Methodological problems of using questions in foreign language teaching
The author discusses the status and role of questions in foreign language teaching. Although they are essential tools of managing the learning process, the topic does not enjoy much interest in the methodological literature. Therefore it seems advisable to discuss the methodological problems of foreign language teaching in a broader context including both the activation of learners and teachers with questions and application of questions while working with a foreign language textThe author discusses the status and role of questions in foreign language teaching. Schwierigkeiten im Gebrauch der deutschen Unterrichtssprache
A very important problem for the foreign language teacher and learner is: how to use the foreign language structures correctly not only as paradigms but also as please, thank, question, aunswer or in other speech acts. The author thinks that the teacher should have at hislher disposal a full repertoire of such classroom phrases and be able to use them in all situations. Further he gives the semantic and structural description of some most often used German sentences contrasted with their Polish and English equivalents to eliminate the interlingual interference
Wpływ streszczania tekstów na rozwój wybranych sprawności w języku angielskim
The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to analyse the influence of systematic summarisation of texts, that were selected from regular coursebooks to teach English as a foreign language, on the development of reading and writing skills in English. The dissertation starts with a short review of definitions of summary which are
followed by a presentation of various terms close in meaning to summary taken both from Polish and English literature. Subseąuently, the formal features of summary have been gathered, systematised and discussed: length, fidelity and distance between a summary and a source text. Fidelity has been interpreted in the context
of four subcategories: selectiveness, ordering of information, paraphrasing and copying, and adding extra elements to a summary. The chapter ends with the extended defmition of summary formulated on the basis of the discussed features followed by the examination of parameters which influence the ąuality of written summaries. The second chapter presents a cognitive aspect of a summarisation process.
Kintsch and van Dijk (1978) created a model of text comprehension and summarisation which is based on the concepts of microstructure and macrostructure. The former corresponds to all the information present in a discourse, the latter constitutes a gist of a discourse. The process of summarisation is viewed as a transition from microlevel to macrolevel by means of three basie cognitive macrorules: deletion, generalisation and
construction. These macrooperations vary in their cognitive difficulty, and the construction has been ąualified as the most demanding cognitive operation. The Kintsch and van Dijk’s model is not the only theory which attempts to explain the process of summarisation. Rumelhart formulated his model on the basis of comprehension schemata consisting of many levels which can be presented in a graphic form. The more advanced level of a discourse is investigated, the more details are released. For this reason summaries should be built upon the starting levels of graphic representations of schemata. The last theory discussed in the chapter is Sherrard’s
topographical model of summarising75. The chapter ends with a cognitive analysis of how summary writing influences a memorisation process. The third chapter investigates the issue of summarisation teaching. It starts with the systematic presentation of summary writing techniąues which were applied in different types of research on summarisation. Next, different approaches to summarisation teaching have been analysed together with various methods of summary assessment. The next chapter’s aim is to present the selected aspects of research on summarising. The selected experiments have been grouped under the following topics:
strategies used by children, teenagers and adults; summarising in LI and L2; the influence of L2 proficiency on summary writing. The analysis of research outeomes shows that summary strategies use develops with age. The exception to this statement is construction which is dependent on cognitive development and successfully used by persons who are engaged in writing and reading professionally e.g. academic stuff. The research area focusing on comparison of summarisation in LI and L2 shows two tendencies. The first one stresses the impact of L2 deficit on summarising in L2 which results in poorer ąuality of summaries written in L2 than those constructed in LI. The second one focuses on similarities between summary writing in LI and L2 proving
that the processes underlying summarising are independent of any language. The investigation of the influence of L2 proficiency on summary writing shows that it is not a dominant parameter which guarantees high ąuality of summaries. It has been proved that knowledge and reading/writing experience mainly determine
summarisation effects. Students on the intermediate level can produce better summaries than proficient students provided that they skilfully use appropriate summarisation strategies and are able to differentiate between important and not important information in a text.Chapter 5 starts the description of empirical research which has been organised to measure the influence of summarising on reading and writing in English as a foreign
language. The experiment was conducted at Akademia Techniczno-Humanistyczna in Bielsko-Biała and involved 83 students of the first year of the International Relations faculty. Two groups were involved in the research. An experimental group attended an English language course which was based on written summarising of texts. A control group attended the course which was based on the same texts but they were followed by
practise based on activities suggested by a coursebook they were taken from. The research showed that summarisation develops comprehension ability efficiently. After 6 months of summary writing students from the experimental group improved their scores in text comprehension, measured by FCE test, by 22.5% and a
control group only by 4.6%. A positive influence of summarising was also observed in the case of writing. It
was observed that argumentative essays produced by the experimental group were more correct in terms of grammar and lexis than the ones written by the control group. In addition students from experimental group had no problems with verbalising their thoughts in English which resulted in few semantic errors. The control group made numerous semantic errors which resulted in many non-comprehensible parts of their essays. Moreover, summarising helped students to use diversified vocabulary in an efficient way. Summing up, the research proved that summary writing not only develops successful text comprehension but it is also a very efficient means to teach lexis and grammar. The dissertation finishes with an attempt to explain the efficiency of summarising in the context of foreign language teaching. One of the theories which accounts for the success of summary writing is Craik and Lockhart’s theory of deep Processing. In order to summarise the text its contents need to be processed on deep levels. This is connected with a deep cognitive analysis which results in better
memorising of summarised contents and vocabulary which represents the contents. Other factors responsible for efficiency of a language course based on text summarising are as follows: data organization which due to ACT Theory helps to memorise the data, constructing macrostructure of a discourse which results in its durable
memorisation, analysing the structure of a text and discovering its sense which are essential for
successful text comprehension, high activity of a summariser that is a factor which influences durability and
faithfulness of data storage, a productive way of grammar and vocabulary practise
Wpływ pisania kreatywnego na rozwój sprawności dialogowych w języku angielskim
The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the influence of creative writing on linguistic competence in English through case studies of two related projects. The first case study involved a group of undergraduate students of International Relations. A number of their classes of English were chosen to carry out creative writing tasks. The primary interest was to compare creative texts that were not inspired by art stimulus (AS-) and those that were
inspired by visual art stimulus, a picture (AS+). The second case study involved a group of undergraduate students of English Philology who had chosen the culture specialization.
We devoted a part of their writing classes to creative writing tasks. Our main goal was to compare the influence of art stimuli of three types: verbal stimuli (works of literature, mainly poetry), visual stimuli (pictures) and sound stimuli (music). In the first chapter of the dissertation the variety of creative writing definitions is discussed. The chapter also specifies the aspects of creative writing and its fundamental elements: mystery and suspense. The most important facts from the history of creative writing teaching are presented and interpreted.
The second chapter addresses the problem of creativity as a popular but at the same time vague concept. A number of definitions of creativity are introduced and analysed. The problem of the two translation possibilities of the word creativity into Polish is dealt with. The difference between the two Polish terms (twórczość i kreatywność) is discussed. The aim of the next chapter is to present a number of possible methods of applying
art to foreign language acquisition. Not only the contemporary ideas are displayed here but also
the history of using art in foreign language teaching and learning is traced.
Research methods of the related projects are described at length in the forth chapter. The quality research was chosen as the dominant one. The decision is justified by the essence of research problem. The key ideas are enumerated and explained. The next two chapters belong to the empirical part of the dissertation. The aim of the fifth chapter is to present the purposes, hypotheses, tasks and activities of the first project as well as its results. The main goal is to compare the texts written without any art stimuli and preparation stage, marked as AS- (minus Art Stimulus) with texts written with visual stimuli and multi-tasked preparation stage (AS+). The results of the projects are many-sided and they are mainly connected with elements of fiction, verbs and adjectives in students’ texts, their lexical frequency profile as well as aphoristic style. The goal of the second case study is to compare the texts composed under the influence of various art stimuli: verbal, visual and sound stimuli. The results of the second project embrace many aspects, including: elements of fiction, verbs and adjectives
in students’ texts, their lexical profile. The texts are also interpreted and analyzed from the aesthetic point of view. The influence of the possibility of free choice between stimuli on learners’ motivation is explored.
The dissertation ends with chapter seven in which the results of the two projects are summarized and reviewed. The conclusions are drawn and the areas for future research connected with the two projects are outlined
Środki językowe do werbalizacji statystycznych przedstawień graficznych w jezyku polskim i niemieckim
Celem niniejszej pracy była analiza wypowiedzeń w języku polskim i niemieckim, służących do werbalizacji statystycznych przedstawień graficznych w formie tablic i wykresów.
Rozwijanie względnie redukowanie struktury VP wynika ponadto z leksykalnej realizacji bazy werbalnej w obu językach.
Analiza konfrontatywna wypowiedzeń, służących do werbalizacji typów wykresów w pozostałych funkcjach komunikacyjnych, a także analiza tych wypowiedzeń, formułowanych w języku mówionym, stanowiłyby interesujący przedmiot dalszych badań językoznawczych.
Testowanie sprawności receptywnych w standaryzowanych testach języka angielskiego i niemieckiego : próba analizy porównawczej
According to the psycholinguistic theory, reading and listening comprehension are active processes of seeking and creating a text meaning which take part in a reader’s and a listener’s cognitive systems, and involve different types of knowledge. The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to examine if and to what extent this theoretically and empirically grounded definition is reflected in teaching and testing of receptive skills. Furthermore, the thesis presents the issue of measuring comprehension in standardized language tests. Chapter One opens with a review of past and current psycholinguistic theories of comprehension. Reading and listening are presented as multilevel text processes which involve inferring and anticipating, and which are determined by schemas, memory and attention. The project also presents the differences between the auditory and the written texts
comprehension, both in a native and a foreign language. The chapter ends with a list of practical implications for testing receptive skills. Chapter Two aims to indicate some important issues with regards to evaluation of
reading and listening comprehension skills. It begins with the presentation of qualities of language tests, followed by the discussion of possibilities and limitations of testing comprehension abilities. Next, various testing factors are presented which may affect the comprehension process and its outcome in a testing situation.
Chapter Third investigates the aims of developing and assessing receptive skills enumerated in a variety of important Polish and German language documents such as; Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, secondary school curricula, testing standards and teaching programs. Based on the fourth-level concept of comprehension which includes; 1) decoding, 2) understanding of explicitly stated
information, 3) understanding of implicitly stated information, 4) critical understanding –
evaluation, the analysis shows significant qualitative and quantitative differences between them and considerable lacks in their content. A great number of analyzed aims are not based on any psycholinguistics theory and do not provide any information about the achieved level (degree) of comprehension.
The following major part of the dissertation (Chapter Four and Five) explores testing constructs and techniques on the basis of a broad spectrum of reading and listening tests. Chapter Four presents tests developed within such research projects and programmes as PISA, PIRLS, DESI, French and English as the first foreign language at the lower secondary level, run by Institute for Educational Progress in Berlin. In the analyzed reading and listening constructs, comprehension is perceived as a complex process of graded depth.
Native-language reading tests (PISA, PIRLS, and DESI) assess four-level comprehension consisting of interpretation and evaluation of the text, whilst testing receptive skills in a foreign language is reduced to three levels of comprehension. The analysis of certificate tests in English and German on the B1-B2 level in
Chapter Five reveals that tests in English measure a broader range of skills using more varied
testing methods than equivalent tests in German. The third level of comprehension, i.e. interpretation is tested only to a certain degree, depending on the test (English/German) and its level (B1/B2), whereas evaluation is not tested at all. Chapter Six is devoted to a more detailed analysis of Polish school leaving reading
and listening tests in English and German (2011), followed by the analysis of school leaving tests in English from the Thuringia and the Bavaria regions in Chapter Seven. It includes texts, test items and test methods, as well as recorded speech. The most important conclusions drawn from the analysis presented in the last two
chapters are as follows:
– Polish school leaving tests measuring receptive skills in English and German lack in
construct and curricular validity.
– There are significant qualitative differences between Polish school leaving tests in
English and in German. Many of the examined reading and listening test items in
German are wrongly constructed and some texts have been unskillfully adapted.
– In Polish tests, close tasks are used exclusively, which in many cases demand only
localization and recognition of the information, whereas the analyzed German tests
include a variety of different tasks. Applied open techniques of testing allow
a learner to present their own product of comprehension, such as text interpretation
and their personal opinions.
– Polish school leaving tests focus on the lowest levels of comprehension: decoding and understanding of explicitly stated information. None of the interpretation skills mentioned in the Polish examinations standards is tested. The reading tests from Thuringia and Bavaria measure full comprehension involving interpretation and
evaluation of the text. Listening tests, however, evaluate only two (Thuringia) or three levels of comprehension (Bavaria). The recordings used at the Polish school leaving examination present unnatural
sounding speech resembling written rather than spoken language, whereas in Thuringia and Bavaria learners listen to more realistic, spoken language. The requirements of Polish school leaving tests are evidently decreased in relation to the real needs and abilities of the learners. The dissertation ends with a list of conclusions, proposals and demands which could improve validity und usefulness of the Polish school leaving tests in reading and listening, and whose implementation seems to be necessary in the near future
Podczas opisywania typów i przyczyn nieporozumień zachodzących pomiędzy polskimi i niemieckimi partnerami biznesowymi wykorzystano prace znanych badaczy, m.in.: Edwarda Halla, Richarda Gestelanda, Fonsa Trompenaarsa / Charlsa Hampden-Turnera, Geerta Hofstede czy też Sylvii Schroll-Machl. Dotyczą one różnych zagadnień, np. sposobu prowadzenia negocjacji, podejścia do czasu, relacji handlowych, okazywania szacunku itp.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
a. Meine Güte, bist du dünn geworden!
b. Die ist aber alt!
c. Was wird da für ein Unsinn erzählt!
d. Junge, wie die Zeit vergeht!
e. Wen die nicht kennt!
Dein Deutsch).
Exklamationen auftreten
