Jealous Men but Evil Women: The Double Standard in Cases of Domestic Homicide
In 1989, Sarah Thornton killed her abusive husband with a knife, after years of abuse and threats to her daughter. She was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Also in 1989, Kiranjit Ahluwalia soaked her husband’s bedclothes with petrol and set them alight. He died from burns 10 days later, and she was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
In 1991, Joseph McGrail kicked his alcoholic common-law wife to death whilst she lay unconscious. He walked free from court, the judge telling him that “this lady would have tried the patience of a saint”. In 1992, Les Humes told a court that he “saw a red mist” after his wife admitted loving someone else. He fatally stabbed her whilst their teenage children struggled with him. He was convicted of manslaughter due to provocation and was imprisoned for 7 years.
Double standards in judicial processes are notorious. Chivalric justice is the case in which women are given lighter sentences for similar offences to men. This does not apply in the case of domestic homicide, where women are seen as evil and calculating when killing a spouse, men are seen as provoked beyond reason. Women who kill husbands do so with weapons that they need to acquire, men do it with their hands or weapons that are immediately available. So it is seems the defence of crime passionnel is reserved for men; women, it is implied, premeditate the murder of abusive husbands, and are justifiably punished. This paper explores the double standard in uxoricide vs. mariticide, and why it appears that killing a wife is justified and killing a husband is evi
Claudia Hernández – por una poética de la prosa en tiempos violentos
This article analyzes the short fiction of Salvadorian author Claudia Hernández, specifically her collected stories De fronteras in its context of production and publication as well as focusing in Hernández ́ proposal of a particular aesthetic language. The analysis focuses on the literary possibilities offered by a narrative model which privileges conciseness and briefness and that at the same time engages in the exploration of the phenomenon of violence in literature and its key role in the internal logic of writing.
THE FUTURE IN CENTRAL BANKS ACTIVITY – CENTRAL BANK DIGITAL CURRENCY –
Developments in recent years in the technologies that underpin money transfers and financial investments have challenged banking in general and central banking in particular. On the one hand, with the onset and manifestation of the 2008 crisis, the banking system is being called into question as to whether it can be trusted, and on the other hand, also in the same historical context, blockchain technology is emerging and is seen as a threat by banks. Lately, there has been interest in Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) which are a digital replacement for banknotes and coins in physical form. In this paper we will highlight the features of CBDCs and the proposed Ethereum-based central bank money technology

While progress has been made in identifying the global galaxy properties linked to the ionizing escape fraction fescLyC , little is currently known about how spatially resolved galaxy properties impact it. We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging data obtained in the Lyα and Continuum Origins Survey (LaCOS). LaCOS consists of HST imaging covering rest-frame optical and UV bands for a subsample of 42 galaxies in the Low redshift Lyman Continuum Survey, including 22 LyC emitters ( fescLyC=0.01-0.49 ). Here, we describe the sample, observations, and data reduction, and investigate connections between global and sub-kiloparsec Lyα emission and fescLyC . We confirm the correlation between fescLyC and EWLyα, and the anticorrelation with r50, when using values obtained via global photometry. We also find correlations previously found with spectroscopy with global photometric LLyα, fescLyα , ΣSFR, and fescLyC , but with a smaller degree of correlations ( ∣Δτ∣¯∼0.1 ). We find correlations are strongest between Lyα observables (LLyα, EWLyα) and fescLyC when measured in a small aperture around the brightest UV source in each galaxy. We interpret these results as evidence that LyC photons escaping on the line of sight are contributed by a small number of UV-bright compact regions in most galaxies in LaCOS. © 2025. A Retrospective Study
Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s).Diabetes is a risk factor for greater severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) is an independent predictor of critical illness, and it is reported to have a stronger association than absolute hyperglycemia. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship of absolute hyperglycemia and SHR with the severity of COVID-19, since there are no studies investigating SHR in patients with COVID-19. We conducted a retrospective observational study on hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in the first months of the pandemic, regarding absolute hyperglycemia, SHR, and severity outcomes. Of the 374 patients, 28.1% had a previous diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Absolute hyperglycemia (64.8% versus 22.7%; p < 0.01) and SHR [1.1 (IQR 0.9–1.3) versus 1.0 (IQR 0.9–1.2); p < 0.001] showed a statistically significant association with previous diabetes. Absolute hyperglycemia showed a significant association with clinical severity of COVID-19 (79.0% versus 62.7%; p < 0.001), need for oxygen therapy (74.8% versus 54.4%; p < 0.001), invasive mechanical ventilation (28.6% versus 11.6%; p < 0.001), and intensive care unit (30.3% versus 14.9%; p = 0.002), but not with mortality; by contrast, there was no statistically significant association between SHR and all these parameters. Our results are in agreement with the literature regarding the impact of absolute hyperglycemia on COVID-19 severity outcomes, while SHR was not a significant marker. We therefore suggest that SHR should not be evaluated in all patients admitted in the hospital for COVID-19, and we encourage the standard measures at admission of blood glucose and HbA1c levels.publishersversionpublishe

The intervention proposal aims to develop in primary childhood students their skills through sensory boxes as a teaching tool, which allows them to promote the exploration of their environment through the senses; experimentation, concentration and imagination, in the preschool and first grades of the C.E Pontón de Río Negro Bocas del Guayuriba Headquarters. Through this strategy, we seek to encourage the learning process in boys and girls in a healthy and effective way. This research project was carried out in a rural public school, showing that a large number of parents perform informal jobs so with many difficulties they can barely satisfy their basic needs. Along the same lines, some families belong to floating communities, a product of the forced displacements brought about by the country's violence and external conflicts, the economic crisis and temporary jobs in the oil, agricultural and energy industries of the region. The work is focused on strengthening sensory skills and learning processes in childhood through the creation of an intervention proposal based on María Montessori's methodology, for which prior research is carried out on the author and her methodology. In summary, this research points out that sensory boxes are playful, appropriate and convenient tools as a strategy for the development and strengthening of sensory skills in the target population with a view to improving their cognitive, motor and socio-emotional processes in the future, taking as their axis the pedagogical line of María Montessori is central
