    PET imaging for lymph node dissection in prostate cancer

    The detection of neoplastic lymph nodal involvement in prostate cancer (PCa) patients has relevant therapeutic and prognostic significance, both in the clinical settings of primary staging and restaging. Lymph nodal dissection (LND) currently represents the gold standard for evaluating the presence of lymph nodal involvement. However, this procedure is invasive, associated with morbidity, and may fail in detecting all potential lymph nodal metastatic regions. Currently the criteria for lymph nodal detection using conventional imaging techniques mainly rely on morphological assessment with unsatisfactory diagnostic accuracy. Positron emission tomography (PET) represents a helpful imaging technique for a proper staging of lymph nodal status. The most investigated PET radiotracer is choline, although many others have been explored as guide for both primary and salvage LND, such as fluorodeoxyglucose, acetate, fluorocyclobutanecarboxylic acid and prostate-specific membrane antigen. In the present review, a comprehensive literature review addressing the role of PET for LND in PCa patients is reported, with the use of the above-mentioned radiotracers

Therefore the role of imaging techniques is very important for the correct management of these patients.     Effects of different feeding systems of Apuan Alps goat population on growth rate and puberty age

    Only 50-60% of Apuan Alps goat population, kept on pasture, reachs puberty within the first year of life. To increase this percentage a feeding trial was carried out. Twelve goats were divided into two groups homogeneous for birth weight (P: 2.38±0.12 kg; S: 2.38±0.11 kg). Goats of group P were fed mother's milk and supplemented with alfalfa hay and maize grain until the age of 90 days. Then they were kept on pasture at 500-1700m a.s.l. in Apuan Alps park. Goats of group S were kept indoor and fed replaced milk and supplemented with alfalfa hay and mixed feed (16.5% CP) until the age of 90 days. Then they were fed alfalfa hay and thesame mixed feed. All animals were weighed every 15 days until the end of the trial at 8 months of age. The data analysis showed a significant (P=0.017; SEM=1.46) final live weight differences between animals of group P (26.2 kg) and group S (32.2 kg). Average daily gain of group S (113 g/d) was significant higher (P<0.0001; SEM=7.1) than that of group P (97 g/d). Puberty age was reached only by 4 animals of group P (287±6.4 d) and by all animals of group S (246±9.4 d). All these animals were pregnant and gave birth except a subject of group P that aborted late. The trial showed a positive effect of intensive feeding on the number of animals reaching puberty during the first year of age

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    11C-or18F-Choline PET/CT for imaging evaluation of biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer

    Recurrence of prostate cancer is suspected when an increase in the prostate-specific antigen level is detected after radical treatment; the recurrence could be local relapse, distant relapse, or both. Differentiation between the two patterns of relapse is critical for choosing the proper treatment strategy. Choline PET/CT could be of help in discriminating patients with local, lymph node, and bone recurrences, thus having an impact on patient management

    Diagnostic accuracy of FDG PET/CT for clinical evaluation at the end of treatment of HL and NHL: a comparison of the Deauville Criteria (DC) and the International Harmonization Project Criteria (IHPC)

    Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy and prognostic value of FDG PET/CT for response assessment after treatment in patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) when using the Deauville Criteria (DC) and the International Harmonization Project Criteria (IHPC). Methods: This retrospective study included 101 patients (35 HL, 66 NHL) who underwent early restaging FDG PET/CT after treatment. Scans were evaluated using the IHPC and DC. Two thresholds of positivity for the DC were used: a score of at least 3 (DC3, i.e. scores 3 â 5) and a score of at least 4 (DC4, i.e. a score of 4 or 5). Accuracy was assessed using conventional diagnostic procedures, multidisciplinary team case notes, further PET/CT scans and/or follow-up. Progression-free survival and overall survival were computed using the Kaplan-Meier method. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify predictors of outcome. Results: Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy of FDG PET/CT for early restaging were, respectively, 92Â %, 87Â %, 74Â %, 92Â % and 86Â % using DC4, 97Â %, 76Â %, 64Â %, 98Â % and 84Â % using DC3, and 97Â %, 67Â %, 57Â %, 98Â % and 76Â % using the IHPC. FDG PET/CT positivity was associated with a worse cumulative survival rate over a 2-year period when using DC4 in comparison with the IHPC (20Â % vs. 49Â %; p < 0.05) and DC3 (47Â %; p < 0.05). Cox regression analysis showed different risks of progression in patients positive on FDG PET/CT using the IHPC, DC3 and DC4 (hazard ratios 1.57, 0.7 and 3.2, respectively). Conclusion: FDG PET/CT using DC4 showed higher diagnostic accuracy for HL and NHL than FDG PET/CT using either the IHPC or DC3, indicating its value in predicting clinical outcome after treatment

Finally, the role of11C-choline PET/CT in the prediction of survival in both castration-resistant prostate cancer patients and hormone-naà ̄ve patients is investigated

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
