Сопоставительный анализ переводов фразеологических единиц в художественном тексте (на материале романа Ф.С. Фицджеральда "Великий Гэтсби")
The matter under research is linguistic and and author phraseologists used by F. Scott Fitzgerald in his novel The Great Gatsby and variants of their translation to the Russian language. Vered analyzes the problems that may arise in the process of translation and use of phraseological units in a literary text. The researcher also solves the problem of what would be the best way to preserve the form and contents of an an original established expression when the expression is transferred to another socio-cultural environment. Vered focuses on translation strategies and the method of semantic 'adaptation' of phraseological units taking into account their pragmatic and aesthetic orientation. The main research methods used by the author of the article include contrast analysis of phraseological units in the English and Russian languages. To specify the degree of semantic difference between conditionally equivalent units, the researcher has used the method of dictionary definition as well as contextual analysis that allows to discover functional features of phraseological units in a literary work. The novelty of the research is caused, on the one hand, by insufficient degree of development of expressive means translation and, on the other hand, by the need to study peculiarities of this category comparing Russian and English versions of a literary text. The choice of translation strategies depend on the degree of semantic contiguousness of components that constitute a phraseological unit as well as the nature of figurality of a particular language unit determined by culture and national peculiarities.Предметом исследования являются языковые и авторские фразеологизмы, используемые Ф.С. Фицджеральдом в романе «Великий Гэтсби», и варианты их интерпретации в русских переводах. Рассматриваются проблемы перевода и функционирования фразеологических единиц в художественном тексте. Решается вопрос об оптимальном сохранении формы и содержания оригинального устойчивого выражения при его переносе в иную социокультурную среду. Особое внимание уделяется стратегиям перевода и приему семантической «адаптации» английских фразеологических единиц с учетом их прагматической и эстетической направленности. Основным методом исследования служит контрастивный анализ фразеологических единиц английского и русского языков. Для уточнения степени семантического расхождения условно эквивалентных единиц используется метод словарной дефиниции, а также контекстуальный анализ, позволяющий выявить функциональные особенности фразеологизмов в художественном произведении. Новизна исследования обусловлена, с одной стороны, невысоким уровнем разработанности проблем перевода образных средств выразительности, с другой, - необходимостью изучения особенностей данной категории в сопоставлении русского и английского языков в рамках художественного текста. Выбор стратегии перевода зависит от степени семантической слитности компонентов, входящих в состав фразеологической единицы, а также от характера образности, детерминированной культурой и заложенной народом в ту или языковую единицу
Travelling Images, Lives on Location: Cinematographers in the Film Industry
This chapter uses narratives from feature film cinematographers taken from a larger body of ethnographic research conducted by the author. It examines the logistical challenges, personal identifications and professional expectations that characterise the lives of highly mobile feature film cinematographers.
Interviews were conducted at Camerimage International Festival of the Art of Cinematography, Łódz, Poland, over a four-year period. The researcher trained in this discipline herself and the chapter is part of ongoing research into the matrix of agency and practice in the lives of cinematographers, who engage in creative collaborative work in the film industry, which has specific power, historical and technological dynamics
A Natural-Worker Leaves the Colonial Visual Archive: The Art of Vered Nissim
The colonial visual archive has occupied in recent decades the work of scholars and artists from indigenous and racial minority communities, who revealed it as a major apparatus of historical meta-narratives. This article aims at pushing forward this preoccupation by revealing an additional scene: the art of Mizrahi women, descendants of Jewish communities of Arab and Muslim countries. Relying on a visual culture approach and focusing on an analysis of artworks by Mizrahi artist Vered Nissim, as well as on photographs of Mizrahi women, fund in Zionist archives, I demonstrate how Nissim’s work challenges the racial category of Mizrahi women as “natural workers”, constructed in the Zionist historical meta-narrative. Nissim does so by re-enacting the category’s paradigmatic visual image—the Mizrahi women cleaning worker—in a different way, visually and discursively. Body, voice, and visual image, three instances of the subjectivity of Mizrahi women cleaning workers that were separated, shaped, and mediated through Zionist colonial visual archives unite in Nissim’s work when embodied by a real Mizrahi woman cleaning worker: her mother, Esther Nissim. By casting her mother to play herself over the past twenty years, Nissim creates political conditions for the appearance of her mother as the author of her own history as she orally, bodily, and visually writes it in front of her daughter’s camera. Thus, Nissim joins a transnational phenomenon of global south artists who create political conditions enabling the self-imaging of colonized peoples, empowering the reading of colonial imagery and the historical meta-narratives attached to it through their situated knowledge and lived experience and, thus, constructing a counter history communicated visually
Dissertation Abstract:Learning High Precision Lexical Inferences
The fundamental goal of natural language processing is to build models capable of human-level understanding of natural language. One of the obstacles to building such models is lexical variability , i.e. the ability to express the same meaning in various ways. Existing text representations excel at capturing relatedness (e.g. blue / red ), but they lack the fine-grained distinction of the specific semantic relation between a pair of words. This article is a summary of a Ph.D. dissertation submitted to Bar-Ilan University in 2019, under the supervision of Professor Ido Dagan of the Computer Science Department. The dissertation explored methods for recognizing and extracting semantic relationships between concepts ( cat is a type of animal ), the constituents of noun compounds (baby oil is oil for babies), and verbal phrases (‘X died at Y’ means the same as ‘X lived until Y’ in certain contexts). The proposed models outperform highly competitive baselines and improve the state-of-the-art in several benchmarks. The dissertation concludes in discussing two challenges in the way of human-level language understanding: developing more accurate text representations and learning to read between the lines

СИМВОЛИКА И ФУНКЦИИ ЦВЕТООБОЗНАЧЕНИЙ В РОМАНЕ Ф.С. ФИЦДЖЕРАЛЬДА "ВЕЛИКИЙ ГЭТСБИ"
The article discusses the symbolism of color lexical units that form the semantic and emotional dominant of the novel The Great Gatsby by F.S. Fitzgerald. It is found out that there are five basic colors in the novel: yellow, gold, blue, green and gray. The article demonstrates how the symbolic meanings are molded from the direct meanings of colors. The use of symbols helps the author to represent ideas and deep concepts of the novel.В статье рассматривается символика цветообозначений, образующих смысловую и эмоциональную доминанту романа Ф.С. Фицджеральда «Великий Гэтсби». Установлено, что в художественной ткани произведения преобладают пять цветов: желтый, золотой, голубой, зеленый, серый. В статье показано, как над прямыми вещественными значениями цветов надстраиваются вторичные символические смыслы, служащие инструментом для раскрытия художественного мироощущения писателя
