Enhancing management accounting practice through Islamic values: a case study of a Malaysian Islamic bank / Mohd Haniff Zainuldin, Ibrahim Kamal Abdul Rahman and Mohd Nizal Haniff
This is a concept paper discussing how certain Islamic principles are infused into the overall management accounting practices of an Islamic Bank which was incorporated in Malaysia. The Bank has successfully integrated these principles in its management system and in turn has created a unique approach to management accounting practices for an Islamic Financial Institution (IFI). This approach earned the Bank, the prestigious National Award for Management Accounting (NAfMA) in 2008for the best practice solutions award category in recognition of the Bank’s effective applications of management accounting system and tools that has had a positive impact of daily practice. This paper discusses the strategies employed by the Bank and its application of Islamic values
Optical waveguides in benzocyclobutene (BCB 4024-40) polymer
The fabrication and characterization processes of single mode optical waveguide based on photosensitive benzoCyclobutene (bCb 4024-40) polymer are described. The polymer film thickness for various coating speed and refractive index are measured by the method of prism coupling. The waveguide is fabricated using the photolithography and chemical etching technique on bK7 glass substrate with a thin layer of Sio2 as cover. The waveguide loss is measured using the conventional cut back method which results on an average loss of 3.5 db/cm
The role of the accused in English and Islamic criminal justice
This thesis is a comparative study of the role of the accused in the systems of
English and Islamic criminal justice. It seeks to explore the underlying
relationship between the individual and the state through an historical, structural
and contextual analysis of their rules relating to questioning and of confessions.
The analysis of the English system covers the period 1800 to 1984, with
particular reference to developments during the nineteenth century when the
foundations for the modern English state were established. The analysis of the
Islamic system combines traditionally Islamic and modern methods, assessing the
"Islamisation" movement in Malaysia through a religico-structural understanding
of juristic opinion from the four main schools of Sunnite jurisprudence.
The thesis contributes to existing knowledge on a number of levels: first, it
questions and revises the "myth" of "progress" that has dominated observations
of the history of the English criminal justice system; second, it elucidates the
relationship between Islamic law in theory and the law that is applied and
proposed in its name in Muslim states; third, it provides an analytical framework
for drawing comparisons between the underlying values of the systems of English
and Islamic criminal justice.
While acknowledging fundamental differences in terms of outlook and
articulation, the author concludes there are important similarities expressed
through such notions as "suspect" in the English system and "kafir"I"fasiq" in the
Islamic. These act as intermediate constitutional categories to whom the state
owe less protection. But the author notes also that these similarities are not
observed necessarily in the "law" which is implemented or proposed in Muslim
states; exact correspondence depends upon the over-arching political structure
and the institution of Caliphate.
The thesis is divided into six chapters: chapter one sets out the conventional view
of the historical development of English criminal procedure and evidence;
chapter two subjects that to a critique and chapter three offers a revised thesis.
Chapter four, explores methods for interpreting and explaining Islam; chapter
five sets out rules relating to confessions and questioning according to the four
Sunni schools; chapter six puts them into "context" through an examination of
the "Islamisation" process in Malaysia

Polymer based multimode interference optical devices
A research on polymer based optical waveguides and devices have been a topic of great interest in optical communications due to its pertinent advantages which include versatility and reduction in fabrication cost. This thesis is significantly devoted towards the first ever development of single mode optical waveguides and multimode interference (MMI) interconnecting devices based on photosensitive BenzoCyclobutene (BCB 4024-40) polymer. The developed MMI optical devices are splitters, splitter-combiner, cross couplers and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) coupler. These development process can be divided into four essential stages; material characterization, design and modelling, fabrication and device characterization. In each stage, several important techniques and equipments have been employed. The devices are fabricated on BK7 glass substrate and thin film of silica as a clad using soda lime glass mask of ±0.2 µm resolution. A relatively high propagation loss of 3.55 dB/cm has been observed for single mode waveguide structure, which is due to the resulting sidewall roughness. The splitting uniformity of symmetric MMI splitters were found to be better than 0.6 dB and the insertion loss for all splitter structures were measured to be less than 1.5 dB at 1550 nm wavelength. The 1×2 splitters were interconnected to function as a splitter-combiner which is ideally used as a basic building block for Mach-Zehnder Interferometer. The measured structure yielded an insertion loss of 1.85 dB for device size of 4.2 mm. The insertion loss of the 2×2 and 3×3 cross couplers based on general and paired interference were measured and found to be between 2.5 to 3.5 dB for 6 mm to 10 mm of cavity size. A 1310 nm and 1550 nm WDM coupler is demonstrated in which the device is designed based on a combination of general interference and paired interference mechanisms. The measured crosstalk at 1310 nm is -14.42 dB and at 1550 nm is -20.61 dB. The measured insertion losses were in the range of 3.2 to 3.5 dB for MMI cavity size of 7 mm. A novel 1×2 MMI thermal photonics switch is proposed. The switch uses a ridge waveguide of BCB 4024-40 polymer on silica clad. The proposed structure works well with crosstalk level of -28 dB and low switching power. Significantly, this research has successfully demonstrated the possibility of applying a photosensitive BCB 4024-40 polymer in the low cost development of integrated optics components

Flexible housing application of scaffolding system as a tools in sustainable design
The residents of high-rise housing have rigid indoor layout that fail to respond to the user change. Thus, the unique identity of residents needs to be addressed through a flexible space and housing layout scheme that can adapt to the user needs and culture. The research aim is to study flexible housing that use scaffolding system as a tool for sustainable living which adapt to the user needs and growth. The flexibility of scaffolding as a tool in house units has been explored during the research. Scaffolding is the most common reusable material, having standardised components, a wide range of forms, and a very simple assembly technique. Case studies have been analysed as methodology for this paper that are based on flexible house and scaffolding structure for interior space flexibility. The author argues through the use of examples, that the adaptability and flexibility of living space to the changing demands of people is a decisive element in the period we live in. Flexibility enables consumers to select the best solution from a multitude of possibilities and simply or inexpensively modify it, which is also part of the notion of sustainable development
Optical Waveguide Modelling Based On Scalar Finite Difference Scheme
A Numerical Method Based On Scalar Finite Difference Scheme Was Adopted And Programmed On MATLAB® Platform For Optical Waveguide Modeling Purpose. Comparisons With Other Established Methods In Terms Of Normalized Propagation Constant Were Included To Verify Its Applicability. The Comparison Results Obtained Were Proven To Have The Same Qualitative Behaviour. Furthermore, The Performances Were Evaluated In Terms Of Computation Complexity, Mesh Size, And Effect Of Acceleration Factor. Computation Complexity Can Be Reduced By Increasing The Mesh Size Which Will Then Produce More Error. The Problem Can Be Rectified By Introducing The Acceleration Factor, Successive Over Relaxation (SOR) Parameter. It Shows That SOR Range Between 1.3 And 1.7 Can Give Shorter Computation Time, While Producing Constant Value Of Simulation Results
