No full text: Lelio Orci, chairman of the Department of Morphology at the University of Geneva Medical School in Switzerland, was one of the most eminent morphologists of the last century, author of fundamental contributions to the study of microanatomy, especially regarding the ultrastructure of the endocrine pancreas and of the molecular mechanisms of cell secretion. In his work, Orci transformed EM-ultrastructure into a creative art form. The aim of this article is to demonstrate, through a few examples of the scientific work of this extraordinary scientist the reality of this assertion

Detrimental effects of octreotide on intestinal microcirculation
No full textBackground. Octreotide (OCT) is used for the protection of pancreato-intestinal anastomoses and for treatment of acute pancreatitis. Its effect on jejunal microcirculation after ischemia-reperfusion has not been investigated. Material and methods. Intestinal ischemia was induced in Wistar rats (n = 8) by occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery for 40 min. Prior to reperfusion infusion of OCT (7.5 mu g/h) was started (n = 8). Microvascular perfusion of the jejunal mucosal and muscle layers was assessed and compared with that of groups without intervention (n = 16) by means of intravital microscopy, Results. Ischemia-reperfusion decreased mucosal functional capillary density from 838.4 +/- 12.6 to 418.9 +/- 9.6 cm(-1). Mucosal capillary red blood cell velocity was reduced from 0.53 +/- 0.01 to 0.35 +/- 0.01 mm/s (P < 0.05). Permanent leukocyte adherence was increased. OCT without ischemia-reperfusion decreased functional capillary density (735.4 +/- 13.5 cm(-1)) and red blood cell velocity (0.46 +/- 0.01 mm/s). After reperfusion OCT led to perfusion heterogeneity demonstrated by villous stasis (26 +/- 4%) and a decrease in the index of mucosal perfusion (0.38 +/- 0.02). Functional capillary density was further decreased compared with ischemic controls (234.0 +/- 11.8 cm(-1)). Capillary red blood cell velocity was lower (0.30 +/- 0.01 mm/s) than in ischemic controls. Conclusions. OCT impairs microvascular perfusion of the jejunum both under physiological conditions and after ischemia-repel fusion. (C) 2000 Academic Press
Author name disambiguation in digital libraries using social networks and genetic programming
No full textBibliotecas digitais tornaram-se uma importante fonte de informação para comunidades científicas. Entretanto, por coletar dados de diferentes fontes, surge o problema de informações ambíguas ou duplicadas de nomes de autores. Métodos tradicionais de desambiguação de nomes utilizam informação sintática de atributos. Todavia, recentemente o uso de redes de relacionamentos, que traz informação semântica, tem sido estudado em desambiguação de dados. Em desambiguação de nomes de autores, relações de co-autoria podem ser usadas para criar uma rede social, que pode ser utilizada para melhorar métodos de desambiguação de nomes de autores. Esta dissertação apresenta um estudo do impacto de adicionar análise de redes sociais a métodos de desambiguação de nomes de autores baseados em informação sintática de atributos. Nós apresentamos uma abordagem de aprendizagem de máquina baseada em Programação Genética e a utilizamos para avaliar o impacto de adicionar análise de redes sociais a desambiguação de nomes de autores. Através de experimentos usando subconjuntos de bibliotecas digitais reais, nós demonstramos que o uso de análise de redes sociais melhora de forma significativa a qualidade dos resultados. Adicionalmente, nós demonstramos que as funções de casamento criadas por nossa abordagem baseada em Programação Genética são capazes de competir com métodos do estado da arte.Digital libraries have become an important source of information for scientific communities. However, by gathering data from different sources, the problem of duplicate and ambiguous information about author names arises. Traditional methods of name disambiguation use syntactic attribute information. However, recently the use of relationship networks, which provides semantic information, has been studied in data disambiguation. In author name disambiguation, the co-authorship relations can be used to create a social network, which can be used to improve author name disambiguation methods. This dissertation presents a study of the impact of adding social network analysis to author name disambiguation methods based on syntactic attribute information. We present a machine learning approach based on Genetic Programming and use it to evaluate the impact of social network analysis in author name disambiguation. Through experiments using subsets of real digital libraries, we show that the use of social network analysis significantly improves the quality of results. Also, we demonstrate that match functions created by our Genetic Programming approach are able to compete with state-of-the-art methods
