Fifty shades of queer: Seksuell tvetydighet i kunsten til den amerikanske modernisten Charles Demuth

Figures and Things: Charles Demuth, 1908-1935
Between 1923 and 1929, Charles Demuth (1883 – 1935), an early-20th century American painter perhaps best remembered today for his Machine-Age precisionist landscapes, executed a series of ten non-mimetic portraits of artists and writers active in and around the American avant-garde. All ten portraits in the series transgress the traditional conventions of their genre, eschewing the body proper to depict their subjects instead by way of objects, words, and graphic inscription, and often by reference to—or “in the guise of,” so to speak—his or her signature work or style. Bracketed between ca. 1908, the year that marks the onset of Demuth’s mature production, and 1935, the year he succumbed to diabetes at the age of fifty-two, this study uses the “poster” portrait series as a lens to distill a set of conceptual engagements and formal problems across Demuth’s complex and varied practice. While most scholars have treated the artist’s delicate floral still lifes and intimately-scaled watercolor figure studies in isolation from the precisionist landscapes for which he is best remembered today, I argue that the portraits crystallize an underappreciated thread running across Demuth’s practice—his persistent interrogation of the determinants—and limits—of pictorial meaning, genre chiefly among them. While Figures and Things trains its primary focus on Demuth, it also casts a wider view. Using the poster portrait series as a fulcrum to open onto a wider rereading of Demuth’s oeuvre, I position Demuth in turn to pry open the mythos of unity and rupture central to the art-historical narrative of American Modernism more broadly—a narrative, and by extension a revision, which exceeds any one individual actor. Arguing neither for Demuth’s exceptionalism nor against his marginality, I treat his singularity as a lens that brings into focus a richer and more complex account of the formal questions and historical pressures that shaped picture making in the early decades of the last century

The mind of a persistent innovator
Jaan Valsiner (2010) once described developmental theorist James Mark Baldwin as “a persistent innovator,” a motto that can equally be applied to himself. In Jaan’s publications, lectures, and discussions with students and colleagues, he has always emphasized the need to push ideas forward beyond what has already been established. Building on an impressive depth and breadth of ideas, his writings are attempts to chart a new course for psychology, bringing novel theoretical and methodological approaches into the discipline. Unlike most academics, Jaan does not repeat his lectures (despite giving many) but pushes himself to add something new each time. He also often gives spontaneous and improvised lectures – a skill he learned as a young lecturer in Estonia (Valsiner, this volume). His pedagogical style has a carnivalesque quality that encourages breaking down formal hierarchies and playing with ideas (Murakami, this volume). At the same time, the young students he supervises experience someone who takes their ideas seriously as producers rather than simply consumers of knowledge (the first author owes his early formation to Jaan’s guidance according to this principle). He frequently highlights that innovations in science come from the young, which he actively promotes with his persistent question of what is new in the research under discussion and what can we do to take it forward
Markedness and the Development of Prosodic Structure
It has long been noted that children's early words are truncated in form, and that those forms show a certain degree of variability in shape. In this paper I show how the prosodic development of children's early words can be naturally accounted for in terms of prosodic constraints on output form. Critically, I assume that children's segmental representations of lexical items are full from the beginning, but that early emergence of unmarked prosodic structures (e.g. Core Syllables and Minimal Words), combined with the low initial ranking of PARSE conspire to yield early word structures that differ from adult target forms in a principled manner. I conclude by showing how a given constraint ranking can provide an account of variability in form at a given point in time, whereas a shift in constraint ranking is needed to account for development over time. In so doing, I demonstrate how the process of language acquisition can be thought of as an optimization problem, and how OT might be adapted to provide for a theory of both competence and performance. The definitive version of this paper was published in NELS 25: Proceedings of the North East Linguistics Society and is available at http://glsa.hypermart.netDemuth, K. Study of J-dimer formation at azaphthalocyanine attached to an oligodeoxynucleotide chain
Charles University, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis Student Alena Gondeková Supervisor PharmDr. Jiří Demuth, Ph.D. Title of Thesis Study of J-dimer formation at azaphthalocyanine attached to an oligodeoxynucleotide chain Phthalocyanines and azaphthalocyanines are planar, macrocyclic synthetic molecules with an extensive system of conjugated double bonds, which give the molecule its characteristic color. They have wide applications in industry as dyes, catalysts, and in compact discs (CDs). Phthalocyanines and azaphthalocyanines are also utilized in medical fields, where they can serve as fluorescent sensors, fluorescence quenchers, or be used as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy aimed at tumors or the eradication of resistant bacteria. Azaphthalocyanines are capable of forming supramolecular structures known as J-dimers, which possess unique photophysical properties. The aim of this thesis was to study J-dimers of azaphthalocyanines after their attachment to a oligodeoxynucleotide strand. Therefore, it was first necessary to synthesize an unsymmetrical azaphthalocyanine and subsequently attach it to a oligodeoxynucleotide strand using solid-phase "click" chemistry. After the synthetic part, we focused on...Univerzita Karlova, Farmaceutická fakulta v Hradci Králové Katedra Katedra farmaceutické chemie a farmaceutické analýzy Student Alena Gondeková Školitel PharmDr. Zkoumali...Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical AnalysisKatedra farmaceutické chemie a farmaceutické analýzyFarmaceutická fakulta v Hradci KrálovéFaculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králov
