    Do Wolf-Rayet stars have similar locations in hosts as type Ib/c supernovae and long gamma-ray bursts?

    Aims. We study the distribution of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars and their subtypes with respect to their host galaxy light distribution. We thus want to investigate whether WR stars are potential progenitors of stripped-envelope core-collapse supernovae (SNe) and/or long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs). Methods. We derived the relative surface brightness (fractional flux) at the locations of WR stars and compared with similar results for LGRBs and SNe.We examined two nearby galaxies,M 83 and NGC 1313, for which a comprehensive study of theWR population exists. These two galaxies contain a sufficiently large number ofWR stars and sample different metallicities. To enable the comparison, the images of the galaxies were processed to make them appear as they would look at a higher redshift. The robustness of our results against several sources of uncertainty was investigated with the aid of Monte Carlo simulations. Results. We find that the WC star distribution favours brighter pixels than the WN star population. WC stars are more likely drawn from the same distribution as SNe Ic than from other SN distributions, while WN stars show a higher degree of association with SNe Ib. It can also not be excluded that WR (especially WC) stars are related to LGRBs. Some differences between the two galaxies do exist, especially in the subtype distributions, and may stem from differences in metallicity. Conclusions. Although a conclusive answer is not possible, the expectation thatWR stars are the progenitors of SNe Ib/c and LGRBs survives this test. The trend observed between the distributions of WN and WC stars, as compared to those of SNe Ib and Ic, is consistent with the theoretical picture that SNe Ic result from progenitors that have been stripped of a larger part of their envelope

    Validation of the FACSCount AF system for determination of sperm concentration in boar semen

    A flow cytometric method has been developed for rapid determination of sperm concentration in semen from various mammalian species.* All cells containing DNA are stained with SYBR-14 or propidium iodide (PI) and sperm concentration is determined in relation to an internal standard of fluorescent microspheres ( beads). Satisfactory staining can be achieved within 2-3 min and the following flow cytometric analysis on the FACSCount AF System rapidly provides the user with a precise and accurate assessment of the sperm concentration. In this study, the FACSCount AF System and Sperm Counting Reagent ( BD Biosciences) was compared with microscopic counting using a Burker-Turk haemocytometer. In addition, sperm concentration was determined using the Corning 254 spectrophotometer which is used routinely by Danish artificial insemination stations for boars. The results show that the agreement between flow cytometry and microscopic counting is very high. The slope for the regression line was 1.12 (SE = 0.03) with an estimated intercept with the Y-axis of 22 x 10(6) sperm/ml (SE = 10 x 10(6) sperm/ml) and an estimated error of the model of 10 x 10(6) sperm/ml. For the spectrophotometer, the slope of the regression line was 1.09 (SE = 0.07) with an estimated intercept of 137 x 10(6) sperm/ml (SE = 25 x 10(6) sperm/ml). The average error made by the spectrophotometer was 55 x 10(6) sperm/ml. In addition, the results obtained using flow cytometry was highly repeatable ( CV = 2.7%) in comparison with the spectrophotometric method ( CV = 6.3%). These results indicate that the FACSCount AF System is a valuable tool for precise and accurate assessment of sperm concentration in boar semen and that use of this system may lead to production of more uniform insemination doses containing a specific number of sperm per dose

    High ionic conductivity in confined bismuth oxide-based heterostructures

    Bismuth trioxide in the cubic fluorite phase (delta-Bi2O3) exhibits the highest oxygen ionic conductivity. In this study, we were able to stabilize the pure delta-Bi2O3 at low temperature with no addition of stabilizer but only by engineering the interface, using highly coherent heterostructures made of alternative layers of delta-Bi2O3 and Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), deposited by pulsed laser deposition. The resulting [delta-Bi2O3/YSZ] heterostructures are found to be stable over a wide temperature range (500-750 degrees C) and exhibits stable high ionic conductivity over a long time comparable to the value of the pure delta-Bi2O3, which is approximately two orders of magnitude higher than the conductivity of YSZ bulk.     While working on a monograph of Ctenitis (Dryopteridaceae) found in Madagascar we discovered that two Tectaria-related names need nomenclatural attention: the name C. poolii (C. Christensen) Tardieu- Blot is not legimate, and Dryopteris blepharorachis C. Christensen should be reinstalled from synonymy. A new combination, Tectaria blepharorachis (C. Christensen) Li Bing Zhang & Yi F. Duan, is proposed. Line drawings of pinnae of the both related species are provided for identification purpose

    Issues in the Prediction of the Mechanical Properties of Open Graded Mixes

    Within the pavement engineering community, open graded mixes (OGM) are regarded as mixes capable of reducing noise and improving wet skid resistance. However, during their design life, these asphalt mixes are known to suffer from a particular distress type known as raveling. This results in a premature failure of a road network. In order to study the propensity of OGM to raveling, homogenization-based approaches are considered to be accessible and effective. One of the most widely accepted homogenization models for asphalt concrete is proposed by Christensen et al. Several studies related to homogenization techniques have been conducted in the past; however, to the best of the authors’ knowledge not a lot of attention has been paid to the study of OGM by means of homogenization models. The other limitation of the Christensen model is that some parameters are difficult to physically understand. Under the above realization, the objective of the paper is twofold: (1) to propose a modification of the Christensen model for OGM; and (2) to verify the modified model’s capability in predicting the mechanical properties of OGM. In general, it was found that once the proposed factor is calibrated for a given OGM by laboratory tests the obtained results are accurate.Pavement Engineerin

    Bridging: Some Personal Reflections

    This contribution to Jaan Valsiner’s Festschrift is a summary of impressions and discussions the author has had rather continuously since 2013 in the context of cultural psychology, including dialogues with Jaan. On one hand, they are an acknowledgment of the integrative ambitions of cultural psychology. On the other hand, they express a concern that cultural psychology is defining a conceptual basis which, contrary to the ambitions, is isolating it from other necessary theoretical approaches, from important parts of applied psychology, and finally from psychology’s critical obligations in contemporary society. At the same time, however, the extensive dialogues with Jaan have had a broader, deeper, and more general focus than cultural psychology, drawing on Jaan’s immense knowledge and insight in the history of psychology and other fields of study.     Physiological adaption to maternal malaria and other adverse exposure:low birth weight, functional capacity, and possible metabolic disease in adult life

    The concept of developmental origins of health and disease and the epidemic of noncommunicable diseases in low- and middle-income countries has increased the focus on low birth weight (LBW). Most studies linking LBW to future risk of metabolic diseases have focused on maternal nutrition and anemia. Several studies have shown that LBWis linked to skeletal muscle insulin resistance and future risk of type 2 diabetes, possibly caused by permanent modifications in skeletal muscle morphology and biochemistry leading to lowered functional capacity and physical activity in adult life. In some parts of the world, malaria infection during pregnancy is the most common cause of anemia and LBW. By causing disruption to nutrient supply, as well as hypoxia, placental malaria and anemia negatively impact intrauterine fetal development. Thus, in utero exposure to placental malaria and consequent LBW may impart a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes in early adult life. This has not been investigated systematically. Worldwide, an estimated 125 million pregnancies occur annually in malarial areas with a vast potential for intrauterine growth restriction, LBW, and subsequent risk of metabolic dysfunction, including type 2 diabetes; this potential link also opens an opportunity for early prevention of future metabolic diseases by paying greater attention to malaria during pregnancy
