Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Utilization of university research findings for national development
No full textResearch is one of the hallmarks of University activities. As a result, numerous research findings and discoveries abound in a number of Universities in West Africa. Some of these findings are ground breaking while some are not necessarily so. The impact of a University must be felt within and outside its community. Apart from the production of man-power and the involvement of universities in community services, university findings in West Africa, like their counter-part in the developed world, ought to be utilized for national development. This is against the backdrop of existing practices where most university research findings and discoveries only end up in the University libraries. In the developed world, research findings play vital role in the socio-economic and political development of such nations. But same cannot be said of some African countries where research product and findings tend to be largely seen as only "academic exercise". But the developed world has gone a step further by utilizing academic resources from tertiary institutions in enhancing every aspect of their national life. The paper advocates a University- Stakeholders summits to address the issue of numerous research findings and discoveries, many of which are presently largely underutilized. Since a number of findings and discoveries are known to exist in most of these universities, they should be harnessed, processed, sieved and turned around for developmental activities in Africa and beyond
The influence of some indices of accountability for quality educational programmes in Oyo state, Nigeria
No full textAccountability was traditionally used to refer to public service, in which stewardship of public funds must be accounted. Accountability as an educational concept, in recent years, has to do with advancing the effectiveness of school systems. If educators are to be accountable for students’ performance, the expected performance should be clearly stated and adequately measured. Accountability should also provide information on how money has been spent, especially on infrastructure/facilities, teachers salaries and what return has been made on investment in terms of students’academic achievement. In this regard, researchers (Obemeata 1995, and Yoloye 2003, 2004) emphasized the need for accountability to demonstrate returns of taxpayer’s money invested in education. For instance, Mark (2009), in a paper titled “Looking into Linking Teacher Pay to Student Performance” stated that President Obama “laid out his vision for education... including linking teacher pay to student performance”. For accountability to flourish there must be a positive link between accountability on the teachers ’ part and the salaries they are paid for their particular job which is teaching. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Investigation of factors responsible for poor reading habits among secondary school students in Lagos State, Nigeria
No full textA cultivated reading habit is crucial in education because it is the vehicle that drives and enhances learning in any field. One thousand students who were randomly selected from twenty senior secondary schools in Lagos city constituted the sample for the study. The study revealed that 60% of the respondents’ considerable part of their time watching European football matches on the television instead of reading their textbooks. The study also revealed that 80% of the students spend their prime time watching home videos on African Magic or Nollywood as against reading their textbooks. The study further shows that most of the students pay more attention to modem technologies like cell phones, social media and computer games. Furthermore, the finding of the study shows that reading activities are not encouraged in most of the sample schools. Therefore, the study recommends that stakeholders in education should set up a monitoring team to go round schools to monitor study habits of students. Also, parents should be encouraged to monitor their children reading habits at home. The study also recommends that functional libraries should be developed and equipped in secondary schools to encourage reading among senior secondary school students in Lagos State. In addition, awards should be given to students who are found to have developed meaningful reading habit
Students classroom activeness as correlate of academic achievement in english language in Ibadan metropolis
No full textThe study investigated students' classroom activeness as correlate of their academic achievement in English Language in Ibadan Metropolis, Oyo State. Three research questions were developed to guide the study. An ex postfacto research design of survey research type and the target population consists is SSSII Students in Ibadan Metropolis. Using simple random sampling technique, 150 SSS II students across secondary schools in Ibadan metropolis were selected as respondents for the study. Students' classroom active participation rating scale was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics and pearson product moment correlation were used in the data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that: majority of the students with the mean of 2.50 and above do participate actively during English Language lesson. Also, there is low negative correlation (r = -.103, p=.208) between students’ questioning/answering questions in the classroom and academic achievement in English Language. Also, there is low negative correlation (r = 114, p=.164) between students' initiation/contribution to classroom discussion and academic achievement in English Language. It was therefore, recommended that teachers of English Language should motivate students to participate more actively in the classroom by asking or answering questions during English Language lessons

Therefore, there is need more than ever before, to evolve a sound method of integrating school-based assessment in the certification grades of secondary school students. Unfortunately, studies have shown that some teachers lacked competent experience in the practice of school-based assessment, while some award marks arbitrarily thereby bringing to question the validity and reliability of school-based assessment scores.
