Hands-on hands-off : a model of effective supervision
No full textBackground: Professor Rick Iedema and his colleagues explored the issue of autonomy versus direct supervision by examining junior doctors’ perspectives on supervisory relationships and interactions at a rural healthcare facility (Iedema et al. 2010). Based on the data, the authors proposed that supervision should navigate between ‘hands-on’ or ‘active’ forms wherein supervisors can provide direct support to facilitate a trainees’ skill development, and ‘hands-off’ or ‘passive’ supervision which encompasses fl exible supervisory support when a trainee is acting independently. Associate Professor Wendy Hu and colleagues from medicine, nursing, occupational therapy and physiotherapy at the University of Western Sydney are conducting a video study of supervisors engaging in actual formative assessments of the clinical competence of students in hospital, outpatient and private practice settings. Results from this study will be used to examine and illustrate the hands-onhands- off supervision model. Aims: Share fi ndings from research studies exploring the hand-on hands-off supervision model; Review video and photo case studies of supervision; Explore the implications of research outcomes for effective supervision. Methodology: The session will provide a framework for effective supervision and examine its practical implications

While serving as a police officer he examined the issue of police use of deadly force and the phenomenon of Victim Precipitated Homicide, also known as Suicide by Cop. His dissertation, entitled "Aspects of Police Use of Deadly Force in North America: The Phenomenon of Victim Precipitated Homicide" was for a Doctoral degree in Criminology at Simon Fraser University.
Dr. Parent has been qualified in US and Canadian courts as an expert in police shootings and in matters related to police use of deadly force. He is currently an Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University, School of Criminology - Police Studies.
In addition to providing expert testimony, Dr. Parent is a subject-matter expert in the area of police ethics and accountability. He has provided several training sessions on this subect and is the author of the Canadian Police Knowledge Network (CPKN) course entitled: "Police Ethics and Accountability"Rick Parent worked at the Justice Institute of BC from 1995 to 1998 and from 2005 to 2008

Social research at a time of fast feedback and rapid change: The case for ‘slow science’
Get PDFThis contribution offers a reflection on the shift in social science towards participative enquiry and collaborative research practices. In doing so, the paper challenges the common conception that the methodological indeterminacy that participatory research may occasion undermines its scientific credentials by rendering its processes and outcomes vulnerable to idiosyncratic events, subjective interpretations, local variability and chancy outcomes. The focus of the article is not just that participatory processes require research flexibility to enhance the pragmatic outcomes of research, but that the researcher’s theory and methodology may need to be recalibrated from discipline-controlled givens to publicly-negotiable points of departure. This latter point expands the paper’s argument to advocate for research that has “the power to be affected” (Hardt 2007, x) by the views, feelings and experiences of those it targets, and of those affected by its processes and conclusions. Using video-reflexive ethnography to illustrate this point, the article exemplifies what it means for the researcher(s) to be affected by the constraints inherent in their own research approach and disciplinary priorities (Iedema 2021).
