Senegal : primary schools grapple with digital technology
As more and more computers enter African schools, a debate has centred around the role technology should play in development. On the one hand, proponents argue information and communication technologies are necessary to help bring Africa into the 21st century and out of poverty. But critics say resources could be better spent elsewhere, especially given the costs of training, maintenance and disposal of the machines in an environmentally friendly way. The article weighs both sides of the argument
Malawi : new farming practices grow healthier children
Drawing on research by agronomists, nutritionists and development experts, the project’s staff taught intercropping methods to farmers as well as how to grow different varieties of legumes such as soy beans, peanuts, and peas. The project currently has 7,000 participants and is able to add 500 more every year through a seed multiplication programme that distributes legume seeds to new farmers. Malnutrition rates have decreased. The connection between malnutrition and farming practices was made in 2000, when hospital staff together with a Canadian researcher, interviewed parents of children admitted to the nutrition unit

Workflow management support in IRIN
S.832-841This paper describes work coordination support in the distributed IRIN system that is based on a Kernel/2r framework. Kernel/2r implements the Conceptual Reference Model CoRe of the EUREKA Software Factory project (ESF). The ESF CoRe identifies different integration stages that cover the cooperation of people, man-machine dialogue, and the integration of tools. Kernel/2r provides a set of process engines that control the execution of process fragments. Those form a part of an overall process model which defines the coordinated performance of activities on the different CoRe integration stages. IRIN is the ISST research instance of a software factory that is being set up as a demonstrator of ESF concepts and of the usability of Kernel/2r as an integration platform for complex systems like software factories

This thesis describes the design and testing of a 750 W three-phase inverter for testing the control algorithm for a high-speed, high-frequency 1 MW motor.
A general introduction to three-phase inverters, switching schemes and various topologies is given and reasoning for the selection of the conventional hex-bridge voltage source inverter (VSI) is provided. Further, the thesis provides a rationale for the selection of the switching device for the hex-bridge. The designs of the pre-charge circuit, bootstrap circuit, short-circuit protection and PWM overlap protection circuit are also provided. The hardware testing of the inverter with a purely resistive load was completed and the results and the challenges faced are discussed.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2019-05-01The student, Irin Jose, accepted the attached license on 2017-04-19 at 09:27.The student, Irin Jose, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2017-04-19 at 09:28.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2017-04-24 at 08:29.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10887 on 2017-08-10 at 15:06:15Made available in DSpace on 2017-08-10T20:33:08Z (GMT).
