European urban regeneration through intelligent applications

    No full text
With the advent of new technologies, cultural heritage can be experienced within a more complex tourist offer based on highly personalized products, tailored to the needs of visitors through feedback, geo-localization, advanced services and multifunctional information. and in real time. Among the types of tourism in constant and rapid growth there is that linked to cultural heritage, with the inevitable repercussions on local economies, destinations and local communities. Cultural tourism attracts an increasing number of tourists / travelers with changing needs; no longer and not only linked to the search for fun but, also, to those of new experiences aimed at satisfying an intellectual, personal, and emotionally satisfying involvement. The importance of innovation, also seen as a new support for the tourist development of the territories, is translated through ICT that facilitate the use of the territory, but also as a system of informal networks between the population and the territories. The transformative power of intelligent technologies not only in terms of economic potential but also of social and experiential dimensions is now widely recognized. From this perspective, the new initiative of the European Commission "EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF SMART TOURISM - ECoST" should be read, which through the holding of a competition aims to identify the European Capital of Intelligent Tourism. In addition to the deepening of the most recent theoretical conceptualizations, the study will be based on the deepening of the ECoST Project and on the examination of the potential of some Italian cities

The geography of migrations between causes, definitions and permanent identities. The case of Apulian Arbëria

    No full text
The term "immigration" is endowed with a very meaningful semantic charge: it not only expresses a physical shift and a change of a geographical scenario, but it is a socioeconomic phenomenon as well as a transfer of cultural reference models with a plurality of consequences for the emigrant subject and for the host communities. The causes of continuous displacements of populations from their place of origin to other destinations are the most varied, political, religious, and economic, and sometimes they are linked together. The case study considered is the Italian Arberia; a linguistic-cultural island present, today, only in some areas of central-southern Italy but with a very ancient history of difficult social integration. The purpose of the investigation is to understand the spread of the phenomenon and outline future prospects, through the examination of the most significant literature, historical documents and also a fieldwork through interviews with some representatives of the Apulian arbëreshë communities

    Percorsi narrativi negli spazi urbani

    No full text

Towards the tip oh the hill: discovering the hidden histories of Italy

In Italy, the past 20 years of tourism development has been characterised by strong plans followed by investments in areas already well established from a tourism market perspective. These areas have been able to generate a high demand for tourism, due to the presence of relevant resources, either in the form of their cultural features - especially cities of interest to art lovers with buildings of histotical significance - or natural characteristics - such as the climate, the sea and the mountains. In the course of time, certain destinations have consolidated their role as ltalian leaders in tourism. However, a selection of smaller inland destinations have recently started becoming the centre of development initiatives, which have given them visibility in the market. A more diversified tourism portfolio, both in terms of activities and of locations, has become the focus of their tourism strategies. These initiatives are aimed at enhancing the visibility of those 'non-traditional destinations' (see European Commission, 2002) rich in tourism potential. In this way, they are given the opportunity to become part of special itineraries based on identified conunon themes and be included in the wider tourist circuit. This type of tourism is considered as a valuable form of 'niche' tourism, aiming at the enhancement and promotion of territorial and cultura! values of certain less known regions and municipalities lagging behind others in terms of resources, organisation, market visibility and economie development. The need for implementing forms of tourism that involve not only the wellestablished coastal areas is strongly felt in the southern Italian region of Apulia. If on the one hand, this region is fairly well known for its seaside resorts, on the other hand there are numerous inland villages that could be enhanced through the use of their heritage. In relation to this, appropriate policies in line with sustainable tourism development and with the preservation of locai resources should be identified. Apulia has notable historical and architectural resources which could be viewed as elements around which to organise and better exploit forms of tourism involving towns of artistic interest, smaller centres and rural villages. The two cases examined in this chapter, namely the EU LEADER Initiative and the Grange Flags Project, reflect a search for alternative and innovative forms of tourism based on interesting historical and cultura) traditions

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The rediscovery of characteristic rural landscapes. An opportunity to create new activities?

For some years now, researchers in many geographical and other disciplinary fields have believed that historical rural landscapes contain an educational value for the landscapes of the future, in terms of analysis as well as protection in general and geo-economic aspects in particular, as an identity expression of the territory and as a preponderant element for the recovery of the same. In fact, in landscape studies the idea is widespread that historical and characteristic rural landscapes are not only the elements of a cultural heritage capable of preserving the memory of the past but also the bearers of a rational perspective for the future of European agriculture. The COVID-19 pandemic caused social and economic changes; critical issues highlight the need for a more integrated approach, taking into account the rediscovery of rural landscapes to practice open-air activities. Through a review of the international literature and the analysis of case studies, the paper aims to highlight the renewal processes of some cultural practices abandoned over the years but which today are an integral part of the local economy. In particular, the paper analyses the cases of two characteristic citrus groves in Apulia and Sicily, in the south of Italy. They demonstrate how the renewal of ancient practices such as the cultivation of citrus fruits together with the value of landscapes can represent an opportunity for an economic development of territories.

    Coastal Heritage and Territorial Signs

Geographical space must be understood as a progressive and conscious construction - both from an individual and a collective point of view - in which the geographical elements and the relationships between the elements themselves are placed. From the post-World War II period and for the following twenty years, the coastal area has maintained an albeit minimal break with the man-made spaces; since the seventies of the last century, rapid industrial development has increasingly occupied the coasts. Over time, the overlapping of the various activities, more attentive to economic benefits than ecological values, has designed a complex system of occupation of this delicate space according to whether the purpose was the occupation of the coast or the coastal sea. The ties, interests, and conflicts that arise in the maritime-coastal region (and which project themselves into wider spaces than those actually covered by its constituent elements) make it impossible to define a pre-established amplitude

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
