The Revival of Thai Traditional Medicine and the Promotion of Thai Massage:The Reaction of Villagers in Northern Thailand
この論文は国立情報学研究所の学術雑誌公開支援事業により電子化されました。Recently, the Government of Thailand has been promoting "Thai Massage" as a therapy within the official category of "Thai Traditional Medicine." This promotional campaign contributes to both the medicalization of Thai society and the ideological reproduction of the Thai nation-state, as "Thai Traditional Medicine" !and "Thai Massage"" is being constructed according to national standards based on both "royal tradition" and biomedicine, and as these standards are being spread throughout the country and applied by those in the medical professions. This paper describes the experience of a village in Northern Thailand and examines the reactions of the villagers to these developments. Inthis region, the legitimacy of "Thai Massage" is being created within the activities of a project promoting local "folk medicine." However, "Thai Massage" does not suit the villagers' way of life well because it clashes with their sense of values, body techniques, and etiology of disease; it also disrupts their social relationships. When they do adopt "Thai Massage, " the villagers modify it to better fit the context of the village. Even within this project, in some situations, local knowledge can be revalued. When confronted with power, local villagers recognize authority constructed at a national level only within a specific context and within limited modes of practice

The efficacy and the sensory experience of magic: Narratives and practices in a rural village, hospital and school in northern Thailand
This paper examines narratives and practices in a rural village, hospital and school in northern Thailand to explore the role of sensory experience in the relations between, and influences of, various measures of the efficacy of magic. Sensory experience, including the visualization of 'poison', a cause of illness, makes the efficacy of magic persuasive. As some events demonstrate, however, the uncertain nature of invisible beings also sometimes engenders fear. Discourses from medical professionals and school teachers, who are thought to embody scientific knowledge, suggest they approve of magic in so far as they can explain its significance from a scientific point of view. In contrast to this discourse, however, even when something does not have a scientific explanation, these professionals often still suspect magic and work to counteract. A medical doctor suspected what he found in x-rays to be caused by magic, and school teachers held exorcism rituals and made offerings to spirits after witnessing spirit possession or hearing the sound of steps in a science room when nobody was there. Sensory experience can thus form the basis for acts that contradict verbal 210 discourse. The efficacy of magic is also situated in the social context where various types of mass media appeal to villagers' senses to affect their knowledge and choice of therapies. I argue that socalled modern phenomena including biomedicine, school education and mass media sometimes amplify the sensory experience of magic, thus strengthening people's perceptions of its efficacy

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
