    No full text

    Enel: CSR and Performance Measurement

    No full text
The Enel case is focused on the impact of CSR on performance measurement and evaluation. Particularly, it points out the impact that a CSR approach can have on performance measurement both for external and internal users. On the one side, we refer to the external reporting for communication and information towards the stakeholders (CSR disclosure), such as the triple bottom line reporting, or the environmental and social balance sheet; on the other side, it is taken into consideration the managerial reporting devoted to support the management in the evaluation of business performance and in the decision making process. With regard to CSR disclosure, and considering an historical point of view, the case deals with the introduction of the social balance sheet and the environmental reporting in 1996, the ethical code in 2002, and the sustainability balance sheet in 2003. Referring to the managerial reporting, the case describes how, since 2003, the CSR principles have been introduced in the strategic planning, budgeting and managerial reporting. It gives also an account of the introduction of a Sustainability Balanced Scorecard. The case deals also with the reasons why a company decides to revise its performance measurement and evaluation systems, in order to align them to the CSR approach, the related advantages and difficulties, and the technical issues (the contents of the sustainability balance sheet and reporting, the choice of KPI, the IT issues, and so on)

The Role of strategic management control systems in servitization strategies

    No full text
The paper aims at: (i) highlighting the main characteristics of the servitization strategies pursued by manufacturing firms; (ii) analyzing the drivers of profitability in manufacturing businesses, dealing with servitization; (iii) identifying the role of the management control systems to support the strategy implementation. The literature review is followed by the presentation of the Alfa case study, that served as a base to discuss the role of strategic management control systems to cope with product service system (PSS) and servitization

Completeness and calibration of the Italian Seismological Instrumental and Parametric Database (ISIDe) before 16 April 2005

The Italian Seismological Instrumental and Parametric Database (ISIDe) is the recipient of earthquake data collected in real-time by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), and used by the studies of earthquake forecasting and seismic hazard assessment in Italy in the last decade. When it went online, following a significant improvement of the seismic acquisition system of INGV, it was including only data since the second fortnight of April 2005. About ten years later, the data since the beginning of 1985 suddenly appeared without any prior notice than the updating of the starting date of the dataset. However, the characteristics of the added data appeared clearly different from the following period both in terms of the numbers of located earthquakes and of types of magnitudes provided. After having analyzed the numerical consistency and the calibration of magnitudes of ISIDe as a function of time from 1985 to 15 April 2005, we can say that such a dataset is incomplete and poorly calibrated compared to other catalogs of Italian seismicity (CSTI, CSI, and HORUS) available for the same period. Hence, we suggest not using it as is for statistical analyses of Italian seismicity. However, it provides some magnitudes that are missed by other catalogs and thus might be used for improving such catalogs

ISIde : A rice modelling platform for in silico ideotyping

Ecophysiological models can be successfully used to analyze genotype by environment interactions, thus supporting breeders in identifying key traits for specific growing conditions. This is especially true for traits involved with resistance/tolerance to biotic and abiotic stressors, which occurrence can vary greatly both in time and space. However, no modelling tools are available to be used directly by breeders, and this is one of the reasons that prevents an effective integration of modelling activities within breeding programs. ISIde is a software platform specifically designed for district-specific rice ideotyping targeting (i) resistance/tolerance traits and (ii) breeders as final users. Platform usability is guaranteed by a highly intuitive user interface and by exposing to users only settings involved with genetic improvement. Other information needed to run simulations (i.e., data on soil, climate, management) is automatically provided by the platform once the study area, the variety to improve and the climate scenario are selected. Ideotypes indeed can be defined and tested under current and climate change scenario, thus supporting the definition of strategies for breeding in the medium-long term. Comparing the performance of current and improved genotype, the platform provides an evaluation of the yield benefits exclusively due to the genetic improvement introduced. An example of the application of the ISIde platform in terms of functionalities and results that can be achieved is reported by means of a case study concerning the improvement of tolerance to heat stress around flowering in the Oristanese rice district (Italy). The platform is currently available for the six Italian rice districts. However, the software architecture allows its extension to other growing areas – or to additional genotypes – via dedicated tools available at the application page

ISIDe, an Italian Seismic Data Base with minimum magnitude of completeness ML 1.8

    No full text
ISIDe, the Italian Seismic Instrumental and parametric DatabasE, includes today more than 17000 earthquakes occurred in Italy and surrounding seas since April 16th 2005, ranging from magnitude ML 0.2 to ML 5.7. All the ML are computed from synthetic Wood-Anderson records obtained from horizontal broad band and very-broad band registrations. The minimum magnitude of completeness is ML 1.9, as computed from the cumulated Gutenberg-Richter distribution. The ML 4.8 event occurred in the Gargano peninsula (southern Italy) on May 29th 2006 is the crustal earthquake of maximum magnitude included in the catalog; it was followed on December 10th 2006 by an ML 4.5 earthquake, about 40 km northeast of the previous event. The largest earthquake of the catalog (ML 5.7) occurred on October 26th 2006 in the southern Tyrrhenian sea at a depth of 220 km. Although ISIDe is spanning only the last three years and half of Italian seismicity, it is unprecedented in Italy for completeness and homogeneity and represents an optimum test data set for small and moderate seismicity pattern model verification. ISIDe is now available at http://iside.rm.ingv.it/.UnpublishedHersonissos, Crete, Greece5.2. TTC - Banche dati di sismologia strumentaleope
