Leggere il mondo creando mondi: i mondi possibili nel fantasy
Get PDFThis paper – which has been developed within a dialogue with Simona Micali’s one, regarding possible worlds within science fiction – aims at investigating those narrative strategies engaged in the processes of world building and construction of meaning in fantasy. Within such a frame, all the typical mechanisms related to the act of reading and to the act of make-believe will be also taken into account. The analysis focuses onto Ende’s Neverending Story, which is interpreted through a confrontation both with Wolfgang Iser’s theory about the act of reading, considered as a phenomenological act, and with Tolkien’s primary fantasy model of The Lord of the Rings. Starting from these premises, the paper also suggests a possible theoretical model of textual cooperation reader-author within the specific literary genre of fantasy.L’intervento – pensato in dialogo con quello di Simona Micali a proposito dei mondi possibili nella science fiction – analizza le strategie narrative poste in atto a livello di costruzione del mondo e costruzione di significato attraverso i meccanismi tipici dell’atto di lettura e del make-believe in un genere specifico come il fantasy. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. No full textCet essai se propose d’étudier l’image de la foule en temps de guerre à certains moments clés essentiels de la littérature contemporaine. L’analyse se fonde sur la relation étroite entre la représentation de la foule et celle de la ville, telle qu’elle est perçue dans l’imaginaire littéraire à partir de la modernité. Le concept même de foule connaît dans le temps une profonde évolution, qui va de pair avec celle de l’image de la métropole. Ainsi, à la foule des individus qui traversent les grandes capitales du XIXe siècle, se substitue d’abord la masse des grands mouvements ouvriers puis, avec l’avènement de la grande guerre, la foule fantasmatique composée d’individus solitaires qui errent dans les espaces métropolitains rendus déserts par les nécessités de la guerre. La césure radicale provoquée par le premier conflit mondial se fait toujours plus profonde jusqu’à ce que la seconde guerre mondiale marque définitivement la fin des concepts traditionnels de foule et de métropole, préparant l’avènement de leur nouvelle représentation post-moderne. Dans ce contexte, l’expérience de trois auteurs italiens – Calvino, Fenoglio et Primo Levi, qui ont en commun leur double rôle d’écrivains et de témoins – s’avère particulièrement significative. Les cas de Calvino et de Fenoglio se révèlent assez semblables : pour tous deux, la guerre est d’abord la conclusion collective dénuée de sens de la propagande du régime et, dans un second temps, l’occasion de se racheter individuellement (à travers le choix de la résistance). Dans quelques œuvres (pour Calvino, le recueil de récits L’entrata in guerra et le roman de la résistance Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno et, pour Fenoglio, le roman Primavera di Bellezza en particulier), tous deux cherchent à comprendre les profondes transformations des comportements sociaux de la foule déterminées par les villes en guerre. Le cas exceptionnel de Primo Levi, témoin à Auschwitz des comportements de cette foule particulière que constituent les habitants du Lager, est différent mais encore plus significatif. Le camp de concentration peut ainsi être défini selon les propos de Marc Augé comme le premier vrai « non-lieu » de l’époque contemporaine, et l’analyse serrée du livre témoignage de Levi (Se questo è un uomo) met en lumière les processus de représentation d’une foule de « non-hommes » décrits avec une attitude manifeste de « narrateur anthropologue » (selon l’heureuse définition de Daniele del Giudice). Il s’agit d’une représentation paradoxale et inversée mais qui anticipe toutefois, à certains égards, certains traits caractéristiques de la métropole moderne, babélique et multi-ethnique, et de ses habitants
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
