Evaluation of Easy-to-Use Energy Building Design Tools for Solar Access Analysis in Urban Contexts: Comparison of Friendly Simulation Design Tools for Architectural Practice in the Early Design Stage
Current building sector is focused on reduction of energy requirements, on renewable energy generation and on regeneration of existing urban areas. These targets need to be solved with a systemic approach, considering several aspects simultaneously such as climate conditions, lighting conditions, solar radiation, PV potential, etc. The solar access analysis is an already known method to analyze the solar potentials, but in current years, simulation tools have provided more effective opportunities to perform this type of analysis, in particular in the early design stage. Nowadays, the study of the solar access is related to the easiness of the use of simulation tools, in rapid and easy way, during the design process. This study presents a comparison of three simulation tools, from the point of view of the user, with the aim to highlight differences in the easy-to- use of these tools. Using a real urban context as case study, three tools; Ecotect, Townscope and Heliodon, are tested, performing models and simulations and examining the capabilities and output results of solar access analysis. The evaluation of the ease-to-use of these tools is based on some detected parameters and features, such as the types of simulation, requirements of input data, types of results, etc. As a result, a framework is provided in which features and capabilities of each tool are shown. This framework shows the differences among these tools about functions, features and capabilities. The aim of this study is to support users and to improve the integration of simulation tools for solar access with the design process

Using building energy models in the evaluation of retrofit strategies for industrial buildings in Italy
This paper presents an experimental study to develop energy saving potential strategies in prefabricated industrial buildings using energy models to compare and to evaluate different energy retrofit solutions.
Latest European policy and programs focus on researches about retrofit and refurbishment of existing building, in particular about industrial building which is considered a strategic sector not only for improve energy efficiency and sustainability but also for improve economy, jobs and competitiveness, into a general view overcoming national approaches and
looking for synergic and integrated strategies and programs. Much of the industrial sector in Italy is obsolete, with high energy consumption, and nowadays there are, in Italy, only few studies on this topic which are not able to support assessments about average actual or potential energy performances of industrial buildings. In this sense, providing operative actions or strategies to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy uses in Italian industry is fundamental. This study, starting from a previous research focused on statistical data about energy efficiency of industrial buildings, aimed to establish general background and
effective criteria for refurbishment actions, with specific real cases
In this study a modular housing system is presented. The module house is specifically designed to support smart technologies, zero energy costs and high environmental comfort levels for the independent living and the well being of older adults. Accord-ing to the principles of active ambient living, which aims to enhance and improve living conditions for older people (Spadolini, 2013; AA.VV., 2012), an experimental module house is proposed. The module house is a dry wooden modular construc-tive system, able to provide: adaptable indoor spaces, high energy performances, full energy autonomy and a easily manageable framework for smart devices, smart furniture and sensors.
The achievement of a real and effective ambient assisted living, using advanced technological solutions to make active, safe and inclusive indoor environments, need relevant architectures and building components which can be integrated and can contain inside any possible system. The module house represents an experimental building design research, in which energy, environmental, technological and func-tional requirements for assisted living of older adults are taken into account.
The design of this experimental module house is developed with a detailed level, with plan, fronts and sections, construction details, energy simulations, environmental analysis, plant designs, adaptability and flexibility layouts, installation layouts of smart objects, devices and ITC technologies (Sanchez, 2017; Mazziotta, 2016), also considering the possibility to reduce time and costs of construction and manage-ment. Thanks to the modular approach and the fast assembly process, the module house can be moved, modified or replicated to obtain little residential districts, con-stantly updatable. Results of the analysis, simulations and functional controls show the effectiveness of the modular housing system as experimental module house for older people
Comparative energy models for industrial builidngs thermal performances
An experimental study is presented concerning development of energy saving potential in prefabricated industrial buildings, through comparative energy simulation models. According latest European policy and programs focus the research field is into retrofit and refurbishment of existing building. The building stock in industrial sector in Italy is rather obsolete, with low comfort conditions and high energy consumption. In Italy, only few studies deal with this topic to support assessments about average actual or potential energy saving quality of industrial buildings. This study, based on selected case-studies, aimed to establish general background and effective criteria for refurbishment actions. One “key factor” for energy saving in prefabricated industrial building is the thermal performance of the envelope (walls, roofs and windows), where reduction of energy consumption, for full air conditioning, is directly related to envelope thermal performance. Energy building design tools have been used, such as Ecotect Analysis, Heat 2.0 and Wufi Pro, to investigate how different envelope assemblages affect the energy consumptions in industrial buildings with different size starting on common scenarios. Proceeding from statistic data of existing common buildings in Italy, and most diffused building elements, like concrete prefabricated wall panels etc, some general case studies are defined and used to run energy simulations. The results give back a range of average energy analysis to compare and evaluate mean efficiency factor of real buildings and show potential energy benefits obtainable with various single or multiple refurbishment options. Therefore, having control over the dominant factors in the building envelope is indeed an important step in the path to achieving energy savings and carbon reduction in industrial buildings
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
