater among pupils who start CP1 early than among those who start this class at the officially indicated age. However, this age effect is modulated by the socioeconomic background of the students. These results raise questions about the need to enrol children prematurely in primary school, especially in disadvantaged areas. Thus, the present study suggests that the age of enrolment should be taken into account in the prevention of the risk of dropping out of school. It also provides guidance on the intervention programs to be recommended in situations of risk of school dropout
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
This study analyzes the relationship between the level of sensation seeking and drinking behaviors among adolescents in school in Abidjan. To do this, the study focuses on a sample of 240 participants whose age is between 12 and 19 years old. They were subjected to the Arnett (1994) Sensation Seeking Measurement Test (ISSA) to assess their level of sensation seeking. Drinking behaviors were determined by the questionnaire (ADOSPA) of Knight & al (2002) as well as an interview guide. The results indicate that adolescents with a high level of sensation seeking demonstrate self-medicated drinking behavior in combination with other psychoactive substances to meet their physiological need unlike their counterparts with a high level of sensation seeking. low. These results corroborate those of previous studies on risky behaviors. They confirm the behavioral predictions of the theories examined. Such results highlight the need to carry out actions to prevent the use of psychoactive substances among adolescents. This study could also be used to regulate access, sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. In particular the reduction of spaces authorized to sell alcohol, the prohibition of the purchase of alcohol at least 18 years old and the limitation of alcohol advertisements
Sexe, Type De Familiarite Et Perception Du Handicap Mental Chez Des Individus Vivant En Cote d’Ivoire (Cas De La Trisomie 21)
This paper focuses on examining the influence of gender and the type of familiarity of individuals on their perception of mental disability, particularly that of trisomy 21. A sample of 100 subjects was used for the study, some of whom are undergoing training at the Institute. National Social Training Institute (NSTI) and others are individuals belonging to the immediate environment of children with trisomy 21. These groups of subjects were obtained using the reasoned choice sampling technique which comprises of 50 men and 50 women between 21 and 54 years old. An identification questionnaire was used to determine the sex and type of familiarity of the subjects. The perception of Trisomy 21 is, in turn, assessed by a questionnaire developed with reference to that of Hetebrij and Racine (2011). The results obtained indicate that the influence of type of familiarity on the perception of trisomy 21 is significant, while that of sex is not. Such results suggest considering these factors in the care of people with disabilities in general and those with trisomy 21 in particular
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The aim of the study was to examine the effect of play-based learning and emotion regulation strategies on affective engagement in Ivorian students during the primary-secondary post-transition period. 40 students from disadvantaged backgrounds who had participated in a school transition support activity were tested twice (before and after the intervention) using the affective engagement scale of Archambault et al. (2009). The strategies they prefer to use to regulate their emotions in various school activities were listed and classified as functional or dysfunctional according to their adaptive functionality. The results obtained using the stata 16 indicate that participation in play-based learning activities creates an increase in affective engagement in subjects using functional strategies and slows down affective disengagement in students using dysfunctional emotion regulation strategies. This information could be used by practitioners to prevent school dropout in disadvantaged areas. Article visualizations
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
