Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
Analyses of pupils’ polygonal shape drawing strategy with respect to handwriting performance
Polygonal shape drawing tasks are commonly used in psychological, clinical and standard handwriting tests to evaluate children’s development. Early detection of physical/mental disorders within subjects therefore requires objective analysis of the drawing tasks. This analysis would help to identify specific rehabilitation needs and accurate detection of disorders. Herein, the aim is to determine the correlation between the performance of polygonal shape drawing and levels in handwriting performance. In the reported experimentation two groups of participants aged between 6 and 7 were studied. The first group was identified by educational experts as being below-average writers within their age group whilst the second group was age-matched controls of average and above. Subjects were required to draw an isosceles triangle within a novel computer-based framework founded on a pen-based graphic tablet capture device. Subsequently, a sequential feature vector containing performance values relating to the order in which they drew the triangle was extracted from tablet data and compared against one another when presented in constructional strategy models. Statistical analyses and automated classification were applied to sequences to infer handwriting level based on the triangle drawing strategy. From our experiments drawing strategies showed significant differences in drawing end-point position, number of strokes used, and the frequency of particular drawing strategies amongst average and below-average handwriting groups. Additionally, a support vector machine classifier was used to detect group membership based on the triangle drawing strategy. From this exemplar polygonal shape drawing study it is revealed that there are details in children’s drawing strategy which considerably differs in grouping based on handwriting performance
On some subclasses of m-fold symmetric analytic functions
AbstractWe introduce and study a new class Qk(α,β,m) of the functions f defined in the open unit disc and having the power series of the form f(z)=z+am+1zm+1+am+2zm+2+…,m=1,2,…. This class generalizes the concept of bounded Mocanu variation and contains several known classes of analytic functions such as those of bounded radius rotation and alpha-starlike functions. Integral representation, the arclength problem and some other interesting properties of these functions are studied
Effect of fuel particle size and blending ratio on syngas production and performance of co-gasification
Shortage of feedstock supply often happens in biomass gasification. Thus, the cogasification
of blended biomass is a potential option to maintain feedstock supply for
continuous gasification operations. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of
biomass blending ratio and biomass particle size on the syngas quality and performance
of the co-gasification process. The co-gasification of wood chips/coconut shells was
carried out in a downdraft gasifier at a 400 L/min airflow rate. The biomass blending ratio
varies at 80/20, 50/50 and 20/80 (w/w) with biomass particle sizes of 5-10, 10-25 and 25-
50 mm. The results show that small particle size favours gas composition. The highest H2
(10.91%), CO (25.60%), and CH4 (2.79%) levels were obtained from the 5-10 mm
particle size at 80/20, 50/50, and 20/80 blending ratios, respectively. Higher HHV and
gas yield were obtained at the 20/80 blending ratio with the 5-10 and 10-25 mm particle
sizes, respectively. Cold gas efficiency varies from 54.37 to 65.52%. The trend shows
that at smaller particle sizes, cold gas efficiency is higher, while in most cases, carbon
conversion efficiency was found to be more than 90% during co-gasification. The syngas
quality and performance of co-gasification were more sensitive to biomass particle size
as compared to the blending ratio
