Teacher Practices Observation Enriched by Collective Discussion: Teacher Noticing as I-Position

    No full text
Teacher noticing has become a prominent construct in teacher education and professional development research. Teachers' professional development devices are based on their ability to observe, share, and reflect on their teaching practices. In this article, we adopt a socio-cultural perspective to investigate teachers' act of noticing classroom practices, particularly those oriented toward inclusion. Considering this approach, we developed a reflection on teachers' positions as observers of inclusive practices and how this position could impact students' learning. To support this reflection, we collected audio recordings of 25 teacher students attending a teacher education course and their final reflexive written products. From the qualitative data analysis, we identify three different level of positions: I-as-observer of the students, I-as-observer of my own practices with the students, and a meta-position-as-observer of the entire educational context, including their own actions. The implication of the results of this study will contribute to improving and guiding teachers' observation and their noticing ability related to inclusive practices

A method for the Analysis of Inter-action in an Online Learning Community

In this paper we propose an innovative method, called Inter-Actions Network Analysis, to analyze discussions occurring via web-forums. The method has been tested on a blended university course about “Educational Psychology and E-Learning”. The theoretical combines Activity Theory and Speech Analysis Theory. The method is composed by three steps through which a mix of qualitative, content analysis, and quantitative analysis is performed. The first step provides a segmentation of notes in speech actions and the identifi cation of the categories and sub-categories designed according to the Activity Theory, so to fi nalize a grid. In the second step the grid is applied and elicited and eliciting communicative actions are organized into a matrix. Finally, the third step investigates the network of the communicative actions through the Social Network Analysis. The method has been tested on a corpus of data consists of 72 notes posted by ten university students. This type of analysis allows deep understanding of the dynamic and the structure of the discussion and allows teachers and tutors to monitor and direct the discussion toward the predefi ned goals

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

STABILITY ANALYSIS OF ONLINE SIGNATURES IN THE GENERATION DOMAIN

    No full text
This paper presents a new approach for the analysis of local stability in online signature. Conversely to previous approaches in the literature, the analysis of stability is here performed by considering the characteristics of the processes underlying signature generation. For this purpose, the Sigma-Lognormal model developed in the context of the kinematic theory of rapid human movements is considered. It allows the representation of the information of the neuromuscular system involved in the production of complex movements like signatures. The experimental results were obtained using the SuSig database. They demonstrate that the new approach provides useful information on stability of online signatures and allows to better understand some characteristics of human behavior in signing

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
