Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Inequality and Democracy: Micro-level Evidence from East Asia
No full text이 논문은 최근 정치경제학의 핵심 주제로 부상하고 있는 불평등에 주목한다. 그 중에서도 불평등과 민주주의의 관계를 다루고 있는 재분배 이론과 엘리트경쟁 이론의 주요 행위자에 대한 상반된 미시적 가정 중 무엇이 동아시아 시민들의 태도를 더 잘 설명하는지 확인한다. 즉, 불평등이 높을 때, 재분배 모형이 가정하는 것처럼 동아시아에서는 부유한 사람들은 민주주의를 반대하고 가난한 사람들은 민주주의를 지지하는가? 아니면 엘리트경쟁 모형이 가정하는 것처럼 불평등이 높을 때, 부유한 사람들은 민주주의를 지지하고 가난한 사람들의 민주주의 대한 지지는 불확실한가? 이들 질문에 답하기 위해 본 연구는 아시아바로미터조사(Asian Barometer Survey, ABS) 데이터를 활용해 동아시아 13개국을 대상으로 가난한 사람들과 부유한 사람들의 민주주의에 대한 태도를 분석한다. 즉, 소득 지위에 따라 민주주의에 대한 지지에 차이가 있는지 그리고 그러한 차이가 불평등의 수준에 따라 더욱 두드러지는지를 살펴본다. 전체적으로 분석 결과는 재분배 이론이 가정하는 미시 토대가 엘리트경쟁 이론이 가정하는 미시 토대보다 비교적 약함을 시사하였으나, 이는 분석된 민주주의의 차원 모두에 있어 일관적이지는 않았다. 이는 가치와 신념과 같은 비물질적 동기를 고려하지 않고 불평등과 민주주의를 연결하는 정치경제 이론의 미시 수준의 토대가 적어도 동아시아의 맥락에서는 견고하지 못함을 시사하고 있다.
This paper assesses the descriptive validity of the individual-level assumptions of political economy theories linking inequality to democracy in the context of East Asia by utilizing cross-national public opinion data. We primarily focus on how people at the top end of the income distribution differ from those at the bottom end in support for democracy and opposition to dictatorship, depending on the level of income inequality. The statistical result shows that the micro-level foundations assumed by the redistribution theory find less empirical support than the ones assumed by the elite competition theory, but this is not consistent in all countries. In East Asia, the relationship between income levels and support for democracy was relatively weaker than expected in the context of inequality.
