Antagonistic and synergistic effects of glucocorticoids and IL-7 on CD4+ T cell activation
No full textGlucocorticoids (GCs) are steroidal compounds widely used to treat chronic and acute inflammatory diseases. In particular, GCs at pharmacological doses induce apoptosis of activated and naïve T cells, inhibit their proliferation and block pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion. At physiological concentrations, the effect of these steroids on T cell immunity are not yet fully understood, and various studies reported paradoxical roles exerted by GCs on T cell immunity. Here, we show that GCs surprisingly induce proliferation of activated CD4(+) T cells in the presence of IL-7, a cytokine secreted in the thymus and at mucosal sites. Increased proliferation is dependent on a GC-mediated survival of mitotic cells. Moreover, we observe a downmodulation of Th1 cytokine secretion in cells treated with GCs, an outcome which is not affected by the presence of IL-7. GCs exert thus a positive role in the presence of IL-7 by enhancing proliferation of CD4(+) T cells and simultaneously a negative role by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokine production
Combining Global and Local Merges in Logic-based Entity Resolution
No full textIn the recently proposed LACE framework for collective entity resolution, logical rules and constraints are used to identify pairs of entity references (e.g. author or paper ids) that denote the same entity. This identification is global: all occurrences of those entity references (possibly across multiple database tuples) are deemed equal and can be merged. By contrast, a local form of merge is often more natural when identifying pairs of data values, e.g. some occurrences of 'J. Smith' may be equated with 'Joe Smith', while others should merge with 'Jane Smith'. This motivates us to extend LACE with local merges of values and explore the computational properties of the resulting formalism

No full textTrabalho de Conclusão de Curso - Igor Cortes JunqueiraConclui-se que o realizado nesse trabalho atingiu de maneira satisfatória uma estrutura intermediária de abstração das informações de relacionamento contidas no Dicionário Histórico Biográfico Brasileiro. Ainda, as análises propostas para uma segunda etapa do projeto são bastante entusiasmantes e promissoras. Contudo, há muito campo a ser explorado e diversas possíveis melhorias em cima do trabalho realizado, e diversas abordagens no próprio texto citadas que poderiam melhorar várias facetas do trabalho, aumentando confiança nos resultados obtidos. Por fim, o processo de aprendizagem e experimentação de técnicas no decorrer do projeto fortalece a possibilidade de melhoria em todos os seus âmbitos. Ademais, aquilo que foi proposto como linha central se encontra disponibilizado e pronto para ser usado como base para a segunda etapa, mais abstrata e exploratória do trabalho

Conversion kinetics of oxyfluoride-derived YBCO films
No full textThesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, 2000.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 56-57).YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thin films were prepared on lanthanum aluminate (LAO) single crystals and buffered (5000 Y20 3, 500 Ce02) Ni-single crystal substrates by metal organic deposition (MOD) process. Glassy films were converted to epitaxial YBCO films, by heating in wet atmosphere of N2/02 mixture. A novel technique was used to determine the rate of conversion of films from glassy state to crystalline YBCO films. In this approach, the concentration of residual fluoride in the partially converted films was examined using fluoride ion selective electrode. Results obtained by this method were compared to results obtained by such methods as X-ray analysis and in-situ resistivity measurements. Analysis of data obtained by different methods showed that fluoride concentration measurement method is a fast and very accurate method. The influence of different factors on conversion rate was investigated by this approach, including high and low vapor pressure of water in the processing atmosphere, temperature and influence of substrate material on conversion. A simple model was proposed to describe the growth of crystalline YBCO film for diffusion controlled and reaction controlled growth kinetics. Results obtained by in-situ resistivity measurements were compared to results predicted by the model. The obtained data fits the model that describes interface reaction limited growth kinetics.by Igor L. Seleznev.S.M

Between Subjectivity and Object: Self in the Discourse of Modern Japanese Literature
No full text(in English): This thesis is devided into three parts. In the fist part, the development of literary discourse in Japan between Meiji and postwar period is described, with emphasis on the development of literary character and Subject in a work of literature. The second part theoretical apparatus for studiying and analyzing literary character is introduced, using contemporary literary theory. In that part relationship between literary character and its subject is also included. In the third part, these findings are applied on a specific literary works of Japanese postwar literature, on which development and changes of literary character are observed. The three analyzed works here are Kamen no kokuhaku by Mishima Yukio, Tanin no kao by Abe Kōbō and Man'en gan'nen no futtobōru by Ōe Kenzaburō
