ORIENTALISM REDUX: INCI EVINER’S HAREM PINAR ZARARSIZ (ART HISTORY) ABSTRACT This thesis examines the 2009 video Harem by Turkish artist Inci Eviner (b. 1956). Eviner’s work centralizes issues of gender in Turkish culture, the history of colonialism, and how historical location informs society at large. Eviner lives and works in Turkey, but exhibits internationally. Harem has been exhibited in Turkey, France, and England. Harem is based on a series of nineteenth-century Orientalist engravings by Antoine Ignace Melling, entitled Intérieur d\u27une partie du Harem du Grand-Seigneur (Interior of Part of the Harem of the Grand Signor) (1803-1819). Melling’s Harem du Grand-Seigneur was published in the Picturesque Voyage to Constantinople and the Shores of the Bosporus album (1805-1819) edited by Monsieur Treuttel and Monsieur Wurtz. In this thesis, I will discuss the significance of Eviner’s choice to base her work on Melling’s third interior drawing. By recreating Melling’s Harem du Grand-Seigneur in video, Eviner replaces his original figures with women performing tasks, many the antithesis of what audiences might expect to take place in a harem. In so doing, the artist attempts to expose Orientalism’s legacy within contemporary Turkish culture, and especially its impact on contemporary Turkish women’s identity. As such, Harem serves as a critique of Turkey’s contemporary identity crisis as well as Western hegemony, epitomized by Orientalism, in the canon of art history

Background: Patient education is integral to bariatric surgical programs. With increasing accessibility to the internet, patients now use online sources to obtain information, which raises concern about the reliability of content presented in these sources. This study aimed to evaluate online information sources that bariatric patients use and determine patients' perceived effectiveness and reliability concerning these sources. Methods: The study was conducted with 125 patients who had undergone bariatric surgery for the first time within the past 6 months. Data were obtained through an online survey form. Results: Most patients reported that they were informed by health care professionals, and mostly by physicians. The respondents reported that they mostly used Facebook (86%), and 74% indicated that they used internet applications because they trusted other patients' experiences. Although 82% of the participants were selective in terms of online sources to which they referred for information, 62% considered that social media could be used to obtain information. Conclusions: Although most patients were informed by health care professionals, patients mostly sought online information and trusted internet sources. Patients should be made aware of the importance of trustworthy information, and internet resources should be incorporated into the patient education process to provide reliable information for patients

Shear Force in Bolted Connection Due to Traffic and Temperature Loads in Hybrid Steel-FRP Bridges

As many bridges are reaching the end of their service life, researchers are searching for new solutions to extend the lifespan of those bridges. Fibre reinforce polymers (FRP) could be possible a solution for bridges with deck problems. Lightweight FRP decks can be installed quickly via bolted connectors on steel substructure. In general, shear force in the connector is not taken into account during the design of FRP decks because slip behaviour and interaction with steel substructure is unknown. This research connects to research at TU Delft on non-slip shear connectors for FRP decks. Aim of this paper is to quantify shear forces in bolted connectors due to traffic and temperature loads. The direction of webs, fibres in panel facings and the expansion coefficient of resin has been investigated to determine the influence of the FRP deck on the shear force in the connectors. To investigate the results of traffic loading and temperature loading on real bridges, a database of bridges in the Netherlands has been used. Results from the analyses offer an indication of the influence of the laminates on the shear force in the connectors and show shear force ranges that can occur in existing bridges.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Steel & Composite Structure

Feasibility of Bolted Connectors in Hybrid FRP-Steel Structures

    No full text
Due to the low weight and excellent durability of composite materials, Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) decks mounted on steel superstructures are becoming all the more common in engineering practice. Bolted joints are generally used to facilitate connections between an FRP deck and steel girders in road bridges. The connections are subjected to both high magnitude static forces as well as fatigue loading due to overpassing vehicles. With ever increasing traffic on both road and railway bridges, fatigue performance is of critical concern. Bolted FRP joints have been extensively researched in the past under static loading, but less is known about the fatigue and creep behaviour of such joints. Furthermore, little research exists on non-pultruded FRP profiles connected using bolted connections. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate connectors’ feasibility by means of static, fatigue and creep experiments on four different types of bolted joints comprising mechanical connectors and injection techniques. The study focuses on application in vacuum infused GFRP panels with integrated webs made of multi-directional laminates, connected to steel bridge superstructures. In addition, experimental results are validated by Finite Element Analyses (FEA). Based on the obtained results, the novel injected steel-reinforced resin (iSRR) connector developed at TU Delft shows promising potential in hybrid steel-FRP bridges where good fatigue endurance of the connection and local loads in FRP panel, are required.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Steel & Composite Structure

Halofuginone has a Beneficial Effect on Gentamicin-induced Acute Nephrotoxicity in Rats

    No full text
The aim of this study was to investigate the putative beneficial effect of halofuginone on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with gentamicin sulphate (GEN; 80 mg/kg) or saline intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 7 days. Halofuginone was administered (0.1 mg/kg/day; i.p.) following GEN or saline injections. Blood and urine samples were collected to measure the renal function tests. Kidneys were excised for histological evaluation and for the measurement of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and chemiluminescence (CL). Halofuginone treatment to animals with GEN-induced renal injury caused a significant decrease in serum blood urea nitrogen level and reduced the elevated MDA, GSH content, and MPO activity. It was also effective in reversing the elevated CL values of rats with GEN-induced nephrotoxicity and preserving renal morphology, as examined microscopically. In conclusion, halofuginone was beneficial in GEN-induced acute nephrotoxicity. The mechanism could be attributed, at least in part, to decreased tissue leukocyte infiltration and reactive metabolite production

Modelling the Bond of GFRP Bar and Concrete for the Thermo-mechanical Behaviour of RC Slabs

    No full text
Present study aims to develop a 3D thermo-mechanical numerical model to better understand the influence of elevated temperature on the bond between the GFRP bars and concrete in RC structural elements. The relevant constitutive thermal and mechanical parameters of the bond were calibrated using experimental measure-ments, including pull-out tests under different elevated temperatures. The accuracy of the numerical thermo-mechanical predictions was first confirmed by pull-out test simulation, then the modelling strategy was transferred to RC thin slabs. Good accordance of experimental and numerically predicted temperature fields was fol-lowed by the verification of the complete methodology through comparison of ex-perimental and numerical thermo-mechanical slabs’ response. The relevant labora-tory experimental measurements and observations confirmed the accuracy of the developed numerical modelling, emphasizing the importance of proper selection of material parameters and their temperature dependencies. This work contributes to the improvement of simulation strategies for GFRP RC structures in elevated tem-perature environments and tends to increase the confidence in adopting GFRP re-inforcement bars in concrete design

A simplified approach to evaluate retrofit effects on curved masonry structures

    No full text
Masonry vaulted structures are diffused all over the world, in many cases in historical and monumental buildings, often characterized by high seismic risk. For this reason their conservation should be investigated. Composite materials are usually used to retrofit different types of masonry and concrete buildings. The behaviour of masonry arches retrofitted at their intrados and/or extrados surfaces by means of externally bonded composite materials (FRP or FRCM) has been investigated. The load capacity estimate due to composite strengthening could be performed through finite element analyses. The numerical simulations provide important information about the mechanical behaviour of the masonry structures and on the composite-masonry interaction. However, such numerical analyses present often some drawbacks. For this reason it is useful to have simplified calculation methods to estimate capacity increase of masonry vaulted structures due to composite retrofit. Such simplified methods are the goal of this work and they consider linear and nonlinear behaviour of masonry. Validation of the proposed method is carried out by comparing predictions of the load capacity and failure mode with those obtained from shaking table experimental tests
