Adele Shtern: Catalog of Works and Images
No full textAdele Shtern was born in Montreal and received her BA in Design from Concordia University. She was awarded a Design Canada grant to study Graphic Design in the MFA program at Yale University. She has been a Professor of Art at the Tyler School of Art, the University of Bridgeport, FIT, and Baruch College/CUNY. She is currently an adjunct Professor in the Music and Art Department at BMCC/CUNY. She lives in Long Island City, NY where she continues to be an active artist. She is the co-author of an oral history book entitled Nicky D from LIC.
Shtern is considered a pioneer in computer art. Her involvement with digital art began in 1983 at the New York Institute of Technology on a University of Bridgeport grant. Committed to the process of art as a form of healing, Shtern conceived Lotus Cusp, a multimedia presentation re 9.11 with her BMCC/CUNY students. Several of her images are now on the 9.11 online Memorial Artists’ Registry. Her work has been exhibited extensively in solo and group shows in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. It has been published internationally and has received many awards.
Adele Shtern embraces her calling as a multi-disciplinary artist using traditional and digital media. She takes pleasure in discovering visually interesting sights in diverse loci. Her creative process involves opening herself to the revelation of seeing the familiar in new ways. Painterly and abstract aspects of the environment catch her eye.
Shtern’s digital photos are part of an ongoing series of photographic explorations. Some of the sites have since been transformed or no longer exist. This record preserves the memory of what once existed, as a visual and cultural archive.

Analysis Of Idioms Found In Selected Song Lyrics Of Adele
No full textThis article discusses the analysis of idioms found in Adele song lyrics. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out by the author through Adele song lyrics such as Easy on me, Rolling in the dark, Someone like you, Hello, Send my love and others. The final product features every idiom Palmer uses in select songs. Partial idiomatic phrases consist of 7 (70%) phrases, followed by phrasal verbs (2, 20%), and prepositional verbs (1, 10%). In some of Adele songs, some idioms terms with unique meanings derived from Adele songs dominate. There are many idioms, each with a special meaning. Altered Expression of the CB1 Cannabinoid Receptor in the Triple Transgenic Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease
No full textThe endocannabinoid system has gained much attention as a new potential pharmacotherapeutic target in various neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the association between CB1 alterations and the development of AD neuropathology is unclear and often contradictory. In this study, brain CB1 mRNA and CB1 protein levels were analyzed in 3 × Tg-AD mice and compared to wild-type littermates at 2, 6 and 12 months of age, using in-situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Semiquantitative analysis of CB1 expression focused on the prefrontal cortex (PFC), prelimbic cortex, dorsal hippocampus (DH), basolateral amygdala complex (BLA), and ventral hippocampus (VH), all areas with high CB1 densities that are strongly affected by neuropathology in 3 × Tg-AD mice. At 2 months of age, there was no change in CB1 mRNA and protein levels in 3 × Tg-AD mice compared to Non-Tg mice in all brain areas analyzed. However, at 6 and 12 months of age, CB1 mRNA levels were significantly higher in PFC, DH, and BLA, and lower in VH in 3 × Tg-AD mice compared to wild-type littermates. CB1 immunohistochemistry revealed that CB1 protein expression was unchanged in 3 × Tg-AD at 2 and 6 months of age, while a significant decrease in CB1 receptor immunoreactivity was detected in the BLA and DH of 12-month-old 3 × Tg-AD mice, with no sign of alteration in other brain areas. The altered CB1 levels appear, rather, to be age-and/or pathology-dependent, indicating an involvement of the endocannabinoid system in AD pathology and supporting the ECS as a potential novel therapeutic target for treatment of AD

A Critical Discourse Analysis of Song "Easy on Me" by Adele
No full textThe purpose of this research is to analyze how the role or attitude of the author towards a song that was created by examining the effect, judgment, and appreciation. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method by using three analytical processes proposed by Fairclough's CDA model. The data from this research are the lyrics of Adele's song entitled "Easy on Me". The findings show that Adele describes her feelings in this song explicitly by using a figure of speech. In her song, Adele conveys the effect of how worried and devastated she is when faced with the problem of her divorce. In the aspect of assessment, Adele admires nature through her own point of view, so that some of her song lyrics are interpreted using the beauty and serenity of nature. Based on appreciation, Adele assesses that divorce or separation in a relationship is the end of her journey, so she wants to give up and surrender
Housing as a Means, Not an End: The Health and Wellbeing of HMO Residents in Newcastle-upon-Tyne
No full textIn mid-2011, the Newcastle Inclusion Lab formed, in response to a Cabinet Office call for the formation of ten local inclusion labs across the UK, with the purpose of exploring innovative solutions to problems of multiple disadvantages in their areas. In Newcastle-upon-Tyne, issues around Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) – specifically, large hostel-type accommodation operating in the Housing Benefit sub-sector of the private rented market – were identified as key knowledge gaps. An HMO is a building which is occupied by at least three tenants who form more than one household, with residents sharing toilet, bathroom and kitchen facilities. Nationally, too, there is limited understanding of the number of people living in this type of accommodation, the demographics and service needs of residents, the lived experiences of residents and the inequalities associated with living in these properties. Evidence suggests that HMOs are loci of disadvantage, but the extent to which they reinforce, in addition to being products of, disadvantage and the reasons for this are unknown (for further discussion, see Rugg et al, 202; Rugg and Rhodes, 2008; Northern Ireland Housing Executive, 2009; Spencer and Corkhill, 2013; Crisis, 2014; Rose and Davies, 2014; Turley and Davies, 2014). Following a successful application to the Cabinet Office and a grant award from the Northern Rock Foundation, the project team have sought to develop an evidence base about a range of issues relating to privately-run HMOs in the area

This study examines patient preferences regarding delivery mode of home exercise programs. Understanding of patient preferences in rehabilitation supports client centeredness and patient–practitioner relationships and is recommended as an evidence-based technique to improve client adherence.

No full textThis paper aims at reconstructing the reasons why no close relationships exist between sociology and labour law. The problems outlined will be addressed both in theoretical and methodological terms. After dealing with the correspondence between specific areas of labour law and sociological issues and with the sociological tradition in this field, the author reconstructs the relationships starting from E. Durkheim's thought, devoted to promote solidarity and social integration. The genesis of the split between sociology and labour law has been traced back to M. Weber and his controversy with the Verein für Socialpolitik. While Verein's intention was to inspire social politics during the industrialization process, Weber's intention was that social sciences should not be based on ideological options nor sustain political solutions. In contemporary times the gap between labour law and sociology is due to the fact that the social- economic sphere has prevailed on the juridical-political one. The author draws the conclusion that a stronger relationship between sociology and labour law is needed
