    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Identifying water-responsive and drought-tolerant chickpea genotypes

    This study quantifies the responses of drought-tolerant genotypes of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) to water availability under three irrigation regimes: rainfed (T1), 30% of full supplemental irrigation (T2), and full supplemental irrigation (T3). Sixteen genotypes of chickpea were tested in a split-plot arrangement in a randomised complete block design with three replications. Drought-resistance score (DRS), days to 50% flowering, plant height, days to maturity (DTM), grain yield (GY), biological yield (BY), 100-seed weight, average number of pods per plant (PoN), and average number of seeds per plant (SN) were measured. ANOVA indicated significant differences between treatments, years, and genotypes. Two genotypes, FLIP03-145C and ILC588, showed high drought tolerance accompanied by lower DTM, and they produced the highest GY (9.3 g plant(-1)). Strong and significant (P < 0.001) correlations were observed between GY and BY (0.94), SN (0.93), and PoN (0.94). The GY, BY, SN, and PoN traits were significantly (P < 0.001) correlated with DRS (-0.51 to -0.58). Ten genotypes performed better under T2 than T3, indicating a limitation in response to more water availability. Three genotypes (FLIP03-145C, ILC3182, and ILC588) are recommended for the national programs of Mediterranean countries as being drought-tolerant and especially responsive to water

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Demand-driven breeding of food legumes for plant-nutrient relations in the tropics and the sub-tropics: serving the farmers; not the crops!

    A number of improved cultivars of food legume crops have been developed and released in the tropics and the sub-tropics. Most of these cultivars have been developed through conventional breeding approaches based on the development of crop varieties under optimum soil fertility levels. Nevertheless, it is hardly possible to say that the varietal provisions made by the past approach have been readily accepted, and properly utilized to boost productivity of food legumes grown by resource-poor farmers. The approach itself did not fully appreciate the actual circumstances of the resource-poor farmers where marginal production systems prevail and the poorest farmers could not afford to use cultivars developed under optimum soil fertility level. Therefore, the limitations and strategic implications of past experiences made to develop crop cultivars need to be analyzed in order to formulate better strategies and approaches in the future. The main purpose of this article is to review the efforts made, the technical difficulties associated with the genetic improvement in food legumes as related to plant-nutrient relations, causes of limited breeding success and thereby draw lessons useful to designing future breeding strategies. The scope of nutrient deficiency stress and the approaches to breeding for plant-nutrient relations are discussed and the need for refining the approach and better targeting of the breeding methodologies suggested

    Phenotypic and Molecular Characterization of Wheat for Slow Rusting Resistance against Puccinia striiformis Westend. f.sp. tritici

    Race-specific resistance of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to yellow rust caused by Puccinia striiformis Westend. f.sp. tritici is often short-lived. Slow-rusting resistance has been reported to be a more durable type of resistance. A set of sixteen bread wheat varieties along with a susceptible control Morocco was tested during 2004–05 to 2006–07 in field plots at Peshawar (Pakistan) to identify slow rusting genotypes through epidemiological variables including final rust severity (FRS), apparent infection rate (r), area under disease progress curve (AUDPC), average coefficients of infection (ACI) and leaf tip necrosis (LTN). Epidemiological parameters of resistance were significantly (P < 0.01) different for years/varieties in three seasons, while variety × year interactions remained non-significant. Sequence tagged site (STS) marker, csLV34 analyses revealed that cultivars Faisalabad-83, Bahawalpur-95, Suleman-96, Punjab-96, Bakhtawar-93, Faisalabad-85, Shahkar-95 and Kohsar-95 possessed Yr18 linked allele. Faisalabad-83, Bahawalpur-95, Suleman-96, Punjab-96, Bakhtawar-93 and Faisalabad-85 were relatively more stable over 3-years where FRS, AUDPC and r values reduced by 80, 84 and 70% respectively compared to control Morocco. These six varieties therefore could be exploited for the deployment of Yr18 in breeding for slow rusting in wheat. Both FRS and ACI are suitable parameters for phenotypic selection

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Multi-environment QTL analyses for drought-related traits in a recombinant inbred population of chickpea (Cicer arientinum L.)

    A recombinant inbred line (RIL) population, comprising 181 lines derived from ILC588 × ILC3279, was evaluated in 10 environments across three locations with different moisture gradients. A drought resistance score (DRS) and three phenology traits—plant height (PLHT), days to flowering (DFLR), and days to maturity (MAT)—were recorded along with seven yield-related traits—grain yield (GY), biological yield (BY), harvest index (HI), the number of pods/3 plants (Pod), percentage of empty pods (%Epod), 100 seed weight (100 sw), and seed number/3 plants (SN). Two RILs (152, 162) showed the best GYs and DRSs under stressed and non-stressed environments. The quantitative trait loci (QTLs) analyses detected 93 significant QTLs (LOD ≥ 2.0) across the genome × environment interactions. The highest phenotypic variation (>24 %) was explained by the QTLDFLR in Terbol-11. Four common possible pleiotropic QTLs on LG3 and LG4 were identified as associated with DFLR, DRS, GY, MAT, HI, SN, and Pod. No significant epistatic interactions were found between these QTLs and the other markers. However, the QTL for DRS was detected as a conserved QTL in three late planting environments. The markers H6C-07 (on LG3) and H5G01 (on LG4) were associated with QTLs for many traits in all environments studied except two. The allele ‘A’ of marker H6C07 (from the tolerant parent ILC588) explained 80 % of the yield increase under late planting and 29.8 % of that under dry environments. Concentrating on LG3 and LG4 in molecular breeding programs for drought could speed up improvement for these traits
