Evaluating Novel Matrix-Vector Multiplication Strategies in the LSTRS and TRUSTµ Methods for Large-Scale Trust-Region Subproblems and Regularization
In the regularization of ill-posed problems from image restoration, where we want to recover an image from blurred and noisy data, there are many methods that can be useful. Among those, the TRUSTmu method proposed in Rojas and Steihaug, 2002, is an efficient method for solving large-scale regularization problems with additional non-negativity constraints and is based on matrix-vector multiplication. The idea of TRUSTmu method is to solve a sequence of Trust-Region-Subproblems using the method LSTRS from Rojas, Santos and Sorensen, 2008. The goal of this project was to evaluate the performance and accuracy of LSTRS and TRUSTmu method when the following three different approaches to compute matrix-vector multiplication were used: Fast Monte Carlo Algorithms, GPU computing, and parallel computing. In order to work on the experiments, we developed a MATLAB software implemented the TRUSTmu method and used the LSTRS software from Rojas, Santos and Sorensen, 2008. The TRUSTmu software provided an interface that allows the user to pass the input matrix as an array or as a function for computing matrix-vector products, possibly with parameters. One of the application of this software was in image restoration field to recover images from blurred and noisy data.COSSEApplied mathematicsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
Technische WiskundeApplied mathematicsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
Zume hauekin… ekin lanari. Reflexiones sobre la génesis, naturaleza e inserción de la Ley de Instituciones Locales de Euskadi en el peculiar sistema de fuentes del Derecho vasco
This article describes first the process of negotiation and approval of Act 2/2016 of April 7th on Local Entities of Euskadi. Secondly, it carries out a detailed study of its nature as comprehensive act, being part of the «hard core» of the Basque institutional system, which puts an end to the three institutional levels of Euskadi and that by developing the Statute and the basic legislation regarding local regime, and by virtue of the possibilities of updating of the Basque historic rights, covered by the Constitution, it establishes its own local regime, that of the Basque foral municipality. An Act that defines competences among the different Basque institutional levels with a tough defence of local autonomy of Basque local entities without prejudice of reinforcing some competences of the Historic territories, specially in the field of local finances. Thirdly, the position of the Local Entities Act within the complex framework of the sources of Basque Law is studied, reaching the conclusion that it can be considered an act with a statutory task, being accordingly part of the so called statutory block. Fourthly, we refer to how this Act needs a special protection against possible tacit amendments thereto which could jeopardize the role that plays as one of the pillars of the legalinstitutional framework of the Basque self-government. Finally, the article ends with some brief conclusions which summarize the main ideas defended along it and with a personal assessment of the author regarding the Act
Multisensory Urban Design: Rethinking Sound as an Essential Part of Cities
Presented by the Smart Cities Research Institute.
Sound in the city has traditionally been regarded as noise: unwelcome, intrusive and stressful, to be eliminated by engineering or administrative controls. However, recent developments have emphasised the pleasant and invigorating aspects of urban sounds, and the design of urban soundscapes has emerged as a discipline.
What do people need and want to hear in the city, both consciously and subconsciously?
What is the role of bird calls, water sounds, or the ding of tram bells? Moreover, our senses are not isolated from each other.
Designs need to incorporate thermal microclimates, the visual and the tactile, with acoustic elements. Acoustic engineers, architects, musicians and healthcare experts all have a role to play.
A panel of experts recently probed these concepts at MPavilion, and now return to examine them in detail. Join us to expand your city senses
PC-based medical transcription verification system
Medical Transcription is a process in which a doctor hires a transcriptionist to transcribe the recorded audio of his patients\u27 medical history, records, and diagnosis. However, due to several factors such as noisy recording environment, unclear pronunciation of words, and the complexity of the medical lexicon, the transcriptionists have difficulty in understanding and transcribing the audio. It is imperative that the transcriptions are error-free but doctors are too busy to check the work of the transcriptionists thus quality control poses as a problem in manual transcription.
The aim of this research is to utilize speech recognition techniques to create a software that would aid transcriptionists in transcribing medical audio. Based on the knowledge that phonemes are characterized by their unique features, the system used several algorithms including a phoneme recognition, statistical algorithm, and artificial intelligence to recognize indecipherable audio selected by the user on the assumption that the word is included in the system\u27s database. Audio samples are acquired using a digital audio recorder that is connected to the computer via the USB port and are saved in .way format. Text files, on the other hand, are saved in .txt format. The GUI allows the user to view the audio\u27s waveform, playback the audio, open and edit a text file, and select parts of the audio segment for recognition. Another aspect of the GUI scans the text file and verifies the medical terms in the file if they are also present in the system\u27s database
Accelerating the LSTRS Algorithm
In a recent paper [Rojas, Santos, Sorensen: ACM ToMS 34 (2008), Article 11] an efficient method for solving the Large-Scale Trust-Region Subproblem was suggested which is based on recasting it in terms of a parameter dependent eigenvalue problem and adjusting the parameter iteratively. The essential work at each iteration is the solution of an eigenvalue problem for the smallest eigenvalue of the Hessian matrix (or two smallest eigenvalues in the potential hard case) and associated eigenvector(s). Replacing the implicitly restarted Lanczos method in the original paper with the Nonlinear Arnoldi method makes it possible to recycle most of the work from previous iterations which can substantially accelerate LSTRS
The Renewal of Song: Metalepsis and the Christological Revision of Psalmody in Paul
The productive yield of Richard Hays’ Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul for the study of Pauline intertextuality has not been matched by adequate reflection on questions of method, particularly on the character of the trope at the heart of the Haysian project: metalepsis, or “echo”. Nor has sufficient attention been given to the reception of biblical psalmody in Paul, and to the distinctiveness of psalmic discourse in relation to metaleptic process. This study accordingly attempts a close engagement with biblical psalmody as this appears at selected sites in Romans and 2 Corinthians, focusing on those sites which best demonstrate the distinctive character of psalmody, and so offer to refine an account of metalepsis. In particular, it examines quotations which are attributed or attributable to David or to Christ, and sites in which psalmody serves to modulate Paul’s discourse without recourse to quotation. In so doing, this study sets out to enrich the Haysian account of metalepsis by discerning and correcting two biases. In relation to method, Haysian metalepsis is found to license maximalist readings of intertexts on the presumption of narrativity, which cannot be fully sustained in relation to psalmody. In relation to hermeneutics, Haysian metalepsis is shown to privilege dialectical accounts of Pauline intertextuality, in which the voice of scripture is richly and sympathetically invoked in Paul’s discourse. By resisting these biases, the present study is able to offer a more nuanced account of metalepsis, one better suited to psalmody, and to discern a more complex picture of Pauline intertextuality. Within it, Christ is richly configured as a psalmist in Paul, rhetorically empowered and tendered for imitation, yet nearly always at the expense of David, subverting the mode of agency he represents, in hermeneutical gestures which are dialectical in form but heuristic in effect
Hispanic american novelists splendor’s and misery’s : readings, sociability and trajectories (1830-1880).
Esplendores e misérias de romancistas hispano-americanos : leituras, sociabilidades e trajetórias (1830-1880).
Hispanic American Authors of at least one Novel published from 1830 to 1880, are analyzed by their countries, gender and age of literary debut. The initial spectrum of the novelist in this region of Spanish language proposes an interesting model at the implantation in the newly independent territories of this literary genre. The French roman de feuilleton fascination was shared by these writers.
