Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Model-driven discovery of adaptive mechanisms and underground metabolism in Escherichia coli
Evidence suggests that novel enzyme functions evolved from low-level promiscuous activities in ancestral enzymes. Yet, the evolutionary dynamics and physiological mechanisms of how such side activities contribute to systems-level adaptations are poorly understood. Furthermore, it remains untested whether knowledge of an organism's promiscuous reaction set ('underground metabolism') can aid in forecasting the genetic basis of metabolic adaptations. In this dissertation, novel approaches toward exploring promiscuity in the space of a metabolic network are described. The work leverages genome-scale models, which have been widely used for predicting growth phenotypes in various nutrient environments and following genetic perturbation in Escherichia coli. Failure modes of model predictions in relation to gene essentiality are explored as opportunities for targeting biological discovery, suggesting the presence of unknown underground pathways stemming from enzymatic cross-reactivity or suggesting limitations of experimental conditions stemming from short growth tests. Workflows are presented that couple constraint-based modeling and bioinformatic tools with knockout strain analysis and long-term growth experiments for the purpose of enhancing knowledge and predictability of enzyme promiscuity at the genome scale. Furthermore, a computational model of underground metabolism and laboratory evolution experiments are employed to examine the role of enzyme promiscuity in the acquisition and optimization of growth on predicted non-native substrates. Promiscuous enzyme activities played key roles in multiple phases of adaptation. Genes underlying the phenotypic innovations were accurately predicted by genome-scale model simulations of metabolism with enzyme promiscuity. Thus, it is shown that computational approaches will be essential to synthesize the complex role of promiscuous activities in models of evolutionary adaptation

The Effect of Blood Transfusion on Oxygen Delivery in Anemic Hamsters
Blood transfusions have long been the preferred treatment for severely anemic patients in medical practice, but recent studies show increased long-term mortality rates following a blood transfusion. Physical predictions of the effects of a blood transfusion show overall decreased oxygen delivery, in contradiction with the observed improved delivery in practice. To further explore this, Golden Syrian Hamsters were made anemic to 50% hematocrit deficiency and then transfused differing amounts of 70-72% pRBC blood units. The average percent change in physical parameters was calculated and compared between the normal baseline state, anemic state, and the post-transfusion state. Results suggest that increase in overall blood flow in response to hemodilution and blood transfusion is a major contributing factor in increasing oxygen delivery, in addition to increasing hematocrit levels. Further experimentation to confirm the effective degree of blood flow on increased oxygen delivery post-transfusion is a promising path to gaining deeper understanding of the physical effects of blood transfusion in anemic patients
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Rapid restoration of microcirculatory blood flow with hyperviscous and hyperoncotic solutions lowers the transfusion trigger in resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock
Resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock relies on fluid retransfusion. However, the optimal properties of the fluid have not been established. The aim of the present study was to test the influence of the concentration of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) solution on plasma viscosity and colloid osmotic pressure (COP), systemic and microcirculatory recovery, and oxygen delivery and consumption after resuscitation, which were assessed in the hamster chamber window preparation by intravital microscopy. Awake hamsters were subjected to 50% hemorrhage and were resuscitated with 25% of the estimated blood volume with 5%, 10%, or 20% HES solution. The increase in concentration led to an increase in COP (from 20 to 70 and 194 mmHg) and viscosity (from 1.7 to 3.8 and 14.4 cP). Cardiac index and microcirculatory and metabolic recovery were improved with HES 10% and 20% when compared with 5% HES. Oxygen delivery and consumption in the dorsal skinfold chamber was more than doubled with HES 10% and 20% when compared with HES 5%. This was attributed to the beneficial effect of restored or increased plasma COP and plasma viscosity as obtained with HES 10% and 20%, leading to improved microcirculatory blood flow values early in the resuscitation period. The increase in COP led to an increase in blood volume as shown by a reduction in hematocrit. Mean arterial pressure was significantly improved in animals receiving 10% and 20% solutions. In conclusion, the present results show that the increase in the concentration of HES, leading to hyperoncotic and hyperviscous solutions, is beneficial for resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock because normalization of COP and viscosity led to a rapid recovery of microcirculatory parameters

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
