Confirming a strong disconnection between academe and the health care institutions in terms of quantity and content of research
As there is a disparity in creation of research in the academe and utilization of research knowledge, the necessity to ascertain the phenomenon is warranted as the professional practice is being challenged. Hence, this descriptive qualitative research aims to confirm the strong disconnection that exists between the health research production in the academe and the research utilization by the health care institutions in terms of both quantity and content of the researches. I revealed that the development of the research agenda serve as the foundation crucial in the transfer of knowledge. In addition, the production of research in the academe varies with the utilization among health care professionals in the health care institution. The variation can be described in terms of the quantity and content of research from the academe which can be further explained to the fact that students are producing researches purely for academic purposes only to finish a degree without aiming for utilization. Also, most research information they utilized come from sources other than what the graduate- students in the academe are producing. Thus, this research primarily confirms the strong disconnection that exists between the health production in the higher education institutions and the research utilization by the health care professionals in the health care institutions
The academe as the source of research and the knowledge utilization uptake in the health care system
This descriptive-correlational research determined the relationship between the perceived level of the characteristics of the academe as the source of research and the knowledge utilization uptake of the academic research among health care professionals in the health care systems. Researcher-made questionnaire was used consisting of items related to credibility, accuracy, reasonableness, support, sophistication and communication quality was also employed. Moreover, an adapted questionnaire from the Knowledge Utilization Uptake Scale was used. The overall level of the perceived characteristics of the source in terms of the credibility, accuracy, reasonableness, support, sophistications and communication quality was fair. Generally, a very poor level of knowledge utilization uptake of the academic research was identified. Respondents were highly aware of the research but very poor in the aspects of reception, cognition, discussion, reference, effort, adoption and impact. Pearson r revealed a strong positive correlation between the variables. Finally, the perceived level on the characteristics of the source of the health research was associated with the knowledge utilization uptake. Hence, this contributed to the theory on the research translation from the academe to the health care system that source was an influential element
Utilization of Allogeneic Red Blood Cell Units in Elective Gynecologic Surgeries
This research determined the pattern and indices of blood usage, and the relationship between elective gynecologic surgeries and utilization of allogeneic red blood cell units in a tertiary retained hospital in Cebu City, Philippines. All patients who underwent elective gynecologic surgeries admitted from October 1, 2008 to December 31, 2008 were included in this study. This 3- month study utilized a descriptive-correlational research design. A total of 63 patients underwent elective gynecologic surgeries during the study period. A total of 150 red blood cell units were ordered, but only 142 units were procured. All units were cross-matched but only 52 units were transfused. The overall frequency of blood transfusion related to elective gynecologic surgery was 30.37%. This meant that 69.63% of the blood was not utilized. Ten patients needed preoperative transfusions because of preexisting anemia, eight because of excessive bleeding during surgery, and nine had postoperative transfusions. The overall crossmatched/transfusion ratio of 2.73 revealed insignificant blood utilization. However, the probability of transfusion of 31.74% and the index of transfusion of 0.86 were indicative of significant utilization. There was inefficiency in the ordering of allogeneic red blood cell units in elective gynecologic surgeries. However, there was an appropriate number of units ordered for the patients. Moreover, a pre-operative cross-match was required for the procedure. Lastly, the type of surgery was not a determinant in the blood utilization
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Hypothesizing the Outcome of the EFA Goal No. 6 for 2015 A Deductive Consequence of a Proposed Quality Instruction
This is a descriptive study which uses hierarchical cluster analysis to group 17 teacher respondents to establish similarity of their characteristics in terms of procedural and conceptual knowledge, and their ability to examine errors in procedure and reasoning. The data suggested that conceptual and procedural knowledge plus the ability to correct misconception are important in increasing the likelihood of quality instruction. The Quality instruction index suggests that respondents have a surface level conceptual knowledge. These limited conceptual knowledge of the respondents affected their assessment. It was hypothesized that the Education for All (EFA) goal no. 6 of improving all aspects of the quality of education and ensuring excellence for 2015 cannot be achieved
