Print journal holdings in two Canadian consortial projects
Get PDFThe Canadian university library members of two consortial e-journal arrangements were surveyed to determine how many of the corresponding print journals had been cancelled as a result of participation in the online packages. The survey results indicated that the number of current print subscriptions held by the libraries had notably decreased. This paper discusses this loss of print and presents two options, with examples, for dealing with the archiving of print journals, Distributed Print Archiving and Back-up Repositories. The question of whether anything really needs to be done is also addressed
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

E-print archives posted to top most six physics-cross-listed research categories besides physics (5390) are: Condensed matter (754), Quantum physics (279), Astrophysics (222), Chemical physics (129), High energy physics - Phenomenology (118), and High energy physics-Theory (100). Prominent contributors are B.G. Sidharth (India), V.V. Flambaum (Australia), Antonina N. Fedorova (Russia), and Michael G. Zeitlin (Russia). Most preferred journals for rechannelising e-print archives are Physical Review Letters, Physical Review A, Physical Review E, Nuclear Instruments and Methods A, and Journal of Chemical Physics

Get PDFThe paper is based upon a study on the citations in the Science Citation Index (1992-2002) to the e-print archives of Los Alamos National Laboratory on the subject categories 'nucl-th' (nuclear theory) and 'nucl-ex' (nuclear experiment). The trend of growth of e-print archives and citing pattern of e-print archives are studied. The paper has also identified the highly cited e-print archives and the highly citing journals. The study shows the growing use of e-print archives as the knowledge-generating system for fast communication of results and ideas, and their quick use

Due to smaller library budgets, users’ preference of electronic resources, and publishers’ emphasis on electronic-based full-text publishing, print serials are no longer the preferred accessible format. Many libraries are increasing their purchasing of electronic serial resources and reducing their print versions. This has created an impact on library workflows. Squaring the Circle: Towards an Integrated Print and Digital Journal Preservation Strategy
Get PDFThis paper examines preservation strategies for both print and electronic scholarly journals focusing on strategic policy considerations relevant to these tasks. Developments in both areas of preservation are examined in their historical context. Recent promising developments for both print and digital preservation are discussed with an eye to integrating both activities. Four key pillars are outlined to sketch the framework for an integrated journal preservation strategy: legal agreements, archiving infrastructure, holdings registry and consortia leadership. Specific focus is given to the rationale for library consortia leadership in the North American context. The benefits of an integrated print and digital preservation strategy are then analyzed with some conclusions drawn and recommendations for future areas of research
