IIASA Conference '76

    No full text
The IIASA Conference '76 was the first General Conference of the International Institute For Applied Systems Analysis. It provided a major forum for review of the creation, development, research, and future role of IIASA. Thus, these proceedings provide a comprehensive report on the first three years of the Institute. The proceedings appear in two volumes. Volume 1 contains presentations, comments. and discussions on the concept of IIASA, its creation and research strategy, its studies of global issues (including energy, food, and global development), its work on regional issues, the relationship between analysis and policy-making, and the role of policy analysis in an international setting. The invited comments of the National Member Organizations on the development of the Institute and on the Conference also appear in Volume 1. A list of participants and the table of contents for Volume 2 are appended. Volume 2 contains presentations. comments, and discussions of the research areas: Resources and Environment, Human Settlements and Services. Management and Technology, and System and Decision Sciences. The table of contents of Volume 1 is appended. Each volume contains brief biographies of the authors of presentations in that volume. Recognition is due to the Council of the Institute and the Austrian Government for their significant contribution to the development of the Institute; to the participants of the Conference for their support and guidance; and to the IIASA staff for the spirit and effort devoted to the Conference and the preparation of the proceedings

"IIASA Conference '80," which took place 19-22 May l980, was the second such meeting in the life of the Institute, the first having taken place in l976. Since this meeting occurred during the Institute's eighth year, it celebrated the growing maturity of the research program by centering its attention on the theme "Applied Systems Analysis: From Problem through Research to Use." The Conference included presentations of IIASA's work both in summary and detail; descriptions of IIASA's linkages to other international and national institutions; discussions of uses of IIASA work; and various informal interactions between attendees and members of the IIASA staff. Major technical papers presented include: -- Roger E. Levien, "Applied Systems Analysis: From Problem through Research to Use;" -- Wolf Haefele, "Putting the Results of the IIASA Energy Systems Program to Work;" -- Ferenc Rabar, "Food and Agriculture Systems: Global and National Issues;" -- Andrei Rogers, "Migration, Urbanization, and Development;" -- Murat Albegov, "Regional Development: From Cases to Generalization;" -- Janusz Kindler, "Toward Integrated Policies for Water-Resources Management;" -- Rolfe Tomlinson, "Systems Approaches to Industrial Problems;" -- Andrzej Wierzbicki, "The Challenge of Applied Problems;" and -- Hugh J. Miser, "The Evolving Craft of Systems Analysis.

Science and Sustainability: Selected Papers on IIASA's 20th Anniversary

IIASA celebrated its twentieth anniversary in May 1992 with its fourth general conference: "IIASA '92: An International Conference on the Challenges to Systems Analysis in the Nineties and Beyond." The conference focused on the relations between environment and development and on studies that integrate the methods and findings of several disciplines. The papers selected for inclusion in this volume deal with environmental issues and the role of science in addressing such problems, as well as to some extent creating them

Worlds Within Reach: From Science to Policy - IIASA 40th Anniversary Conference

In October 2012, IIASA brought together over 800 leading scientists and experts from a diverse range of disciplines, regions, and institutions to explore the power of science to find future "worlds within reach” and to chart a path “from science to policy.” The conference showed how systems analysis can diagnose complex problems and deliver smart solutions with multiple benefits for both the planet and its people

Afghanistan's Agro-ecological zoning atlas. Part 2: Agro-ecological assessments. First revision

Agriculture is crucial for the national economy of Afghanistan and in particularly so for the agriculturally dependent population which is constituting 60 percent of the total population. Adoption of new strategies for agriculture monitoring, rural land use planning and land management are urgently required to reduce hunger and poverty among rural population and to assure sustainable food and feed production for future generations. The availability of reliable information on natural resources and agriculture for its monitoring and analysis is indispensable to development and implementation of such strategies. However, productivity in the agricultural sector has been relatively low. Afghanistan has the potential to increase its output of cereals, fruits and vegetables. For this purpose, the project “Strengthening Afghanistan Institutions’ Capacity for the Assessment of Agriculture Production and Scenario Development” (GCP/AFG/087/EC), funded by the European Union, is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Among the project objectives are improving the understanding of the country’s national resources endowment and limitations as well as assessing agricultural production capacities under current climatic conditions and likely impacts of climate change. Within the context of this project the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) support and implement a National Agro-Ecological Zoning activity in Afghanistan (NAEZ) which assesses quality and availability of land resources and identifies crop cultivation potentials - suitable area, production and attainable yield - under prevailing soil and terrain conditions and for given current or future agroclimatic conditions. One of the outputs of the NAEZ activities is this Agro-Ecological Zones Atlas which is based on applications of the FAO/IIASA National Agro-Ecological Zoning system for current and future climates

Within the context of this project, FAO and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) are developing a National Agro-Ecological Zoning activity (NAEZ) in Afghanistan. This Atlas is the first of two books and provides the collected information and maps of the country based on the agro-climatic Indicators

To support the assessment, the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) facilitated a coordinated and systematic community effort by inviting modelling teams to submit their available 1.5°C and related scenarios to a curated database. The compilation and assessment of the scenario ensemble was conducted by authors of the IPCC SR15, and the resource is hosted by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) as part of a cooperation agreement with Working Group III of the IPCC. The scenario ensemble contains more than 400 emissions pathways with underlying socio-economic development, energy system transformations and land use change until the end of the century, submitted by over a dozen research teams from around the world. The criteria for submission included that the scenario is presented in a peer-reviewed journal accepted for publication no later than May 15, 2018, or published in a report determined by the IPCC to be eligible grey literature by the same date.

This release extends the original scenario ensemble with additional timeseries data on prices related to agiculture and food supply, which was used in the IPCC's Special Report on Climate Change and Land (SRCCL).

The data is available for download at the IAMC 1.5°C Scenario Explorer hosted by IIASA.
