Abstract LB-012: Deoxyglucose and bisphosphonate shows common pathways in its drug repurposed anticancer and anti-infection actions

We earlier showed with Systems Biology approach that the genotoxic stress response evoked by cancer, infection, and radiation injury have similarities, particularly at the gastrointestinal tract. This was made possible using biophotonics, and show promise in drug screening opportunities using each of these pathologies as a surrogate model for one another. Using similar molecular Imaging methodology, we showed for the first time binding of osteoporosis drug bisphosphonate to prostate and ovarian cancer tumors and potential drug repurposing candidature. Recently, we presented similar drug re-tasking potential of 2-Deoxyglucose (2-DG) in anti-infection. Here, our data demonstrating mitigation of citrobacter rodentium infection by dietary treatment by 2-DG (0.4%), were analyzed with the bisphosphonate anti-infection response to enteric bacterial pathogens data reported elsewhere. Based on these results, a systems approach analysis is developed and presented demonstrating cross-talk and communication between different cells and integrated responses to pathogens and disease by 2-DG and bisphosphonate in anticancer and anti-infection actions. A role in EGFR signaling and modulation in the infiltration immune response cells by these two dissimilar compounds play a profound bridging event in anticancer and anti-infection activities. These system biology strategies will provide opportunities for drug repurposing in personalized cancer therapy and in anti-microbial management during cancer treatment. Also pave way for safer drugs in prevention and therapy of HER family-driven cancers.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Benefits of Lumbar Facet Joint Block For Persistent Backache After Lumbar Discectomy An Analysis of 58 Patients
Get PDFObject: The author evaluated the effectiveness of using facet joint block with local anesthetic agents and steroid medication for the treatment of persistent low-back pain in a medium-sized series of patients who underwent lower lumbar disc surgery.
Methods: Over a period of 2 years, the author performed 130 facet joint injections in 58 patients with persistent low-back pain after lumbar discectomies at L3/4, L4/5 and L5/S1 levels in Combined Military Hospital Rawal-pindi. All of the 21 women and 37 men (mean age 44 years, range 23 to 68) entered into the trial had low back pain for over one month localised to one side with tenderness and local muscle spasm over the facet joints. All had a negative straight-leg-raising test but 17 had slight pain radiating into the posterior thigh on the same side where surgery was performed. The main parameter for the success or failure of this treatment was the relief of the pain. For the first injection mainly a diagnostic procedure the author used a local anesthetic (1 ml bupivacaine 1%). In cases of good response, Depomedral 80 mg was injected in a second session to achieve a longer-lasting effect. Long-lasting relief of the low-back pain was reported by 43 patients (74%) during a mean follow-up period of 10 months. Nine patients (15.2%) noticed a general improvement in their pain. Six patients (10%), however, experienced no improvement of pain at all. There were no cases of infection or hematoma.
Conclusions: Lumbar facet joint block is a minimally invasive procedure to treat facet joint pain in post discec-tomy period. The procedure also seems to be useful for distinguishing between facet joint pain from postoperative pain due to inappropriate neural decompression after lumbar surgery

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Lumbar Discectomy Using Lagenbech Retractor, A Cost Effective Minimally Invasive Technique. Study of 520 Cases
Get PDFObjective: Conventional disc surgeries though have good results, may result in subsequent damage due to trauma to erector spinae, ligaments and bones.
Materials & Methods: A total of 520 patients who underwent lumbar discectomy were studied. 388 were male and 132 were female. The mean age in this study was 35 years. Only patients with symptomatic posterolateral disc prolapse were included in the study. All patients were investigated with MRI or CT scan of lumbar spine. Only ten patients were investigated with myelography. The followup period was up to two years. Oswestry Disability Index of low backpain disability was also used as specific parameter in some of the cases.
Results: Overall success rate for pain relief was 93.8%. Only 13% had occasional pain on exertion. The hospital stay was < 2 days. The most common complication was recurrent sciatica (5.7%), and these patients reported within six to eight months postoperatively. Other complications encountered were operation on wrong level (1.34%) discitis (0.76%), dural tear (0.19%), nerve root injury (0.19%) and failed back syndrome (2.30%).
Conclusion: Author concludes that lumbar discectomy performed through a small (< 2.0 cm) incision using manual retraction with Lagenbech retractor, headlight and magnifying loupes is a safe and cost effective procedure with distinct advantages such as reduced hospital stay, minimal post-operative pain, early mobilization and good alternative to conventional laminectomy/discectomy procedures.
