Moving world, moving voices: a discussion with Daljit Nagra
© The Author(s) 2020. This interview explores a range of both emergent and persistent areas of interest in the work of Daljit Nagra. Nagra’s two latest books — Ramayana (2013) and British Museum (2017) — represent explorations of his interests in both “rootedness” — what it means to be connected or grounded in a cultural environment — and “route-edness” — what it means for cultures to travel and the impact of cultural journeying (Clifford, 1997). In both books he considers how cultures — both as individual and intertwined entities — in complex ways solidify and mutate; how they remain static and move. In this interview he explores his own shifting, layered, and sometimes uncomfortable relationship with diverse cultures, considering the extent to which and the means by which cultures “translate”. Underlining the inevitable clashes and dislocation such processes necessitate, via pluralism he identifies an essential desire for the meaningful connection of diverse cultures. Like the British Museum of the title of his most recent work, he sees the importance of his poetry as a project in human connectivity, asserting creative achievement, resilience, and value. In exploring these ideas, Nagra discusses the ways in which his work connects both to Indian culture in transition and translation and to canonical English Literature. This interview was conducted in Uxbridge, West London on 6 December 2018

Prematurely terminated slug tests
A solution of the well response to a prematurely terminated slug test (PTST) is presented. The advantages of a PTST over conventional slug tests are discussed. A systematized procedure of a PTST is proposed, where a slug test is terminated in the midpoint of the flow point, and the subsequent shut-in data is recorded and analyzed. This method requires a downhole shut-in device and a pressure transducer, which is no more than the conventional deep-well slug testing. As opposed to slug tests, which are ineffective when a skin is present, more accurate estimate of formation permeability can be made using a PTST. Premature termination also shortens the test duration considerably. Because in most cases no more information is gained by completing a slug test to the end, the author recommends that conventional slug tests be replaced by the premature termination technique. Senate Reform in Canada: The Case for an Elected Senate
Senate reform is an issue that has been a topic of discussion and debate in Canada’s political sphere for almost as long as Canada has existed as a country. The Canadian Senate is an institution formed at the time of Confederation, and its structure, role and, composition embody the spirit of compromise that laid the foundation for Canada to come into existence. Unfortunately, the Senate that was established a century and half ago is now an institution that has failed to evolve in order to adequately serve the needs of Canada and its modern day political reality. This research paper will explore the role of the Senate and the reasoning for its creation. In addition, this paper will argue in favour of Senate reform and it will examine the advantages for Canada that establishing an Upper House of Parliament that is elected, equal, and effective may have.Peer reviewedstudent peer-reviewed journal articlefinal article publishe

Arne Sucksdorff professor incômodo no Brasil
This article discusses the film course by Swedish filmmaker Arne Sucksdorff between November 1962 and March 1963 in Rio de Janeiro, which was an invitation from UNESCO and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil. This experience involved the first Nagra equipment to capture direct sound to arrive in Brazil, and the strained relations between an award-winning foreign master, author of a cinema difficult to classify, and his young engaged students that contributed to the cinema to come.Cet article présente le cours de cinéma dispensé par le cinéaste suédois Arne Sucksdorffentre novembre 1962 etmars 1963à Rio de Janeiro, à l’invitation de l’UNESCO et du ministère brésilien des Affaires étrangères. Development of a business tool to evaluate the Northern Health Connections program
Organization and program self-assessments are important tools for enabling companies to learn and improve. Much like an annual health physical, they help managers better understand both what is working well and what areas require attention. Self-assessments also are effective for communicating priorities to various stakeholders and for monitoring progress over time, and their greatest value is their ability to enable organizations to improve their performance and produce positive results. Self-assessment tools are well evaluated in the literature, and Northern Health -- as an organization striving for excellence -- can make good use of them to meet the needs of it Northern Health Connections patient transportation program. Ideally, tools would already exist that can be easily modified to suit the program's needs however, because Northern Health Connections is a unique, multi-faceted program, it needs a new tool developed using existing self-assessment frameworks. This project proposes a tool consisting of a Route Evaluation Flow Chart (REFC) and accompanying questionnaire. The tool will assist managers at Northern Health Connections in the essential task of allocating transportation resources for moving patients to and from northern British Columbia's medical facilities. In this paper, I will present an overview of the relevant literature and then discuss the tool's conceptualization, design, and development. Finally, I will recommend that Northern Health Connections integrate the REFC tool into their daily operations. The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b165171
Based on the hypothesis of a progressive move of cinematographic devices toward the electric paradigm, the author examines the impact of synchronous recording in film and video on conceptions of audio-visual technique. Drawing on a range of examples taken primarily from the NFB fonds, this article describes the difficulties tied to obtaining reliable sound/image synchronization on a film strip, and provides an analysis of the main aesthetic differences between the media of film stock and magnetic tape. The technical coupling of image and sound, (the French term asservissement literally means enslavement) lends the video medium an “ontological” characteristic; thus, desynchronization becomes an aesthetic choice which has consequences for the perception of image/sound temporality
