From vesicles to nanocomposites, from Saclay to Grenobleand Montpellier, a scientific journey with Isabelle Grillo
International audienceA few examples of experimental studies of soft matter systems will be presented toillustrate some aspects of the personal and scientific journey of Isabelle Grillo. I have metIsabelle for the first time almost twenty-five years ago in the Bombannes school, and sincethen a combination of geographic coincidence, common scientific topics – from surfactantsystems to polymer nanocomposites -, and a shared interest in a technique, neutronscattering, made us walk some steps of this journey together. While the extra-ordinarystructure of many of the systems Isabelle took interest in will be presented by world-leadingexperts in this symposium, my presentation will shortly highlight vesicular structures, andthen bridge the gap between PhD work supervised by us on nanocomposites to our currentunderstanding of the structure of such nanomaterials

On April 12, 2022, Sheila Vieira de Camargo Grillo, a professor and researcher at the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo, kindly welcomed us to her home for this interview. We were able to hear the author talk about the essential points of a new approach to scientific investigation in Brazil, Comparative Discourse Analysis or Contrastive Discourse Analysis (the name adopted in France, where it originated). Professor Sheila Grillo, based on the questions we asked, spoke about, among other topics, the emergence of the epistemological principles of Comparative Discourse Analysis in Brazil, mentioned some of the important events that have taken place until 2022, and also told us about the importance of the work carried out between herself and other researchers from the Diálogo Research Group (CNPq/USP) with professors and researchers at CLESTHIA - axe sens et discours, from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris 3. Thus, we take this opportunity to thank the interviewee for the welcoming reception and for the information provided. We invite the reader of Linha D\u27Água to appreciate the result of this work
Insertion of anionic synthetic clay in lamellar surfactant phases
We describe the different mixed colloidal solutions that can be obtained when mixing equivalent quantities of a synthetic anionic clay to surfactants forming lamellar phases in the absence of added salt. The important quantity driving toward insertion or depletion is the osmotic pressure, of the lamellar phase and of the clay alone. Competition for water is the main driving force toward dispersion, inclusion or exclusion (phase separation). In the case of a nonionic surfactant () mixed with Laponite, undulations quenched by the surfactant-decorated clay lead to swelling; inclusion is not observed due to differences in rigidity. Long-range order is weakened leading eventually to the exclusion of surfactant in excess. In the case of a double anionic system (AOT-Laponite), electrostatic is dominant and the three regimes are encountered. In the catanionic case, admixing the double chain cationic lipid DDAB to the clay (in large charge excess), the platelets are coated by a positively charged bilayer. Long-range order is very efficiently dampened. From a low threshold (2% by weight), there is exclusion of a clay-poor collapsed lamellar phase, detected by the swelling of the main phase. The cationized clay does not interfere with the molecular force balance: the location of the critical point is unchanged. At high Laponite concentration, a very puzzling microstructure is observed. Some phase diagrams as well as representative SANS and SAXS data are extracted from the complete results concerning the lyotropic lamellar phase mixing problem available with all measures and evaluations of osmotic pressures in the PhD of the late Isabelle Grillo
A Travelogue from the Field
Chapter 5 of the book "Photography and Invisible Borders: Spaces of Imagination between Switzerland and Italy" develops a mobile epistemology of the Swiss-Italian borderscape, moving on the ground along trajectories of cross-border work and migration. Combining methodologies from urban studies, art history, photography, and practice-based research, the chapter builds a travelogue in two sections. A photographic narrative and a textual narrative, at the same time autonomous and interrelated, complement each other. The photographic narrative is made of a series of photographs shot by the author and of other images from different sources, including archives. Writings from fieldwork and extracts of conversations come together into the textual narrative. The photo-textual travelogue examines the multifaceted aspects of the Swiss-Italian border. It looks into the daily life and spatial dynamics leading to the border, encompassing such spaces as a nursery for cross-border workers’ children, a bar, commuter parking lots, and residential areas. The narrative unfolds through walks across border woods, interweaving local legends and reaching industrial compounds. The morning rush at the border, voices of workers, and flows towards the “fashion valley” industrial area and Lugano are explored. The temporal dimension is considered at a migrant centre in Como. A transnational train journey reveals use of the train’s use by cross-border workers and the challenges faced by migrants attempting to cross. Spatial shifts into car parks, used for both worker commutes and migrant accommodation after the so-called migration crisis of 2016, are examined. The chapter also explores night walks, smuggling activities, and the gendered dimension of the borderscape, particularly the presence of brothels. The complex strategy of migrant transfers from the northern border to Taranto in Southern Italy, implemented in response to the migration crisis, serves as a concluding focal point, illustrating the extended territorial dimensions of the border’s reality.Fondation Universitaire Stichtin
The 50th anniversary of the introduction of the mouflon to the Caroux (Hérault) massif: from naturalistic experiment to land management and the development of a resource
Abstract : The mouflon sheep population in the Caroux massif in the French department (département) of Hérault has
increased substantially since the animal was
introduced to the area in 1956. The mouflon is not only a symbol of the area for tou-
rists but also a resource for hunting tourism. However, the spontaneous advance of the
forest, which local actors are striving to halt,
is limiting the expansion of suitable habitats
for the animal.Derioz Pierre, Grillo Xavier, Keogh Brian.
